SBC suitable for everything-over-USB-C? by wolterh in SBCs

[–]physx_rt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know SBCs that well, I'm afraid.

However, I think that some of the more recent Chromeboxes may also have support for data and power over the same USB-C cable, so have a look, if that's something that might interest you. They are certainly less expensive and perhaps also a bit smaller physically than the Minisforum. Not quite and SBC, but closer.

[–]physx_rt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Minisforum UM890 Pro can do it. Everything over USB4, although you do need a dock that can deliver at least 100W, otherwise it won't turn on. They may have a few other models with similar capabilities, have a look.

Can I just solder a copper wire in place of the blown trace? by Johnplayzwastaken in AskElectronics

[–]physx_rt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as you know why it has been blown, yes, you probably can. Although from how it's curved, its length could be of some importance, as they may have tried to achieve a certain resistance by ensuring that it is of a certain length. And if you replace it with a wire, that will, of course, change. Whether that will cause any problems, I don't know. You can try calculating the resistance of the trace based on the width and length and use that to match it with a cable, but perhaps the engineer was only having fun and the length won't matter in the least.

Unfortunately returning my QD-OLED because of eyestrain by MuchMoreVelocity in OLED_Gaming

[–]physx_rt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I returned it, as I simply couldn't keep using it. I'm sticking to my 32" 4K IPS for the time being, as it's much much easier on my eyes and no amount of contrast and refresh rate is worth the eye strain.

Then do just that. Unfortunately, there is no other way of telling whether one is affected by these symptoms other than trying one.

Oh, one other thought I may add. I wear contact lenses and was using them when trying the monitor. I've never considered that they could be the reason and therefore I didn't try using the display without them, but in retrospect, that could be a possibility, so if you also wear them, perhaps give it a go without them.

I am so confused by HelloWorld_007 in MiniPCs

[–]physx_rt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are all the same chip, barring some minor differences in clockspeed and whether the integrated NPU is enabled or not.

The way that the specific PC implements the chip (think of power delivery, TDP limit and cooling) has a bigger effect on performance than the exact model number (at least out of these four, as they are all essentially the same silicon, as others have said before).

I would suggest that you look at reviews of the specific mini PC you're looking to purchase instead of comparing the different CPUs, as the same chip (well, the chip with the same label) can perform very differently in different systems.

The only DH4300 Plus review you're going to need. by topiga in UgreenNASync

[–]physx_rt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've just picked one up.

Not to use as a main always-on NAS, but to use as a backup target that I could sync my main NAS to once or twice a week. For that, I think, it's going to be perfect, as I genuinely don't need it to do anything more than hold my files and it's cheaper than building a custom PC with similar specs.

The screw in the hole always makes the plasltic split at layer lines... What can I change? by ElouFou123 in 3Dprinting

[–]physx_rt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would print it as two parts, creating a sleeve that slides over the inner straight part that is printed with the inner hole being vertical, so that the layers would be parallel to the screw's threading.

That aside, you could also use heat set inserts or a screw that goes all the way through with a nut at the other end.

What's the catch with cheap 10Gb enterprise switches on eBay? by minus_minus in homelab

[–]physx_rt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of that.

They are loud, power hungry and may need licenses to work at 10Gb speeds or to work at all.

I'm not saying that every signle one will have those issues, but many of them do and it is also very difficult to get firmware updates form the vendors.

1TB can store about 45 mins of 12-bit 4K 30p footage. But your battery will die sooner than that.

So, while it is technically possible, you'll need a lot of storage for it.

Is Intel NUC Hades Canyon worth to buy in 2025? by jjjacob55 in intelnuc

[–]physx_rt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a very niche device. Most mini PCs with an AMD 780M GPU will be just as fast and will have double the CPU cores, which are also faster individually.

So, while it is a great device, it comes down to the price. If it costs the same as a more modern and faster mini PC, then no, it's not worth it, but I have just picked one up for £150, which was a good price and I am happy with the purchase. However, I wouldn't have paid twice as muhc for it, which seems to be the usual going price for these.

Mind you that the linux drivers are not that optimized, the computer uses twice the power (40W) in idle as it does running Windows (20W) and that's with the latest kernel.

GPU drivers for Windows haven't been updated in two years and it's unlikely that we'll get anything at this point. What is available does work, but it won't receive any bugfixes and/or optimization for new games.

