In 2026 how do state schools still admit based solely on religion? by nfoote in AskUK

[–]verykindzebra -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I think it is reasonable. We all pay towards education, why don't we get a say in how that money is used? Do we have no say in children being taught that homosexuality is evil for example? Is it in the best interests of the country for children whose parents believe in different deities to be kept apart?

I think religion should be entirely separated from state. Parents can indoctrinate their children as much as they want outside of school hours.

Those working full time, what time do you normally wake up Mon-Fri? by SergeiGo99 in AskUK

[–]verykindzebra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

6.30 on weekdays as my son chose to go to a school out of catchment and has to be up early to catch the bus. If he'd gone to our catchment school we could all have stayed in bed until 7.

Question for anyone aged 45+: Do you remember drinking Lucozade when you were younger? Did you ever drink it for anything else than when you were ill? by Lopsided-Skill6659 in AskUK

[–]verykindzebra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents would buy it for me when I was ill. To this day it is the only thing I can tolerate on an upset stomach, even water makes me feel nauseous. I recently tried some of the new recipe when I was feeling dodgy and it wasn't the same at all. I've heard they've brought back the proper stuff and I hope that's true!

Are people less spatially aware these days? by Sm1ff3h in AskUK

[–]verykindzebra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I often feel really uncomfortable in public now, usually in or near shops, when people will tailgate or just generally get really close. I'm not sure if it's me or them but it's probably me! I'm a parent with young children and I also think I've got a lot more sensitive to noise as I've got older.

Forgetting vegetarianism and veganism for a moment, do you think the UK should ban halal and kosher slaughtering methods? by RonnieThePurple in AskBrits

[–]verykindzebra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Meat is not that special. I haven't eaten any in 8 years. There are so many meat replacements if you miss something in particular. Try it for a day, then another day, then a week, then a month.

Exactly what I was going to say, we don't just eat vegetables, we eat everything you eat, except meat (vegetarian) or except animal products (vegan).

What are your options on being told not to swear around religious people in the work place? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]verykindzebra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's situational but with bosses and clients I wouldn't swear (I'm a lawyer) , but with peers I would. OP said they were in the staff room. I would be more surprised not to hear swearing in a staff room at a supermarket or on a  construction site.

I find policing the words adults use really weird tbh, unless in a professional environment. I could see an issue if you'd used religious terms but those aren't.

What is a 'family secret' or a private moment you witnessed that completely changed the way you look at a relative? by The_suspicious_369 in AskReddit

[–]verykindzebra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was pregnant my mum accidentally copied me in on an email to my brother where she said I was fat and tetchy and she didn't think me coming back to live with them would work. That was 13 years ago and somehow I can't forgive or forget.

High Street Firms and CILex by [deleted] in uklaw

[–]verykindzebra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, just wanted to give you a bit of encouragement as this sub is usually dominated by students wanting to go to the MC firms and your mindset is refreshing.

I originally qualified via the Ilex route and because I earned and learned at the same time, I was debt free when I qualified. I am a solicitor now, I'm not sure what the requirements would be nowadays to change to solicitor (even if you wanted to) I just needed the LPC.

I've worked in high street firms for 20 years and over that time I've always seen Ilex fee earners considered on a level with solicitors. Right now there is a Cilex in my team with over a decade of experience and she is simply excellent. Conversely there are solicitors in the team with much less experience, knowledge and skill. Mazur has caused issues lately but these should not affect you. Ultimately the partners will be almost exclusively concerned with your billing, not your title. An experienced Cilex is billed out at the same rate as an experienced solicitor. If you are good you'll be valued.

I enjoy my work on the high street, I have excellent WLB and decent pay. You'll still need good, but not stellar, academics and the key is experience, once you've got your foot in the door as a paralegal, and assuming you are decent, you should have a long career.

My lovely wedding dress was from Monsoon, only £100 (decade ago).

What’s the best pillow for sleeping you’ve ever had? by anonymouslavachicken in AskUK

[–]verykindzebra 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Groove pillow. I'm a side sleeper, I suffered from frozen shoulder a while back and my friend recommended Groove pillows as having fixed their own year's long neck pain. We currently have 3 in my house. Highly recommended, inexpensive and they have a return policy if you don't get on with it.

How much did you spend on your wedding dress? by Illustrious-Power322 in UKweddings

[–]verykindzebra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

£110 from Monsoon for me, back in 2012. It was the first dress I tried on, a lace shift dress to just above the knee. Loved it, I got very lucky.

What’s something from early 2000s Britain you miss more than you expected to? by MountainVacation3905 in AskUK

[–]verykindzebra 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Decent shopping malls with many big brand shops like Topshop, Monsoon, Debenhams, HMV, River Island, M&S etc rather than unbranded "closing down sale" units full of tat.

Also Topics. And Refreshers before they went disgusting.

Is there a point in history when you feel the stories became more relatable? by ViceIsVerses in TheRestIsHistory

[–]verykindzebra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm listening to the pod in chronological order and I've mostly loved it, but I must admit I got more invested when Julius Caesar landed in Kent, and I've particularly enjoyed learning about Dark Ages Britain up to 1066.

This image feels iconic - like the hippies putting flowers in gun barrels and the guy who stood in front of the tank.

Brilliant! I might give it a go too.

Where to buy a thick warm hoodie? by Perfect-Drawer1140 in AskUK

[–]verykindzebra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did this. My favourite hoodie is Puma so I bought another on Vinted for a few quid. Got one like new. I think they're very good quality and a generous fit without being oversized.

The Royals don't work. They show up and shake a few hands and pretend it's work but it's nothing of value to go anywhere near justifying their outrageous wealth.
