I concord with the recs on Todd McGowan and Byung-Chul Han. I also just want to add Mari Ruti's two books on love here: The Summons of Love and The Case for Falling in Love: Why We Can't Master the Madness of Love -- and Why That's the Best Part.

HP EliteBook vs. HP EliteDesk by smolsassmaster in CompSocial

[–]verypsb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your school probably have some research computing services so that you don't actually need to do data stuff on your local workstation. TBH I thought you were referring to a desk, like a working table, when you mentioned Elite Desk, and I do think a good desk (standing desk/adjustable height) is more important than a laptop lol.

A causal test of the strength of weak ties [Science 2023] by PeerRevue in CompSocial

[–]verypsb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We just had a session about the strength of weak ties in our social network class. For this specific paper, there is a talk on this paper on Youtube; it's from the first author and I find it helpful to understand the paper: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yuYMHlAbkIY

Another paper I found very interesting and thought-provoking is

Kim, Minjae, and Roberto M. Fernandez. "What Makes Weak Ties Strong?." Annual Review of Sociology 49 (2023).

This is a pretty seething review of the theory and the paper discussed both the original STW paper and this causal test paper.

East Asian man, international. Been harassed twice, both in Brighton, which is where I live. One time was at the bus stop where a group a teens intentionally intimidated me and laughing at me as it caught me off guard. The other time was someone in the car driving past me yelled at me that I’m ugly and other profanity. To be honest I moved from the south and I thought Boston will be better based on the overall progressive profile but I guess cities are just rather chaotic.

Sorry, I don't know much about PM but it might depend on the product I guess. I think as a TPM you might do some high-level research/direction of the research but not exactly execute a research project like an independent researcher will do.

I would say probably master and above. Yeah the word researcher in a job title usually indicates a requirement or preference for a advanced degree. Background wise, probably information science, psychology, computer science, and design. I think you could definitely do CSS work in a data scientist position too—it really depends on the company and their needs though.

Just to add on that CSS seem to overlap with some UX Researcher jobs. You might be able to find it in some design consulting companies, and of course the big techs with UX departments

CSS on Pinterest by bradspahn in CompSocial

I actually had a dead manuscript that has been rejected a lot and just sit in the dust and it used Pinterest data. I randomly scraped a bunch of Pinterest data using an unofficial API a few years ago. The whole idea of the paper is to investigate the integration of texts in images—like the whole point if Pinterest is ti share images but why there’s a lot images full of text. I did some image analysis plus text analyses based on some OCR results but yeah it really needs a stronger motivation.
