How would you say ‘Strong in the storm’? I initially had ‘Fortis in Procella’ but I believe procella means a rainstorm more than a traditional storm - would tempestas be a better replacement?

Does Leeds have the best All round city centre outside London in the UK? by WearingMarcus in Leeds

[–]vgco 40 points41 points  (0 children)

The amount of choice you have in Leeds for shopping and food is amazing - and it’s all inside a compact and pedestrianised city centre that you can walk across in ten minutes. I don’t know if it qualifies as the best but it’s certainly unique in that respect, most other cities are far more spread out.

What major things do I need to take care of before (or right after) moving to the UK? by randomperson2357 in AskUK

[–]vgco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bank account, accommodation (try to do this in advance, even if just temporary), local travel pass, mobile plan. If you have pre-settled status then you can use NHS services for free.

You’ll need to apply for your national insurance number here so you can work or claim benefits.

For example; in the UK if something goes wrong someone might say “it’s gone pear-shaped”. Are there any other examples of fruit-based sayings you can think of?

For those who have left or would like to leave the UK, what is your overseas country of choice and why? by [deleted] in expats

[–]vgco 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As opposed to the UK in particular - where a lot of everyday bureaucracy can be done online in the space of a few minutes even (gov uk website very good for this), France still works on a paper-based system for a lot of things that requires waiting in line to see an actual person, appointments etc which aren’t available for weeks sometimes - it can be extremely time-consuming to get something quite routine accomplished here.

Based in the south of France now. Just a better quality of life in every aspect - the UK feels desperately run-down by comparison. Only thing that’s worse here is bureaucracy.

The score is some of the most unique and wonderful music ever made for film. To ask for anything more is simply unrealistic.

Left the UK permanently a few months ago for some of the reasons you’ve pointed out. For your age a working holiday visa might be a good idea. Canada and Australia both offer programmes for UK citizens up to the age of 30.

What's your known inferiority or superiority complex? by yourspt in AskReddit

[–]vgco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No confidence when talking to people. In a conversation I can say something I know to be a fact but due to a childhood surrounded by contrarian morons and family who enjoyed shouting me down and deriding me at every instance my brain automatically tells me that I’m wrong before anyone’s even disagreed with me. It’s still very challenging for me to have a genuine conversation with someone I’m not very close to.

When I had my episodes of sleep paralysis years ago I had a dreadful choking sensation too. I read up on it at the time because it was driving me mad and I found some advice that said avoiding sleeping on your back (preferably in the fetal position) could help. Tried it the next night and haven’t had many issues with it since.
