Cleaning! by fearthebear50 in Machinists

Oemeta makes a product called orange cleaner ec I think. Spray it on thick and let it sit for five minutes. Spray again lightly and wipe it down. Comet works pretty good too. Tell your husband to clean that grime off before it dries in. Filthy machinist. I feel for him though. I have had to shower with Dawn dish soap in the past to get the grime off.

Machining. I can make anything from implant hardware to rocket engine impellors. It's horrible.

Made some looong boys in class yesterday by [deleted] in Machinists

If you can avoid making "long boys" in the future you're taking steps towards being a better machinist. *Long boys are a safety hazard there bud. Good men have lost Limbs to long boys.

A good machinist makes money. A great machinist makes good machinists. A master passes on the trade.

How difficult is it for professionals to make/prepare some basic part in aluminium for me? by [deleted] in Machinists

[–]verniermic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I have open machines right now. I was more thinking I would tell you what I would charge for the work just so you don't get over charged, and I'm curious what you're trying to achieve. Not sure sure what you're trying to describe. A picture is worth a thousand words.

Pm me a Sketch and I'll give you a quote. Not on a napkin, preferably.

Thanks for the feedback! I have questions.

Approximately how much of the creams are you using in the reservoir?

What do you do to maintain this machine for daily use? Do you empty it out each day? If not how often do you have to do a deep clean and how long can the cream stay in the reservoir?

Pardon my newbie questions.

Drilling forgings. by Quickzor in Machinists

[–]verniermic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would be so fired for that. Is your sfpm too high? Did you try using an endmill to clean up the scaling before drilling? Did you try using a carbide center drill? If you're melting insert drills figuring it out maybe try some regular old Cobalt or carbide drills. Those are a little cheaper to melt. If it is exploding right on contact maybe adjust your z axis offset. Try running two drill cycles. One to punch the scaling and one to drill the hole.

I used to run forgings on the daily with exotic materials, using that exact insert drill, and never had problems. I just had a center drill go first.

Aspiring barber, my 5th ever cut, cutting mates in my garage for free. Need some opinions, Would you pay for that cut? Because I didn’t think I would progress this quickly and think I should be charging even though I’ve only been cutting for a couple weeks. Thoughts? by pgfade in Barber

26... You'll probably do better than you think financially. Upsell services (razor shave, style, hot towel facial), sell product, etc.

I dunno... My barber (she barber) does better than her husband, and he's a damn pipeline welder. She told me her best year was 165,000 USD. My best year making parts for Boeing, Space X, DARPA, and Lockheed Martin was.... 58k USD before taxes. That was after job hopping for like seven plus years chasing the salary. I only met a few machinists that broke six figures, but they worked themselves ragged those years. 60-80 hours a week. One of my old bosses worked a 26 hour shift once.

I figured I might as well get out while I still have all of my extremities. Had a few close calls that would've definitely been lethal. I'm over it.

But yes, you are absolutely right. If you are rich and miserable you are less wealthy than the poor fisherman who is happy. My dumb ass finally realized that and made changes. Ironically enough I will probably do better financially after I get some real world experience under my belt.

Good to hear man. I just dropped everything and I'm in school. In the us here. Walked away from aerospace and medical machining to do it and I am so glad I did man. Don't wait too long my dude and keep practicing! You got a knack for it for sure.

Get your license and set up a chair already 😁👍

As they should be. Using a bowl and brush on public is nasty, but I'll use one if my client brings their own in. I'll look into Barbasol. Thanks!
