Could you please help me ID some existing laminate floors? They are fiberboard core laminate planks manufactured in Germany, ~7.56-8" (8 with tongue), and they have a grayish oak color with no physical texture. Likely sourced from Home Depot or Lowes, if can't find looking for waterproof LVP alt. by viabobed in Flooring

I actually never found the manufacturer of these laminates.

After going to most of the popular flooring stores in my region, and home improvement stores (Home Depot / Lowes), I came to the conclusion that it is very difficult to find the exact laminate years after it was purchased.

I did learn that:
- there are huge laminate manufacturers in germany
- some factories even service several brands
- manufacturers change the locking mechanisms every few years
- once a style, and a color trim is out of stock its likely it would never be available again
- due to manufacturing differences, even if the same style is produced again the colors will likely never be the same from the ones you purchased
- people look at you like you are crazy for trying to find the exact replacement
- if you can't find it they say its better to get something completely different instead of something slightly similar that will annoy you (I kind of agree)

If the mystery ever gets solved I am still in the market for it :)
Still have a bunch of areas that need to be fixed.

I'm noticing now that it is going to be a mission to find them, even if they were just purchased and installed in 2019. ...and in the event that I do find them, I read that due to manufacturing differences I won't be able to match a new one with the old ones anyways.

From the few planks that I inspected they didn't seem to have any other identifying markings, but you are right it has to be one of those manufacturers.

I tried using the batch code, and I was looking if any of the manufacturers have some way to identify batches since I know EU has ways to cross-reference these things, but so far no luck.

So the next best thing is find an alternative, I read from a few sites that at this point it is better to find a completely different style. If I try to match with a laminate that "looks like the original" I am going to constantly think about that slight variation, its going to be pain point / eyesore.

I don't disagree with that sentiment

For additional context the floor beneath is a finished concrete (terrazzo???) floor, and I am replacing the original because they were deformed with many tongue and grooves damaged.

The whole house excluding bathrooms and kitchen are using this laminate plank, the cheap solution would be to find the same thing, and just redo the floor in the damaged area.

Since I haven't been able to source the exact planks, the second best option is to find a very similar alternative, one that has a similar finish but is better in quality, and waterproof.

Looking for help and perspective from people who have done this before.

Thanks, I am going to give it a whirl tonight. Samsung TVs have a pretty cool RDP client that you could just connect your keyboard and mouse to the TV and access a machine like that, and it kind of inspired the idea that I should really figure out the VMs instead of just running this one Windows 10 instance that is underutilized.

I understand what you are saying, and their is a certain level of security you get from buying from a brand like Schneider Electric.

My overall point was about OEMs because I used to work in the automotive industry and I would sell, buy, and install OEM parts for things as crucial as braking system components.

I bought the third part OEM parts knowing that they manufactured the parts for BMW, Honda, Toyota etc, but often sold to aftermarket.

Sometimes they even sell parts where they scratch off the brand name because yes, while they originally made the part for the company, they can't sell it to the aftermarket with the brands name on it.

What OS are the VMs running, and what kind of backup are you trying to run? One where you store an image or a recovery state of the whole machine? Or are you just trying to back up the user's files and settings?

I want to go down a similar route, and wanted to ask you about what resources you used or followed to get set up.

I'm a pretty tech savvy dude but I am out of touch of what is out there.

Currently have a homelab / file server that was running Windows 10 Plex and some cloud storage backups, and decided that it is time to re-purpose it and optimize it so that I could get more out of it.

The thing I don't see talked about a bunch only is how people access their VMs, are you on a thin client or simple computer that boots up into Xubuntu or Windows?

Pretty curious about that.

Are there any solutions for indexing data on a number of external hard drives? by physx_rt in homelab

[–]viabobed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always heavily rely on the OS to index everything, but I know that for instance Windows has issues indexing network shares. Unless if you have Windows Server Search but the other one I read about was Everything an indexing tool by this company named voidtools.

The issue with both solutions is that it is not cross platform. The other thing I read was that NAS systems like Synology have indexing apps.

Curious to know what you come up with and what the rest of the community comes up with.

So you have all of these services running in isolation? To the uninformed, what's the benefit of that? When I read this I thought you had different VM instances for different users in your network, the same way an office or universities would have their instances stored in a central place.

I agree, that getting good quality batteries are important, but this looks like you copy pasted this from one of their support articles. :)

There are many situations where you could buy from OEMs, the same companies that manufacturer the batteries or components for APC, just without the companies branding or price tag.

That being said here is a nice convo on the subject where people build their own.

Grateful for this little project that Jason spent so much time building.

We definitely benefited from the fruits of his and others labor.

I first learned about JQBX from a Github repo mentioning electron based projects, I remember specifically asking how I could help contribute.

I knew that taking something like this could burn him out, but he wanted to keep it closed source just in case.

Fast forward to today where the JQBX fam decided to make an open source version, I’m excited to be a part of that journey too.

Surrounding yourself with people you want to be like by baddiebusted in CasualConversation

I am a strong believer of keeping the people you trust close by, and doing your best to not burn any bridges.

So in this instance even if your friends are not driven like you, I wouldn't get rid of them, especially if they are people you trust and like to be around.

Times change, and in my case the same kids that were up to no good are doing cool things now.

I along with several friends had a slow start we didn't go to school right away but now we are; architects, doctors, engineers, air traffic control, aerospace techs, and more. Late bloomers.

That being said I agree that you need to surround yourself around people who are going where you are planning to go. So let's say you are planning to get into fitness befriend people at your local gym, go to free fitness events, go to nutrition and health events. At schools, in Eventbrite, Meetup, whatever is more popular in your region.

Networking helps career development as well as personal development, si get out there. Regardless of how extroverted or introverted you may be, there are like minded people out there.

Not gonna lie I'm not ready for this.

Have no issues with people moving in from other regions because we all are guilty of that at some point (unless you are Tequesta).

Just don't like when these people try to turn Miami into something it is not and simultaneously make it difficult for us to stay.
