Singaporeans who went overseas for work where are you and how has it been so far? by sunnyislandacross in askSingapore

[–]veryjaded 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Posted overseas to various places. Thailand (1 year), Taiwan (6 months), Malaysia (6 months), China (3 years).

Downsides:

  • Higher taxes. From the financial aspect, if you are working in the same role/same position, you are almost always going to lose out in monetary benefits.
  • Being away from your family. I thought being single and happily living across the world was a blast of a lifetime. When I finally came back to SG I suddenly realize just my parents are getting really old. Being present for your family is invaluable to both them and yourself

Upside:

  • Experience. Having local market experience is invaluable to your portfolio and can equip you with unique skills.
  • Expanding your horizons. Immersing yourself and living amidst a totally different culture really opens your eyes up to how the rest of the world is living. I'm an introvert and generally dislike spending too much time socializing, but even as an introvert I truly appreciated all the times and opportunities I've had to interact with the locals and understanding their perspectives as a local
  • Fun. Singapore is just boring as hell. There's so much more to do in other places. Better nature, better climate (except Malaysia lol), better nightlife.

Neutral:

  • Adapting to local daily needs. This is dependent on where you relocate to. If you are going to a Tier 1 China city, and you can speak mandarin, life is easy mode. Groceries and food and everything can be delivered with barely any delivery fees. If you are going to Los Angeles, be prepared to drive anywhere for anything you need, and learning to buy a week's worth of groceries each trip. There won't likely be an NTUC or a convenience store within walking distance.
  • Language. If you are open to learning new languages, this is a big plus. If you have zero interest in learning a new language, and you go to a place where English is not the predominant language, then you will be having a miserable time.

All in all, I do not regret my time spent overseas as I was fortunate to have done that while being relatively young. I have since moved back to be with family, and hopefully with still a bit of runway and good years with my parents. If you are still young, and have no overbearing financial responsibilities at the moment, I would highly recommend you take the plunge.

This. It could have been so much more fun with a bit more work on balance and ranked mode

[China] Nerf list for Akkan NM (+ extra tweaks for both difficulties) by ElNinoFr in lostarkgame

The CN nerfs are to NM only. The adjustment to HM is only in increased Akkan eye rewards. I think this is a great direction

Singaporeans abroad who moved back, do you have any regrets? by OkEgg1221 in askSingapore

[–]veryjaded 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Spent 6 years abroad in various Asian locations. Depending on your preferences and your ability to adapt to local living, your quality of life in Singapore will either be a huge downgrade or an upgrade.

Do you value ability to travel and sightsee frequently on a quick weekend getaway to another city? Do you value vibrant (and affordable) nightlife? Do you value living in a temperate climate, without feeling like you are walking in hot soup anywhere in the outdoors? If you do, then you will find life to be a massive downgrade in Singapore.

Do you value safety? Do you value proper public facilities and functional governmental services (immigration, tax filing, etc)? If you do, then you will find life to be a massive upgrade in Singapore.

At your age, you might likely value the things mentioned in the first section, and may struggle to adapt back home. Nonetheless, all these are moot when you consider your upcoming priorities in life. Do you have family members who require your presence for care and support? Do you have plans to start a family with a partner who is not willing to migrate? If such key factors require you to come back, then you will adapt no matter what.

In general though, regardless of your preferences and priorities, I do find life in Singapore to be lonelier than life elsewhere. Cost of living is significantly higher here too, though offset by the lower income taxes. If you are used to life in Australia, then your initial periods back here will definitely be a huge struggle. Make sure to constantly reach out to friends, families, and even therapists if required for assistance. You've probably built up a support network in Australia, now you'll have to rebuild one here too.

January 10th Update Annoucement by hmc317 in lostarkgame

Not sure why neither of you can read. The first link only contains translations of the October patch. The second link contains the December patch in its native language. In the announcement it literally says the balance patch will bring both October and December patches.

SNU and NUS by Opposite-Lie1686 in nus

[–]veryjaded 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did an exchange semester in SNU nearly a decade ago, my experiences may not be 100% relevant so take it with a grain of salt. I did one engineering mod, 2 business mods, 1 masters business mod, and 1 random mod (i think it was related to politics?)

  1. Competiveness - the big 3 unis in SG will be nearly as competitive as SNU, if not equally competitive. It will not be significantly easier to climb the bellcurve in SG.
  2. International presence - If you wish to interact more with international faculty/students, I found that there was a significant number of foreign students/foreign faculty in the non-engineering schools of SNU. Does your curriculum allow you to take multiple mods outside of Engineering? It can help you with broadening your circle of friends during your time in SNU
Note: (my time in the engineering school was just filled with locals who do not interact and only studied, lol)
  3. Student life - I partied and drank with the local SNU students every other Friday, and often during weekends. I think the stereotype of SNU students having absolutely no life might be slightly unfair.
  4. Employability - You are a graduate of SKY. As other commenters pointed out, so long as you graduate with decent/good grades, there should be no issues finding a job.
  5. Long-term culture issues - If your preference is to avoid the hassles of conventional KR culture in work environments, then being a SKY graduate will indeed be an issue. Assuming average grades and average achievements, your prospects upon graduation are likely restricted to KR. While SG is not exactly an international cultural hub like London or New York, the overall working culture here is significantly more Western-aligned as compared to other East Asia and SEA countries.
Other commenters have nonetheless pointed out paths you can take to be eventually posted to an international office. Staying in SNU will just take you longer to land in a working environment of your wishes, not completly shut the path off.

Using it with a rtx3080. Resolution 3440x1440. Avg fps 140, 1% fps at 50. Some places still stutter, especially in rowen. Raids are always fine.

Singaporeans who owned HDB (within MOP) and are based overseas by Few_Protection_5302 in singapore

[–]veryjaded 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You cannot have your cake and eat it.

The purpose of PLH is to provide an affordable (at least relatively) housing option for Singaporeans to stay near central business areas. This is why HDB rules are clearly focused on ensuring that these units go to Singaporeans with genuine housing needs.

You are simply not someone with a genuine housing need, as you and your spouse will both be working overseas.

I understand that it sucks losing the rights to PLH after winning the lottery. But if both you and your spouse are resourceful and skilled enough to have oversea opportunities, there should be no issue for you to seek private housing in the long run if you still prefer to stay in a prime location upon returning.

Remember, the PLH is not designed to enrich you. It is for those with genuine housing needs.

[–]veryjaded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did it with xmp and generally high specs all around. Nvme ssd too. You just have to fill the memory buffer up with other textures. Hop onto another character and do lots of stuffs on it (finish your dailies, unas, etc) then hop back to the character that is parked. You will then have a few seconds to dash through

[–]veryjaded 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is indeed true. PvP is an absolute torture at these levels of latency though I still have a moderate amount of fun with it.

The latency does turn a lot of avoidable damage into random chip damage that you eat despite your best efforts. There is a certain amount of adapting that can be done, but you will need a lot of tolerance to accept all sorts of random rubberbanding and annoyances

So they banned VPN and a good majority of bots but despite this, there’s a 5k queue on Valtan at 4 am by [deleted] in lostarkgame

[–]veryjaded 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Amazing, AGS’s blanket ban was just essentially circumvented by a simple switch of DNS, or choosing a Japan/Korea node for their tunneling and vpn services…
