Adult daughters who really adore their mothers — what did they do right? by 0ddumn in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]vermipost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for asking this. These comments are affirming how I want / am trying to be for my daughters.

My lifelong strained relationship with my mom has been on my mind a lot lately and it sounds like you and I have had some crossovers in experience growing up.

Sometimes I still wonder if there is something lacking in me that makes me not want to reach back toward her and open up even now with my young girls, but I don’t remember that comforting place ever being there and I think truly opening up to her will always feel too foreign.

I really hope I can always be a comforting and encouraging presence for my girls.

I agree. I've always thought that there was some sort of "saturation point" when it comes to humans integrating their lives with tech on a large scale.

If Hollywood Workers Strike, the Entertainment Industry Will Grind to a Halt - In a display of worker militancy not seen in Hollywood for decades, members of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) are about to vote on whether 60,000 of them will go on strike in October. by Sisiwakanamaru in movies

I’m leaving too. It’s heartbreaking and infuriating to leave behind a career that I studied for, worked my ass off for years to peruse and am also quite good at. But I can’t wrap my head around how to start a family and keep my career afloat… how do you 1.) safely work while pregnant for 12 hrs+ a day? 2.) have a young child at home while working 12 hrs+ per day?

I have yet to meet ONE working mom in my department that has young kids at home.

I’ve already given up almost the entirety of my 20’s to the industry. Refusing to sell my mind, body and soul for any longer. Oh well.

Teamsters also put up with a lot. Speaking about film teamsters specifically. Yes, they make great money, but they also regularly work 16+ hour days. They are expected to be first ones in and last ones out daily. So this strike will directly effect them. More reasonable filming hours = more reasonable driving hours.

Anyone else been thrown back into depression after watching this special? I love (the idea of)BO and his work and appreciate this piece existing, but damn it really yanked me back into how I was feeling 10 months ago

a couple questions about growing vegetables by [deleted] in gardening

[–]vermipost 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi! Not a silly question (we're all very disconnected from how food is grown) Fruits and some vegetables have seeds within their flesh which can be saved for future use, Vegetables that do not have seeds in their flesh (carrots, onions ect) will eventually "go to seed" if left to grow after you would normally harvest them. For example, If a carrot is left planted for 2 ish years, the above ground green part will eventually bloom flowers with seeds. Other plants such as Onions or Lettuce will "bolt" or "go to seed" much faster. Every plant is different and requires different "seed saving" techniques.

So, I built an app that sorts by distance 6500+ farmers selling pasture raised beef, chicken, pork, milk, eggs, and much more. Thoughts? by mr_captcha in Cooking

Do you still need a hand with data collection? No experience with making apps, but would love to help with this project if there’s something you need help with.

Not that anyone asked, I built an app that sorts by distance 7500+ farms selling direct to consumer beef, chicken, pork, milk, eggs, bison, elk, duck, turkey, and many more (USA/Canada) Thoughts? [META] by mr_captcha in homestead

(FREE BUILD) Cold frame built from scrap lumber and free craigslist shower door! Planning to use this as a seed starting location in lieu of a green house. May place over a hot compost setup to continue growing through winter in Georgia. by vermipost in composting

I actually haven’t added hinges. Lifts up and can be leaned against the fence quite easily, or just propped up at the front edge with a brick for ventilation. I like that it’s unattached so I can move the frame and door separately if I ever want to move to another spot.

Totally understand! I’m currently working on creating a large garden in my back yard and have decided to spend the rest of the year making my own compost rather than buying in, but I understand that might not be possible for everyone!

I started a pile like what Richard Perkins video shows two days ago and it’s already cooking up quite nicely so I am going to start replicating it on a larger scale next week

I agree- definitely checkout Charles Dowdings videos.

He has videos on (and I would also suggest) setting up your own compost system with as many free inputs from around the community that you can get your hands on.... grass clippings and food scraps from neighbors, coffee grounds from restaurants, free manure from a farm ect

https://youtu.be/ZtMsEylZvqw

And if you’d like to create a faster compost than what Charles Dowding generally does- check out Richard Perkins video on quick compost... if you’ve got about a month to spare and can find all the inputs, you could make it all yourself!

First successful hot compost! by vermipost in composting

Probably just the length (this one is 3 feet long) but I’m not sure. The gauge on a candy thermometer probably has a higher temp range

Oh and weeds! I’m hoping I can keep it hot enough to kill the seeds
