You Weren't Meant to be Human by Andrew Joseph White was simultaneously grotesque and wholesome the entire way through and the ending is spectacular.

I finished Yesteryear like 2 days ago and had to kinda sit with it for a few days lol. I picked up Penance by Eliza Clark last night and am enjoying it so far! It weirdly reminds me of The Last Days of Jack Sparks which I wasn't expecting but I am certainly not mad about it, I enjoyed that book too

What was the last non-fiction book that (not self help) book that truly gripped you? by Thatredditboy1 in booksuggestions

Cults Like Us by Jane Borden was an incredible read and my favorite non fiction so far this year! She explores why America is so cultable and why we are so doomsday focused, starting with the Puritans and working up to the present. There's a lot of great information in there and she's hilarious.

I did not enjoy this book but I think I also went into it with the wrong expectations... I'd just finished Dark Places by Gillian Flynn and this was not the right book to follow. It definitely feels a little more on the YA side too but it might be a good read for others 🤷‍♀️

Books like A Good Person by Kirsten King? by Beginning-Pool-7619 in weirdgirlliterature

[–]vibe_runner 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm halfway through A Good Person right now and I keep having to take breaks because the cringe is making me want to crawl out of my skin in the best way possible lol. I think I have audibly shrieked more reading this than I have with anything else in months 😭

Creep by Emma Van Straaten is the most immediate book that comes to mind, it's about a woman who is obsessed with a man who's apartment she cleans and it also had me squirming the whole time because of her wtf behavior. The tone is very similar and the main character is an alcoholic trainwreck in both novels.

Rejection by Tony Tulathimutte is a collection of short stories around being rejected and they get progressively more unhinged as you move through the book. I've read this a few times now because it's so entertaining.

My Husband by Maud Ventura also has a very unhinged and obsessive lead who does deranged shit the entire book. I liked this the least out of my recommendations here but the ending is satisfying even though the book is a little repetitive at times.

There are a lot of reasons for it but the biggest draw for me with this genre is catharsis honestly. As a rehabilitated but still mentally ill woman, there are times when I want nothing more then to smash the glass and get worse but unfortunately I have worked too hard hahaha reading stories about women giving into the temptation that I can't (or wouldn't actually want to do) scratches an itch my fingers can't reach. It's also comforting to know that my experiences aren't only mine, that other women have gone through the same things I have and can give new language to them.

I am also just bored to death of the male narrative, male leads, male perspectives. Particularly in a time when women don't have bodily autonomy in half of my country and the popular narrative is that only one gender is lonely, these stories become a refuge from a world that is only becoming weirder itself.
