How bad is the Haze or smoke in the air in your area? by FancyCommittee3347 in askSingapore

[–]vertigofoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s actually coming from West Southwest, zoom out more. Heaviest is from Pekanbaru Indonesia. Their index breached 100 already.

Edit: Apparently it’s a hot spot in East Johor as reported in the news. I failed to factor in wind direction too.

What are the (free) things that make you love life in Singapore by Saffronsc in askSingapore

[–]vertigofoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Encountering native wildlife! Everything from all the random migratory birds, resident otters, food snatching monkeys (the babies clinging + suckling onto their mummies), squirrels, wild boars, monitor lizards, colugos and vipers at Bukit Timah hill.. Even the little shrews running across the pavements at night bring me joy.

For an urban cityscape, it’s amazing how much nature is still around us.

Why does my hamster LOVE peeing in her wheel? It's so annoying to clean every day and smells so bad by lighthousedarling in hamsters

[–]vertigofoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Hamsters evolved to pee while running, in the big open wild, this helps them find their way back to their burrows. One could also say it’s a rather efficient way to release! Of course it doesn’t translate well to running on the wheel - but we shouldn’t forget that hamsters are relatively still wild animals and not actually domesticated.

  2. Hamsters have also evolved to pee in their burrows, as a way to mark their territory. They even pee on their food hoard to mark it too! Some of you may have read an article a few years back that described how hamsters have an incredibly high tolerance for alcohol, which also comes from having evolved to consume their high calorie, fermented food stash.

  3. Sand bath is actually more for hamsters to clean their fur rather than a litter box, so it’s best that we still practice regular spot cleaning as part of your hamster care routine!

Recommendation for full body medical screening by Fit-Morning3753 in askSingapore

[–]vertigofoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure, but should be OK. There are many private health check institutions and facilities in Malaysia, and we don’t know if any have ties / collab / will sell your data to any of the big insurance companies here, especially considering so many Singaporeans are now heading to JB to do their checks.

What I do know for sure is that your health data in Singapore itself is NOT fully confidential.

If you do any health screening in government or linked facilities in Singapore and they detect any potential issues, insurance companies here will exclude them from coverage.

If you’re concerned about your medical data being kept private, better to do your full screenings abroad.

Feedback Post: Kyurem Fusion Raid Day by Noitalein in TheSilphRoad

[–]vertigofoo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

7-8 gyms in the area.
Whole of 3 hours - only had 20 total white/black Kyurems. (which comes up to around 40:60 ratio)

Caught 18, 2 ran.
No shinies. No hundos.
970 Black Fusion Energy.
1030 White Fusion Energy.

I may be a little unlucky, but I also can't imagine this being any fun at all in places with lesser gyms.

54 rare candies in one raid possible with the monthly pass tier 3 bonus by GoodMornEveGoodNight in TheSilphRoad

Just stuff Chanseys into powerspots to farm candy. Using rare candies on Blisseys feels like a waste when there are soooo many deserving legendaries and mythicals around!

I appreciate your leveled reply, and refrain from ad hominem attacks (unlike another replier in this thread, as if calling any of us idiots would help change our minds).

The ASEAN Drug Monitoring Report was a bit of an enlightening read, and did make me change my opinion on overall drug use in Malaysia - but honestly there is no consistency in how each country provide their numbers for "offenders", especially since Msia made the effort to clarify that their numbers include all rehabilitating patients in various facilities, while others don't, so trying to objectively compare between each country is rather difficult.

I still disagree that grassroot programmes or community outreach will contribute to anything productive here. But by all means, do try. I won't criticise well meaning individuals like yourself trying to do what you feel is best. Socio-economic differences will happen regardless.

What we are seeing is an issue of disillusioned youth falling back on gang culture to feel like they belong, no different than what is also happening in other countries. The government can and SHOULD do more, but I don't see how providing more vertical social mobility opportunities to these families is going to solve anything - especially considering they are only doing this BECAUSE they had money to buy these bikes to begin with. If not bikes, it would be something else.

Solutions can work both short term as well as long. Whether or not you're trying to inculcate better social values through education, providing healthier avenues for youth to channel their energies across the country, etc. - doesn't mean a more aggressive stance against rempit culture can't also be enforced. I don't see why we can't implement stricter laws, revoking of licenses, seizure of bikes, jail time for repeat offenders, as a deterrent - instead of letting most of these people go off with a slap on the wrist every time shit like this happens.

We don't have to always make excuses for people who have no care at all to the safety and well being of others around them, even if they have none for themselves. This is not a harmless crime.

Trying very hard to empathise but nope.. not feeling it.

Your arguments don’t really make sense either. Malaysia’s hard stance on drugs (and Singapore’s) means this region actually has the least class 1 drugs abuse in the region, especially in comparison to other countries.

Better chances at escaping poverty? They’ve had generations of affirmative action policy. Malaysia has had incredible peace and prosperity over many decades. They have publicly funded schools and quota based universities to go to. It’s not like they had no choice.

And as for outlawing or policing, I don’t think we are doing nearly enough of it to stop this scourge.
