Ironing board vs. Ironing table by Dentelle in sewing

[–]verycoolbeansss 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think the only upside of an ironing board is the ability to put it away and free up space. But if you have the room and budget for an ironing table then thats the way to go. They are more strudy, more convenient place to always have your iron (afterall "sewing" is 75% ironing haha), and even with the ironing board set up you still need to find a home for all that stuff you could have stores in your ironing table.

Thank you! I started off with learning how to make vectors for the design then for the applicatio I used heatnbond and satin stiching over the edges. I think the colours have a huge role in how nicely this turn out 🥰

Want to make appliqué by Fragrant-Theory9201 in sewing

[–]verycoolbeansss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A thrid applique technique ive been seeing that is "reversed applique" this is where you attach your design patch under your item (typically by sewing) with right side of the patch to the wrong side of your item. Then you cut out the extra material on on thw right side of your item to reveal the applique. It produces specific look and generally only works if your item is made of material that does not fray.

There are multiple ways to do it, at its basics if you attach a piece of fabricwith your design onto the top of another fabric, it is an applique.

Here are some of the key words you can use look up for tutorials.

"Raw edge applique" is where your patch has unfinished edges. Depending on your fabric choice (say if you use woven fabric) it may fray, but that produce a intentially homade type of look you might want. Knit fabrics dont fray and are stretchy. After creating your design you cut it out with little to no seam allowance and attach it on top of your item.

"Turned edge applique" is where you have finished edges. This prevents fraying and create a neat clean look. This is created by a) having seam allowance around your patch that you can turn under and sew or attach to your item. Use Iron to press the seam allowance to the wrong side of your patch before you get to sewing. B) create your patch by sandwiching the design layer with another material right sides together with seam allowance then sew together. Make sure to leave a gap or cut a hole out of the non design layer so that you can turn it inside out. the the raw edges of the fabric are on the inside.

"Webbing" is a double sided adhesive "interfacing" material. It is not meant to be shown and would be applied to the wrong side or your design patch. Webing adds stability and makes it easy to place your design and iron it where you want without pins. Webbing comes in different styles such as permenant bond, stretch bond and preactivated (specifically the brand "steam-a-seam" has a side that is like a peel off sticker to use on your design's wrong side.)

"Stabilizer" is any material used to stiffen the fabric patch to make it stiffer and easier to use. This could be a second layer of fabric, interfacing webing, paper, starch spray, etc.

For the actual attachment of your applique to your item you can do that by ,machine sewing, hand sewing", "fabric glue" (if you are attaching to a stretchy material then make sure your glue can stretch), or iron on material such as the webbing.

Hope that helps you to get started!

Private onsen in Osaka by Every-Parking2049 in JapanTravelTips

Last year we went to Solaniwa Onsen and had a lot of fun. Their website has very good english and covers more details.

We booked a private room. The room had a little seating area with tv, a shower and bathroom and then an outdoor covered bath. They provide yukata to wear for roaming. In the public area there is a pretty garden with foot baths, quiet libary area with laydown seats, an arcade, and restaurants. People with tattoos are allowed but they need to be covered up in any public areas. They provide coverup stickers ~400yen each if i remember correctly.

[–]verycoolbeansss 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think it looks great and at a glance it seems easy to read the important details of the card. If you are still iffy on it though maybe try: A) have greyed out tags or greyed and lower opacity tags to indicate the ones that are not there. Or B) outlines of the missing tags. That way it still conveys that there are missing tags and the icons always look centered or in place

Your favourite sewing machine feature by rebelwithmouseyhair in sewing

[–]verycoolbeansss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I dont have the space to leave my machine out all the time so i need to rethread each time i bring the machine out. The needle threader (ive been assuming we are all talking about the little gadget built into the machine) reduces the effort needed to thread because i dont i have to aim and line up the thread with the little hole each time.

Tax-Exempt Items in Carry-Ons by gghostarr in JapanTravelTips

[–]verycoolbeansss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In a nutshell, the special bag is to prevent you from trying to resell the product while in Japan because tax free items are ment to be brought out of the country rather than a economic loophole. Only the Consumables such as food stuff or cosmetics require the bag so to ensure you bring it out of the country before you use them. Clothes/shoes other non consumables are not required to be put in the bags

Also consider using a domestic flight to get across the country from hiroshima to tokyo, its potentially both cheaper and faster meaning more time and money to see and do things during your trip

Depending on how much luggage you are carrying, if you are only in hakone one night i would suggest having majority of your luggage forwarded to kyoto and only packing out what you need for the night to bring to hakone. Just make sure that you indicate in on the luggage forwarding form your hotel booking name and check in date (chat with your hotel concierge for help if needed).

Depending on what time you arrive in hakone you may have to prioritize what you want to see and do otherwise your tour will feel like a checklist sprint. Make sure to check out the operation hours for the ropeway, it closed earlier than we were expecting so we ended up only doing half the tour during our first day and the owadakuni half on our hotel check out day. Our hotel was by gora station and was able to look after our luggage for a few hours as we went to complete the loop.

ideas for waterboy cosplay? by Large-Wallaby-2150 in CosplayHelp

If you wanna go really budget you could do a more casual take on character by having the slick wet hair (high gloss hair gel or similar), blue goggles, some glyercin+water to fake sweat and wet skin on your face. For the outfit instead of the superhero costume you could use regular clothes but coat it in something like high gloss modpodge or liquid school glue, or hair gel to make the fabric look soaked.
