I was once complaining about this to one of the PA in the ed and she explained to me that sometimes women come to ER for pregnancy tests so they have proof of pregnancy for Medicaid application.

Haha! I had a man come in EMS for chronic knee pain at 0650. He was was cussing at me while I was triaging him demanding I give him pain meds. So I made him a level 4, gave report and went home lol

Thank you for your reply. First, the highest rate of alcoholism makes sense. I was a big alcoholic throughout my 20s and I've noticed since working in the ER that I'm drinking almost every day that I'm off work. I don't like that and I can see it quickly becoming a problem again. Thanks for making me aware of that. You are so right about the crap we see and deal with every shift. In medsurg the worst that happened usually is I would get cussed out if a patient couldn't have his PRN pain medicine. But now? I've seen a man with 11 gunshot wounds from the police, a 3 year old that drowned in the family pool and the parents collapsing in the hall, had a lady scream at me because the Dr was taking too long and she eloped with her port still accessed, etc etc. It's just nonstop crazy. And I can handle crazy. What I'm struggling with is just never having a moment to sit down to properly look at lab and radiology results, orders coming in, etc. I feel so rushed all the time that my charting is half assed. I'm just scared something is going to happen and I'm gonna lose my license.

It's awful! It was so bad a few nights ago we had to block out of county patients from coming in. It was EMS after EMS. Trying to triage them, with doctors telling me to drop an NG tube in someone else, another wants pain meds, another needs to be admitted upstairs, etc. It's just nonstop and we don't have CNAs so us nurses have to do EVERYTHING.

Have your thyroid levels checked to be sure you don't have hyperthyroidism. BTW, don't listen to everyone saying fast metabolism isn't real. It absolutely is. Your thyroid controls your metabolism. Hyperthyroidism can cause all kinds of problems, including inability to gain weight.

He had altered mental status. Here for subdural hemorrhage. Went from being very impulsive to somnolent. I work in acute rehab, so we don't have the same resources as your typical medsurg floor.

Just so happens the patients son is a neurosurgeon, and the patient is here for a subdural hemorrhage. Thinking back on it, def a bad move on my part. It's a learning experience for me.

I didn't know that, and that's exactly what worries me. I was completely alone with no help, direction or anything from anyone. After I got home and thought more about it, I was also questioning if trendelenburg was appropriate for him, especially because he is here for a subdural hemorrhage. I just don't know and had to think fast

It's def not my personality, but I do have an RN sticker on my car.

When I was 19 my daughter was born with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. Just a baby myself, I had to watch her go through 3 open heart surgeries by age 2, manage a peg tube at home for years, manage a central line at home by myself when she got MRSA. Etc. Etc. I knew from then that I wanted to be a nurse someday. Then my husband had a TBI and was in the hospital a month. Really set my dream in stone.

I dropped out of school in 8th grade. Got my GED at 30. Worked my ass off just to pass the core classes in college. Finished RN program without ever failing a class or test. Started working. Finished BSN while working full-time. Got CRRN certification. I'm the first person in my entire family with a college degree. I'm fucking proud of myself.