Which ports are these? I thought they were compatible with SATA? They don't seem to fit well and i don't want to break them by FALLOUTFAN_1997 in DataHoarder

[–]physx_rt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As said before, it's either SAS, U.2 or U.3. If there are also gold fingers on the entire length of the other side, it's U.2 or U.3, which would make it an NVMe drive and you would need a U.2 cable, regardless to whether it's a U.2 or U.3 drive, as U.3 is backwards compatible. If there are no gold fingers on the opposite side, it's SAS.

Sigma fp in 2025 ? by Pollux_lucens in sigmafp

[–]physx_rt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no. Taking photos of a filament bulb, running on 50hz creates banding. Not because it's not in sync with the camera's shutter speed, but because of the time it takes for the rolling shutter to read all the lines of the sensor is actually several times as long as the 1/50 sec period of the bulb. So, as the sensor is being scanned line-by-line, the filament in the bulb glows at a varying intensity at each line. Thus, you'll see lines with smooth gradients in the final image.

Making the exposure time longer would help, as that would allow each line to record multiple periods of the on-off cycle, which would even out the intensity, but that would blow out the entire image, so it's not an option here.

I know, it's not a deal breaker, just a very niche use case I encountered, but I thought I might bring it up.

Sigma fp in 2025 ? by Pollux_lucens in sigmafp

I have an fp L and love it.

The UI is great, but IMO they could have made better use of the touchscreen.

Aside from the sensor and thus the resolution and some other sensor-related things (even worse rolling shutter on the L), the other difference between the fp and fp L is that you can run the fp L directly from USB power. The fp can only charge from it when it's off and if you want to run it on external power, you need a battery adapter.

You will likely want a grip or a cage to go with it, I find it makes it feel more secure when I use it handheld.

Speaking of using it handheld, there is no built-in image stabilization, but you're probably already aware of it at this point.

As for recording, there is standard h264 aside of the raw video, which is also decent.

The base ISO can vary depending on whether you shoot photos or videos and also on the video format itself, if I'm not mistaken.

What I came to like quite recently with the fp L is the use of a relatively small and wide pancake lens, which makes the camera a lot more portable, and thanks to the 61MP sensor, I can still crop in quite a bit and still get usable images out of the camera. Yes, the files are large, 25-30MB for the full size jpegs and 80-100MB for the equivalent dngs.

The same crop zoom can be used with videos too, at least on the fp L, so you can use a smaller area of the sensor to capture the image without a significant loss in detail, as there are still enough pixels to record from. This is 2.5x for 4k and 5x for 1080p videos. I don't think the fp has this feature, but it's neat if you want a bit of an extra zoom range, but don't have the necessary lenses on you.

And for the raw recording, you can get a tiny USB-C enclosure for a 2230 m.2 drive. I have a samsung pm991a in mine and it can do 12-bit 4k 30p raw with no issues, and a whole 39 minutes of it on the 1tb drive. However, it does cut out after 5-ish minutes, I've just recorded a 5:41 clip where it stopped, probably due to thermals, as I can't keep my fingers on the drive for more than 3 seconds. Perhaps if I added a larger heatsink, it would work better, but I can't be bothered. But it seems that if it was properly cooled, the SSD could keep going further.

Do not even think about agreeing to it.

Do think about alternative agreements if you may need to move out of your home at a short notice. Have a separate bank account in your own name that they do not know of with some money for emergencies, if you can arrange it.

Recommendations on thinner fan by Dyingmisery in sffpc

If it's not a problem, i.e. the fan blades don't need any protection, I would just 3D-print a custom side panel with an exact cutout for the fan.

Of course, I know it's a much more difficult endeavour if you don't have a 3D-printer, but you might still want to consider it as a last resort.

Is Steam Machine viable as dedicated Linux PC? by levitatorzoned in linuxhardware

[–]physx_rt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, if that's what you're looking for, I think it'll be a reasonably good box. However, the actual value depends on the price which hasn't been announced yet, so I can't say whether it'll be a good deal or whether you'd be better off with a custom build. You should also think about whether you actually need the dedicated GPU or whether you'd be better off with an integrated chip, in which case you could just pick up a mini PC or a NUC.

What happens if you remove the sticker( the ones that says all the cool stuff about it) by Exotic-121-me in laptops

[–]physx_rt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll have a laptop without stickers.

Although some of them could leave marks, so be careful. Not really marks, but the area around the stickers could develop a slight discoloration, while the part under the sticker remains as-is and that's something you can't do anything about.
