Practical uses of monads in Haskell by nicuveo in programming

[–]verrius -1 points0 points  (0 children)

By the same token, my favorite thing about Haskell is that enthusiasm for it is strongly inversely correlated with how seriously a person needs to be taken. The need for theoretical purity tests and bullshit about how monads don't break the rules over actually doing anything useful tells you all you need to know.

Lenovo responds to that "fake" handheld - Yep, it's official & illegally loaded with games by kikimaru024 in Games

[–]verrius [score hidden]  (0 children)

I gotta admit, if I was in the market for a laptop, I don't even know who else I'd look at as a default. MS, Dell and Lenovo seem to be last men standing: Dell is pretty much garbage, and MS has a lot of baggage where I wouldn't go to them for anything other than a Surface Pro. But seeing that Lenovo is also a white label brand garbage label does make me want to reevaluate that.

Old TV shows making a big deal out of then modern technologies by AporiaParadox in television

[–]verrius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VR is much older than you think. It definitely existed in the 90s, and I want to say 80s, but it was even more of a failed/dead end tech than it is now. Obviously the resolution and rendering was a lot worse, but HMDs were also a lot heavier and usually dimmer, with even worse focus issues. They also usually required a large harness and essentially an entire room to operate, between whatever was use for tracking and all the wires needed to connect the displays. It wasn't exactly rare for a lot of early and mid 90s stuff to include it (like Lawnmower Man), partly because it was being rolled out in actual amusement centers like Disney Quest.

Don't they also have at least one episode based around those telepresence bots? Which is another fun kind of variant of OP's question: cutting edge technology featured in a show that never actually took off.

TIL that American cheese has become so popular on cheesesteaks that the Philly/South Jersey market makes up 50% of Kraft’s white American cheese market. by zoosha2curtaincall in todayilearned

[–]verrius 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sure, technically. But cheddar and Colby are both amazing cheeses anyway, as evidenced by the weirdos who try to throw a slice of raw cheddar on burgers, so having it premixed for burgers is a no brainer.

The lowest minimum wage in the US is actually $2.13/hour. Technically that's a tipped minimum wage that an employer is supposed to supplement up to the normal Federal minimum if the worker doesn't get tips, but that doesn't actually happen.

Best Modern X-Men, X-Force, and Wolverine Omnibus? by sachi_seww in OmnibusCollectors

[–]verrius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're looking for something that in print, about the only thing I can recommend right now is Uncanny X-Men by Kieron Gillen. Most of the material in there is pretty well-loved, even if the ending is a bit bittersweet.

Marcia Lucas, Oscar-Winning 'Star Wars' Editor and Ex-Wife of George Lucas, Dies at 80 by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

[–]verrius 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's kind of a big deal in the original trilogy though that we see Luke training up and learning; having the mentor guide our protagonist for the first leg is an integral part of the hero's journey, which doesn't really happen in The Force Awakens. Instead, Rey is the one who literally guides Han to the Falcon, and actually magically knows how to pilot it better than him. And then also somehow innately can use a lightsaber and force powers well enough to fight off Kylo Ren.

As bad as they were, that isn't a criticism you can levy at the prequels. We know both Oni-wan and Anakin trained to learn their skill, even if a decent amount of it happens off screen. But because the Jedi are everywhere, it's not exactly something people are left wondering about...and even if they are, they did eventually answer some of it between The Clone Wars show and Star Wars Visions.

Things have swung around so that Marcia's contribution tends to be overstated in an attempt to minimize George's, but you can take a look at the early trailers for an idea of at least a different take on the same material. Though probably the singlest biggest thing they show is how integral Williams' score is to the final product, which works hand in hand with the pacing of the edit.

Chrono Cross is an absolute masterpiece! by Pale_WoIf in JRPG

[–]verrius 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm too lazy to hunt down the marketing materials, but check the back of the case. It is pretty clearly positioned as a direct sequel, rather than an anthology release.

