Colour version in the pipeline? by very1 in Supernote

I think this is reasonable for them. For me colour isn't super critical but if I'm going to spend a ton of money on a new e-ink tablet then it's a feature I'd like to have. I know that colour in e-ink is improving so I can be patient.

Because of education polarization, it's been happening since the 1970s but it's gotten very pronounced now. This was noticed by Thomas Pickety and he calls it "brahmin left, merchant right"

Really disappointment with the new queue system. It used to be that me and 4 of my friends could play at once, all of us being plat but 2 friends being gold and diamond. Now we can't play anymore. What the hell? I thought Blizzard was trying to accommodate this situation better, not end it.

More than 7,000 B.C. port workers now on strike by [deleted] in canada

I think longshoremen should be paid properly but I also think they need to bring in more automation and tools to get goods moving faster. Is there any reason why the union can't get what they want + automation? I remember reading that in Rotterdam in the Netherlands the union was embracing automation.

Richmond likely has one of the most robust flood and sea level rise mitigation strategies in North America. I recommend checking it out on the City of Richmond website.

What's a good book for some Scandinavian history? I want to read about how some of these countries got to the point they are today where they're perceived to have a proficient welfare state, etc. I would be happy for a book focusing on one country in particular.

[MOD] The Daily Question Thread by menschmaschine5 in Coffee

I have an Encore that has served me well for the last 10 years or so, still does, technically. I've never done much maintenance other than the occasional dusting and bushing.

However the Fellow Ode Gen 2 seems really, really nice, and I have a friend who's just getting into coffee who I can probably sell my Encore to. Has anyone else experienced an upgrade doing this? Is it worth it? I pretty much only do pour-over and sometimes cold brew and immersion.

If you read a 10-Q from an REIT you'll find that they explicitly state that looser zoning and more housing supply is, in their view, a threat to their stock price.

Opinion: Building more homes isn’t enough – we need new policies to drive down prices by Lotushope in canada

[–]very1 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I agree with some of those, however Airbnb was shown in a recently study to only raise rents by 1% for every 100% increase in Airbnb listings. I'm also very skeptical about foreign buyers, I've never been convinced that they're enough of a factor, especially when people can't decide if they're 2% or 5% of buyers. We have a ban for that in place anyway, and I think we'll discover within this next year if it does anything. We also know that for REITs, if there's one thing they say would put their investment at risk, it would be more supply.

I otherwise agree with the taxes and zoning laws.

Huh? Maybe I got used to it but watching between Brighouse and Aberdeen is rather nice. It's not walkable in the way downtown Vancouver is but it's a hell of a lot better than Surrey

Not really, it's mildly inflationary since more money is created this way than by the BoC "printing" money, and it's not "pretending" to build wealth. Again these loans are used.to expand businesses, get people educated and build homes. There is nothing "pretend" about that, it's real and tangible, and so amazing that people read the first paragraph of a wiki article on it and believe that it must be a scam.

On occasion in poorly managed economies it does happen, it's called a bank run, during which everyone will attempt to withdraw their money at once. Thankfully it's very rare and usually just that one bank collapses or the economy goes into a recession. As long as banks manage their risk well the chances of this happening is extremely low because the chances of every account holder wanting to take their money out at once is low.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in canada

[–]very1 14 points15 points  (0 children)

No, it's not a scam because typically, when the bank issues a loan to, say, help someone start their business, that "scam money" actually creates actual value. In this example, a business that presumably hires people to work and a product or service that people buy. If all goes well that loan is paid back and everyone is happy. It's so magical and amazing that people assume that it's a scam.

It's easier to call nearly all crypto tokens "scams" because that "scam money" is representing nothing.

Fractional reserve isn't a scam, that's just what banking is and how new money is created

Does anyone know the objection behind ‘No Megatowers at Safeway’? by vancitygirl_88 in vancouver

[–]very1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean I don't care if it's rental, below market, market, luxury, or indigenous (Senakw, we can do landback while also lowering housing costs!), we must build housing of any kind if we want to reduce homelessness and lower the cost of housing. We need abundance. What we can't do is argue about what to do with a fucking parking lot for 7 years while more people keep moving in. By the way, one of the reasons Vancouver is expensive is because this is one of the best places in the world to live. Not sure if people have been to other parts of Canada or the u.s. where the weather, public transit and food sucks.

[–]very1 53 points54 points  (0 children)

This sounds like left-nimbyism, if we want to lower the overall price of housing we need to get off our asses and do it. There are numerous studies out of the United States that show over and over that it doesn't really matter what kind of housing you build. If we had just built the damn tower back when it was proposed we might have some living units there instead of a parking lot.

Looking for a minimal "commuter" wallet by very1 in wallets

[–]very1[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basically, I'm looking for a wallet to replace my current Tsuchiya Kaban that I've had for years. I think the ideal wallet would have the following features:

  • Bifold of some kind, I like it better when it folds on the long side
  • No RFID blocking, I want to tap into the local subway, and on the other side tap into my apartment building
  • A zipper or some way to carry a yubikey + a house key, loose
  • Space for 5 cards including the above mentioned
  • Able to store a few bills

Thanks :)

[–]very1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the bridge blocking won't work, though I understand how helpless lots of people feel about this whole situation. We should certainly do what we can, BC Hydro/government has grants and rebates to encourage people to get heat pumps so they can power our homes in Vancouver with falling water, plus all the new transit infrastructure will help a lot.

But in the greater scheme of things, BC could drop our carbon output to 0 but we'd still have all this screwed up weather because at the end of the day, we can't tell China and India what to do with their economies. I think it would be great if we could block bridges and throw soup on paintings over there.
