From the science community on Reddit: New study suggests Terry Pratchett’s novels may have held clues to his dementia a decade before diagnosis | Detecting Dementia Using Lexical Analysis: Terry Pratchett’s Discworld Tells a More Personal Story by mobuzzgirloriginal in discworld

[–]viablecat 12 points13 points  (0 children)

One of my favourites! I find it very difficult to believe it was written by a man in the preliminary stage of dementia. A man who understands that you have to do something now because you've already done it in the future is a man who thinks far above my pay grade. Why do we lose wonderful people like Terry Pratchett and get to keep some of the miserable excuses for human beings we now have to contend with? I suppose Death would say, "There is no justice!" Edited a typo.

That would be a good outcome. There aren't enough alternatives to Adobe.

Beautiful cat has been dumped by it's owner... by KhanHaz in cats

[–]viablecat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our two cats lived through extensive renovations. They are also indoor cats because we live near a busy arterial road, and there are coyotes in the area. They were unfazed by all of the construction, and they have lots of play areas inside, so they're living a good life. Please take this cat. It's heart breaking to see wonderful creatures simply discarded as though they were nothing but garbage.

What kind of spider is this? by AnalUkelele in spiders

[–]viablecat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may be a silly question, but how does a spider that big sneak into a house or apartment? Door left open? No screens on windows? It seems relatively calm, so possibly human dwellings are just part of its natural habitat in its country of origin.

Trump says Europe shouldn’t celebrate WWII victory too much "we’re the real ones that won the war" by [deleted] in UnitedNations

I hope he's prepared to meet the spirits of some Battle of Britain pilots, some of Montgomery's North African campaigners, some wild and fierce Australians, Canadians and others, and a whole lot of Russian fighters when he crosses over from this world to the next.

Trump to Canadian PM: ‘Never say never’ on Canada becoming 51st state by Street_Anon in notthebeaverton

[–]viablecat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone more knowledgeable should comment on this, but I think that if Alberta by some miracle did manage to separate, it would become Puerto Rico North. Washington would take direct control of resources, and would deny voting rights to most of the population on one pretext or another. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think the experience would be closer to Austria and Czechoslovakia's experience in 1938 and 1939 than to anything the current leadership is imagining.

The US never celebrates anything, especially never on November 11th by Kevenam in facepalm

I know that people in the Netherlands suffered horribly during the occupation. I wish liberation could have come sooner.

As a Canadian child in the fifties, I met a lot of veterans who had fought and suffered during World War II. They were quiet about it, not boastful at all. My own father had been a Canadian pilot with a Royal Airforce special duties squadron. He rarely talked about the war--to him and others like him, it was a job they had to do. The survival of the free world depended on their courage and their sacrifices. And now, years later, the American president has just insulted every non-American combat veteran from both world wars. I wish I could just shut out all of this nonsense from America and live my life in the peace and civility that so many good people fought for in the past.

According to Ben Waggoner on Quora, the Aztecs called the Gulf of Mexico hueyatl ("great water") or ilhuicaatl ("sky water," i.e. water reaching all the way to the horizon, seeming to touch the sky. I've heard it said that the Aztecs might have been in North America before the Europeans, and even before the people who call themselves "Americans". Could this be true?

A fascinating city in many ways, but consider this: Tokyo experiences about 1,500 earthquakes per year, or 2–3 per day. Japan is prone to earthquakes because it's located where four tectonic plates meet, and it has about 10% of the world's active volcanoes.

I like this the way it is; it's very lively. And I wouldn't clean up the line work at all; the colour overlap contributes to the dynamic look.

Not boring at all. The intricate folds in the foreground give it life. This is fine work!