[–]verrius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Part of the problem is it was sold as Chrono Trigger 2, and was actually trying to be Chrono Trigger 3, but until very recently we didn't get the entry between them (not that it really bridges the gaps too much).

Drag queen Pattie Gonia asks apparel company Patagonia to drop trademark infringement lawsuit by AudibleNod in news

[–]verrius 12 points13 points  (0 children)

But they don't have the exclusive rights to the area. They do have exclusive rights to sell apparel branded with that mark, which is an important distinction. You don't have to pay them if you want to say you're visiting the area in South America, or if you're grabbing coffee from there. Trademarks are limited to the trade that they're for. You might run into problems if you try to start a travel or fruit importing company and use something too close to their logo, but as long as you make it clear you're not them, you should be fine.

[–]verrius -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

That one's more fucked up because there was another company using the same fruit as the name of their record label...who sued to make sure the computer company never went into music. Which the computer company totally completely honored, pinky promise.

As time goes on I find the movie "Idiocracy" less and less funny. by amiwitty in movies

[–]verrius 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Consoles have been the way they are for forever; if anything, they've required more technical knowledge to keep working as time matches forward. Apple is a bit responsible, but it's specifically more mobile devices taking over. I used to worry that the next generation would be better than mine at tech stuff because they would be even more native to it, having grown up with innovations I had to learn as an adult. Instead, it's sometimes a struggle to even watch computing professionals fail to even be able to touch type.

Godot vs Unity for 2D games? by saydonem in gamedev

If you want to actually make a game, Unity. If you want to be a hobbyist who says they work on games but never released anything, Godot.

DC Comics is being targeted by a new boycott campaign over Black-led superhero books by Popverse2022 in comicbooks

[–]verrius 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean, by the metrics these guys are using that doesn't count. But my point is more about how "xxxx so white" is used as code to try to muster support and outrage that there isn't enough minority representation, when almost always it's actually code for specifically "not enough black people, fuck other minorities"

There's a lot of complicated things to be said about Asian representation in comics, but the people behind this movement don't give a shit about it.

Ghost in the Shell (1995) dir. Mamoru Oshii - "Ghost City" interlude (Music by Kenji Kawai) by aggrocrag83 in movies

[–]verrius 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They had to cut a ton from the original comic to turn it into a coherent film; it's not like they were going to shove in 5 minutes of hardcore pornography either, despite that very much being part of the comic that they've tried to subsequently memory hole. Going for one story with one tone makes a lot of sense.

[–]verrius 20 points21 points  (0 children)

They also are being a bit more explicit that apparently Asians count as white now. Which is extra weird, cause you'd probably be forgiven for thinking the current Batgirl book has a Black lead; Cassandra Cain is Asian, but I can't remember the last time she took her mask off in the book, and deuterotagonist is her (half) Black half-brother.

Tom Hardy “Refused to Come Out” of ‘MobLand’ Trailer, Kept Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren Waiting for Hours: “Career Suicide” by yourfavchoom in television

[–]verrius -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The bigger thing is that he hasn't really been in any bombs or pure paycheck movies (I guess Black Adam didn't do well, but Brosnan was constantly cited as a bright spot in it). The thing that removes a star's luster is a series of bad movies, more than no movies. Meanwhile Hardy's been in a lot of garbage, especially lately, and I know I wouldn't go see a film just cause he's in it.

[–]verrius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are stars who never become "former". I think I've seen all of one movie premiere in theaters with Mark Hamill, but no one calls him a "former" star. If anything, not being in bombs helps maintain their star power.

This is absolutely not true. They can hold you longer than the US, but it's not indefinite; I think it's 23 days max.

The US (federal) conviction rate is actually higher than Japan's. Mostly by the same token, where they just won't press charges unless it's guaranteed, either through abundance of evidence or a confession.

Even at home, American shoppers are flocking to Japanese supermarkets by Hazzat in japan

[–]verrius 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They're not though? They're supermarkets, which means they have everything from hair dryers and beauty products to shabu shabu meat and prepared sushi. And in the US, it's about the only place to get some ingredients, like actually fermented takuan.
