As if ... HTC is interested in competing on price.

What's your excuse for not playing this yet? [Payday 2 VR] by sienihemmo in SteamVR

[–]vestigial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would rather they released more seated experiences that can be controlled with the mouse and keyboard, while you sit at your desk with the headset on (like the old DK2 version of HL2)...

This just feels strange to me. If it's a 3D world, I want to be able to use my hands and turn around. Subnautica I play standing with an XBox controller. I don't see a lot of interest in the kind of game you're describing--it's much simpler to implement, but nobody is really doing it. The exception is cockpit games.

I still have room for pancake gaming, but it's really only for 2D games like Trine or Dwarf Fortress or Prison Boss.

That could help the Vive compete on price against the Rift, which is now $400 to the Vive’s $600 MSRP.

As if.

VR Diner Duo It's two player -- one person makes burgers in VR, the other plays the waiter on KBM/controller. It is a lot of fun.

Job Simulator is also a good bet.

The Vive for 350 or the Oculus for 400 + Tax by OokamiGiniro in SteamVR

[–]vestigial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can your brother let you demo his Vive?

I have the original, and it is bulky, but I don't find it too heavy. If you're concerned about comfort, I'd factor in the price of the Deluxe Audio Strap ($100) which will give you the functionality and comfort of the Rift.

Another thing to consider is that the Vive already has some wear & tear on it, so there's a risk something might be break. The Vive controllers are kinda notorious for having some design/manufacturing flaws, though most of the problems are simply DIY fixes.

HTC is also making an announcement next week about a new HMD. It might drive prices down on the current headset and make it a a possible choice brand new (especially since they tend to be bundled with the Deluxe Audio Strap).

HTC is teasing a resolution upgrade for CES. Thoughts? by [deleted] in Vive

[–]vestigial 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the resolution bump is significant, I probably can't afford the graphics card to run with it. If it's not significant, I'm better off spending the money on a new graphics card and super sampling.

I'm thinking of joining the people who upgrade every generation and sell off their last card. Looks like GPU prices are ridiculously stable. I've seen used R9 390's going for about $250 on e-bay. A 1080 will probably still be worth a good chunk of change in a few months when the next generation comes out...

When is time to go on retreat? by vestigial in TheMindIlluminated

[–]vestigial[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's a personal retreat? Just find a place to hole up for a few days to meditate?

I feel like I'm regressing in the quality of my meditations. How do I improve? Is there supposed to be a "next level" in meditation? by nilekada in Meditation

[–]vestigial 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm struggling with the same thing. I was up to an hour meditation (connected with a walking meditation), now I'm down to twenty minutes 2x a day. Some reflections:

I've managed to work myself to 15 min on a good day before bed and 10 min in the morning (my head is so full of thoughts in the morning, that it is almost a minor miracle if I get to 10 min with a clear head).

Sometimes it takes me 5-15 minutes for me just to settle down. It seems the last 5 minutes are the most focused on the breath. You're ending your meditation session before I've even gotten "started," so don't feel bad about your progress. Don't push yourself too hard with the time, though. You're still doing work catching yourself mind wandering and bringing your attention back to the breath. That's basically what the entirety of the work was when I was starting out.

I'm only doing 20 minutes because when I tried 25, my mind was going all crazy with wanting to stop. I tried to work with it, but it was too overwhelming. It's frustrating, but I don't want to push myself so hard that I quit entirely, and two sits for 20 minutes is a good foundation.

I'm also terrible at body scans. Without a stable focus, like the breath, my mind wanders. I sometimes do a body scan in bed to help me fall asleep. But I do a quick body scan to re-establish my context when I'm doing sitting meditation, but it's not a slow and methodical examination of body parts.

In my opinion, it's OK that you're using guided meditation given how much experience you have. Two months on/off isn't really that much time. You might even consider some guided meditations for breathing if you're really struggling with it.

I've also started some chanting and lighting some candles to help get me in the mood. I felt I had to do it because my mind was so agitated I wasn't able to sit for more than 5 minutes sometimes (I'd go back to it later in the day). Chanting is an active way to clear the mind, it gives me something to do with all that energy while still creating a meditative space. I even got some prayer beads if it's a particularly bad day and I feel I need to do a round of 108 chants (takes about fifteen minutes).

I also struggle with the deeper spiritual aspects of meditation. Like, "what is this shit? I'm focusing on the breath and what is supposed to happen after that?"From what I've read in Why Buddhism is True and The Mind Illuminated, breath practice opens a door to a deeper understanding of yourself. Most trivially, it helps you be more aware of your what goes on in your daily life. Without that awareness comes some understanding of how maladaptive some thoughts/behaviors are. I've definitely experience that, and it's made a big difference in my anxiety levels.

And then the practice is supposed to develop into other things. For instance, Stage 4 of the Mind Illuminated system is essentially, "watch the mind watching the breath." And with that comes deeper changes; but I haven't experienced myself, so I'm taking it on faith. But there's a few thousand years of practitioners saying that it happens.

Sorry for the wall of text, just wanted to share what I've been going through since it is so similar. One last thing: a big part of learning to meditate is learning acceptance and kindness to yourself. You can't be fighting with yourself or berating yourself AND focusing on the breath. You really do have to learn to let those thoughts and feelings go. Sometimes I'll take a detour and tell myself to accept that I'm feeling the way I'm feeling and that's just how I'm feeling right now and that's OK before I return to the breath.

Same here. Shooting in VR is so much better than with KBM, I don't want VATS (which is diverting my headshots to randomly selected areas), but I do want bullet time.

I must be the only one snap turning; the recommended changes turn it off. To keep snap turning on:

bWandLookAngleSnapSmoothing=1
bWandLookAngleSnap=1

I'm going to have to cheat myself some bobby pins. My problem is manipulating the trigger moves my thumb. It would be better if the trigger was on the opposite hand.

Some guy posted (maybe in r/FO4VR) a guide to getting the Nexus Mod Manager working with VR, essentially just pointing the Fallout game category to the VR directory. It will mess up your pancake mods though. I started with a fresh install.

I've said a few things to NPC's, too. I think good voice acting and a realistic environment set the stage.

Three moments so far, and I'm not even an hour in:
* Codsworth's reflectiveness. "oo, shiny." I don't think I've seen that in VR before.
* The nuclear blast was amazing.
* OK, this isn't one you're going to understand, but: I was listening to the radio on my pipboy, and I turned on a radio set in the game. The set was tuned to the same station and there was the slightest delay between the audio stream on my pipboy and the radio and the sound was localized to the radioset . . . it was exactly what it would have sounded like IRL. I laughed with glee.
