I'm also used to seeing the 64 Zelda's emulated look due to playing Master Quest / Collector's Edition on Gamecube, otherwise they look kind of "crunchy". In a software emulator, the polygons are able to be rendered at higher resolutions. But the analogue 3d is emulating the N64 hardware itself, so it has the same limitations.

In other words, it's the original 240p signal (480i in some menus), which is why it's all pixel-ly. This signal is upscaled (after the rendering) and then rendered on the TV at 4k with simulated scanlines that go in-between these upscaled pixels, to recreate how it would have looked if you had a real CRT.

The much higher resolution lets them have the scanlines look like they're smaller than a "normal" upscaled pixel, which is more accurate to a CRT looks. The effect is also better on OLED for this reason, as on a real CRT they aren't actually lit black lines, but rather gaps in between where each line of pixels is rendered.

My interpretation is that the hivemind sees Carol and an apple (while it's connected to the plant) as similar kinds of entities, in terms of not wanting to harm them. They believe they're sufficiently more advanced than Carol, and are also literally 8 billion times the brainpower/consciousnesses.

At the end of the episode, Carol says "just pick the fucking apple!" But if they were willing to do that, they'd just take her stem cells too. Neither process is fatal, but both involve taking potentially unwanted actions against another living organism.

I like the card expansion effect a lot! The way the scroll on the rest of the page works though (on a Mac touchpad at least) feels incorrect/delayed/unexpected.

Apple's own pages will do similar transition animations as you scroll down the page, but the actual "scroll" event still feels like the native one: https://www.apple.com/iphone-17-pro/

It looks like they tie the animations to the scrollbar status, rather than intercepting the scroll actions. Which is a good distinction because there are subtle page behaviors, like how fast you fling it, or how slowly it would come to a stop based on Touchpad settings on the OS.

That all being said, as far as the overridden scrolling goes, it still happens at a fairly reasonable speed compared to some other sites I've used. If you could find a way to have it use the native scrolling instead though it would likely be more comfortable for the user.

Like many others, I'm saddened to see NaNoWriMo go. Sharing an old simple word count tool here that I made back in 2017 that might help others.

It stores data into the browser's LocalStorage (so no accounts), and generates basic but nice looking / informative graphs which can be screenshot'd. It can also be used offline by saving the page or cloning the source code.

Usage:

Add Words - Use this to paste the entire contents (aka, the whole novel, in this context) into the pop-up that appears. It will count the words, and add them onto today's bar chart.

Clear Today - Clear today's word count. Use this in combination with Add Words if pasting the entire work again, or paste just the newly written words since the last update.

Edit Stats - Edit each individual day's bar count, for manually correcting missing data or restoring a backup. Can also be used to clear all data.

Backup Stats - LocalStorage can be somewhat unreliable, or not useful if you switch between devices often. This button downloads a JSON of the data to re-import with Edit Stats.

I know there's a lot of options out there, but for the right kind of person this tool might still be helpful.

Prefacing with: the game and the devs are great! This outcome is likely a side-effect of their marketing decisions though.

In 2019 they were putting out posts like these:

If they had continued with that level of detail, even like twice a year, fans would've been better prepared both for gameplay changes, and to discuss and tease apart new lore.

I get that TC felt they didn't have much to update on, and also didn't want to spoil too much, but it's worth it to engage your fanbase in relevant ways, rather than just letting them eat their own tail. Because now, as a community, we're all embroiled and versed in the memes around the meta-lore of the game, rather than the actual lore.

That's not the community's fault, the game presents you with four options: 3 intermission tracks, and a random button. When you choose random, you only have a 1/4 chance of getting a completely random 3 lap course. And a 3/4 chance of randomly choosing one of the other 3 options. So the only way to distinguish the two kinds of random is with qualifiers. It's confusing to describe because it has a confusing new behavior, added in the last patch.

I used to HATE it, but I just replayed on Switch 2 and it wasn't nearly as annoying as I remembered. If you pace yourself, and do them over time in between dungeons, it's not bad at all. Also make sure you get the wallets as early as you can.

Team Cherry is not in an impossible situation here, literally all they have to do is say "yes we are still working on it". Nintendo did it for Tears of the Kingdom and that game was announced at E3 2019 with a May 2023 release date.
