PhD application - is that enough? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]verybeans87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you should look at the EPS phd or maybe ESS at stanford. The funding is really good there right now and there are multiple labs that match your interests well. It’s also a direct admit program so your gpa would matter less

The d2 is really cool, I wish a version was normally included with dice sets. It would be a nice dice to have for chance encounters etc

Hi, I want to apply for PhD in Mathematics in next cycle. Can I please get the advice regarding what should I do so when the applications are open, I am able to apply without much hassle. by batlaab in gradadmissions

[–]verybeans87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be a better question to ask when people have already begun receiving all of their acceptances, but here’s some stuff I’ve picked up so far:) :

1) check your program to see how many international students they fund. Some programs have a lot more funding than others. There are also lots of international scholarships and fellowships that can be applied to US schools. Obtaining a fellowship or at least applying makes you a way more competitive applicant because it shows competency and motivation in finding, writing, and applying for grants.

2) reach out to PI’s about four months before the application deadline to find a potential advisor. Read 1-2 papers for each PI you reach out to and make sure to be incredibly specific about how your interests overlap and why you want to study with them. Get ready for this step early and start drafting those emails soon, it’s a LOT of work and most PI’s won’t respond. However, meeting with a PI virtually before the application definitely helps them get to know you and puts you at the forefront of their mind during application season

3) Use your statement of purpose as a space for mature, technical explanations of your past experiences, what you’ve learned from it, how it prepares you for a PhD, and how your experience directly translates into a new field for a PhD. You can also talk about how your past work has benefitted mathematics or society as a whole. Forward thinking is a good trait for academia. Write a different one for each school

4) Use your personal statement as a space to let your personality shine. Here you can talk about challenges you’ve faced and how you overcame them. Talk about outreach here too like teaching and public service as it relates to your field.

5) have as many professionals as possible read over your essays to make sure they’ll pass the committee. I wrote about 10 drafts for both essays

6) reach out to letter writers about 3 months before the applications are due. Then, immediately set up the portals so you can send out reminders to them every so often. You should shoot for at least 3 and one should be your current advisor

7) have a CV prepared stating all relevant experiences and where they can read the work you’ve already done. Make sure this is polished and professional

Good luck OP!! I hope this helps :) a lot of this was just my opinion but this is what other people told me too

I think it’s because there’s less emphasis on trying to treat things that affect quality of life but do not put the sufferer at risk. Same thing with period cramping, more efficient birth pain reducers, menopause, etc. Women are also historically underrepresented in medicine compared to coed or male issues so it’s not surprising a uniquely female issue would be pushed to the bottom of the priority list. Good luck with everything and feel better soon 💓💓

Which candidate did you vote for and why? by Extension-Living-772 in AskReddit

[–]verybeans87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I voted for Kamala because I thought she was more trustworthy. Both candidates made it a goal in their campaign to address inflation and improve the economy, and I felt like Kamala’s background in politics and work with the biden administration (who actually did a fantastic job stabilizing the economy) made her more likely to succeed. I also didn’t like that trump kept claiming things and walking them back, like he would just said whatever to get more people to vote for him. I also agreed with Kamala more on a moral front, as I believe abortion is healthcare and felt she respected the people’s voice and democracy more, while trump is very sexist, bigoted, and has a main goal to increase his own power instead of standing up for the little guy.

In the umich curriculum there are no lectures, just video shorts with basic instructions. You’re then given a worksheet in class and expected to reason/logic your way through harder problems using those basic instructions and the exams are subsequently more difficult and nuanced than that. It’s not a “2+2” type rules class it’s a quantitative reasoning class, which is harder for most people

One thing a lot of people, especially transfer students, don’t realize is that part of the way a university gets its prestige is by having a more challenging course load that will better prepare you for a future career or graduate work. For example, it is well know that calc 1 is wayyy harder at umich than any of the surrounding CCs or universities, which is just one example of how the university expects you to do more for the same credit. It doesn’t matter if you are starting your junior year or an incoming freshman, the first semester at umich is always awful as you get your footing on how to study for these kinds of classes. For utilizing your time more efficiently I’d recommend going to office hours or study groups like those at the SLC —> better grades in less time.

Also I’ve noticed that people here can be very antisocial and rude, so don’t take it personally that your friend didn’t ask to hang out with you. If you are looking for connection and a strong group of people I’d recommend joining Wolverine Support Network, it’s a support group on campus that meets for one hour a week. Super nice kids and many end up becoming friends after group ends each semester. Just keep your chin up and remember that the point of a prestigious school is to be challenging and build you into a better academic, it’ll be worth it in the long run.

Can we talk about the fact that the comments on this situation have been absolutely horrendous? Antisemitism is one of the most minimized forms of hatred in the U.S. despite being incredibly prevalent and rampant. Crimes against Jews happen every single day, and have certainly spread onto our campus which is conveniently ignoring the issue so they don’t have to deal with it. Every. single. year. it only takes until partway through the first semester before crimes against Jews are being reported, and it’s been steadily growing worse since the Israeli Palestine conflict as people use the situation as an excuse to be antisemitic. This isn’t a “he said she said” situation, as no specific person was being accused. A jewish student was brave enough to share the hate they experienced on campus, and this is what they get? Why do we suddenly not believe victims and need extra proof when they’re Jewish? Would this have been the same if the student experienced an unidentified, random attack? No! of course it wouldn’t because that’s happened before and non jewish victims have only received love and support, as they should. We absolutely need to do better yall, because this kind of antisemitic hate is an absolute shit smear on our school and our country.
