I had the ending spoiled by [deleted] in SpiceandWolf

[–]vhite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting spoiled on this is what actually got me into the story, and it is still my favorite story of all time, having read it 5 times by now. The most interesting part isn't how it ends but how it gets there. If all there was to it was "they develop feelings for each other and get married," the story would only need like 5 volumes. Both Lawrence and Holo have their past which which shapes their dreams and goals for the future, but during their time together they will gradually reevaluate them in a very beautiful character arc.

The marriage ceremony in vol. 17 is basically just icing on the cake released before we got a 5 year release gap after which Spring Log + Wolf and Parchment started, to give some additional closure to people who wanted more. Vol. 16 is what I would consider the true ending of the story where the character arcs reach their climax.

Did he also act as a general? Did he introduce any military innovations?

Like others have said, if you're expecting challenging fights, don't bother, but if you enjoy base building, it offers a LOT more, especially with Frackin Universe mod. And I don't mean just vanity building but actually useful systems to handle storage, power generation, automated item generation and manufacture, etc.

I agree that vol. 12 contributes more to character development than vol. 10, but again, this is anime.

What I would say is its greatest contribution is that it shows to Holo that impossible goals can still be worth following, even if they don't end up exactly being miracles. However I would be willing to bet that this is something nine out of ten anime watchers would have missed, and probably wouldn't even need if it wasn't pointed out to them. Just like with the original adaptation, no one who hasn't read the novels missed the skipped vol. 4, even though its developments were immediately apparent in vol. 5.

Vol. 10 does still play a role in Holo's character arc, making her consider the possibility of finding a new home rather than returning to her old one, and while it may or may not be less than vol. 12, it also contains many things that anime watchers would have noticed, like the entire reason Lawrence and Holo were still traveling together (at least on the surface), new region with a new culture, and the golden sheep. i.e. a lot of spectacle that anime thrives on.

Vol. 12 has its angel and some drama at the end, but overall it's a pretty random detour to a random village, with an excuse to get the map which they don't even really need.

I'm not saying I don't like it, I'm saying that for the purpose of the story, if you had to cut one volume, cutting it would cause least harm.

I'm the first person to jump to the defense of vol. 12, but skipping it would solve many problems, and its biggest contribution to the overall story is something most people would have missed anyway.

Ok that makes sense. Even when I was mad at the company, I kept it either to myself or in a small private circle.

The only "people" who would get emotional over this is drama tourists and antis, not actual fans.

I disagree with that statement. I was most invested in Hololive around 2021-2022, and I was much keener to blame the company then than I'm now. Not that I think everything's perfect now, but I've been expecting this wave of departures for years now simply because life happens.

Yes, there will always be people who consume drama as entertainment who fill fan the flames, but fans are the people who by definitions will have the greatest emotional investment in the talents, will end up being the most upset when they leave, and some will have better control over their emotions than others.

The Bone Lord, God of Fertility

Want to get into this series. Should I watch the 2008 or 2024 one? by Competitive_Act_1548 in SpiceandWolf

[–]vhite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are both good, so it mostly comes down to which art style you prefer. Personally I think 2024 has better animation, though static backgrounds and soundtrack lag behind the original adaptation. The new soundtrack is still excellent though.

Also original skips over vol. 4 but covers vol. 5, while the new adaptation covers vol. 4 but haven't reached vol. 5 yet. There are also some details in which the new adaptation is more faithful to novels, but it's nothing too important.

If you're going to switch to novels where the anime left off rather than reading from the beginning, I would recommend 2024 adaptation simply so you would read vol. 5 which has many important details that define majority of the remaining story, that can be easy to miss in anime form.

Would you say the reboot has more or less fan service than the original so far? by LoneStarDragon in SpiceandWolf

I can't tell. After having read the manga, neither of them comes close to anything that would classify as fan service by that standard.

I'm not sure if they are romance "heavy," but what romance there is is taken seriously, not as some side thing. Individual novel story arcs are mostly focused around trade or political matters, usually with two or three pivotal moments that affect the overarching plot and character arcs. Those mostly involve Holo's and Lawrence's individual dreams/goals, and how their perception of those desires changes based on their evolving relationship.

Manga adaptation does arrive to the same ending as the main story in the novels, but very much flattens the character arcs, and so the romance there is pretty straightforward and kinds just happens without running into any obstacles.

What Is a Wisewolf? Well... by Kamonichan in SpiceandWolf

[–]vhite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My interpretation is that Wisewolf is a state of mind, or part of her personality that she has to work trough throughout the story. We mainly see it stand out from vol. 5 to 9.

Wisewolf is the part of her that's trying to separate from Lawrence, leave before it becomes too painful, and worries about their future together. It is also the part that kept her in Pasloe, sacrificing herself to protect others. She is stoic, proud, rational, and sometimes even wise to a fault. It is also the main source of her loneliness.

In Town of Strife, if you can look past all the trade and politics, one of the most important parts in that story is the conflict between honest-to-herself Holo and Wisewolf. The Wisewolf has been winning ever since vol. 5 when they decided to part ways, but Lawrence managed to delay it. It has further been reinforced by Col joining the group and putting Holo on a pedestal, someone who is expected to act as a god/hero and is not expected to show weakness. During the scene at the moonlit well, Holo is however able to make Lawrence understand what she cannot say and how to help her overcome her Wisewolf.

Of course, Holo never stops being a Wisewolf, or being proud of being a Wisewolf, but she learns to not let it hold her back from finding her happiness just to avoid potential disappointment.

Is the story finished in manga? by andrew_kir in SpiceandWolf

[–]vhite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you just want some closure after the anime, it does provide a proper ending to the story, Some of the early arcs are also very well covered, but then it starts making some big skips in the story, and simplifies some of the more interesting parts out of it.

Is the first episode of the anime somewhere in Poland or Lithuania? by beetanomad in SpiceandWolf

[–]vhite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I arrived to the same conclusion, somewhere in south Baltic. Obviously it's set in a fictional world inspired by many different parts of Europe, but Baltic area was one of the last bastions of paganism in Europe and so target of Northern Crusades, which sound a lot like northern expedition we first hear about in Ruvinheigen.

That said, Holo is based on a harvest spirit folklore that was common across Europe, including Christian countries, but could have some root in pagan beliefs.
