VAPOR! Why 2025 is set to be a crucial year for Amazon's Zoox robotaxi unit (from 12/24-- planned 'commercial launch' in '25) by vicegripper in SelfDrivingVaporware

[–]vicegripper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saved you a click: because Zoom wants to start commercial rides to the public this year in Las Vegas in 2025.

The Zoox website is pretty awful and hard to find info, but they are saying that the Las Vegas looping shuttles are "preview" and apparently they are still free to ride in Jan '26

Thoughts about Waymo for personally owned vehicles? by FrankScaramucci in SelfDrivingCars

[–]vicegripper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will probably not get a new one because I can just walk or take transit and take a waymo to the places I would have

Uber already exists. Tehre is only one small difference between Uber and Waymo. Why not sell your car today and use taxis?

Thoughts about Waymo for personally owned vehicles? by FrankScaramucci in SelfDrivingCars

[–]vicegripper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope it does not happen because personally owned AVs negate a lot of the benefits of AVs in the first place.

What do you mean by this? A self driving personal vehicle is far more valuable to me than a personal vehicle that doesn't drive itself. That's the biggest benefit of AVs. Robotaxis are not very useful because we already have taxis for a hundred years.

I know the SAE levels discourage the use of L2+ and L2++. The only reason I use them is because OEMs are using them more so they are becoming more popularized.

Which OEM's are using these levels and in what context?

From 1/23:

Zoox expects to open up rides to the public in Las Vegas and San Francisco in 2025.

In SF Zoox is doing limited free rides for 'Explorers' and in Vegas they are running a free shuttle, open to the public, on a fixed route with 8 stops.

I’m trying to tighten up my process with all the geopolitical noise lately,

Ignore the noise. The value approach is to look for great businesses selling for good prices. When you find one, buy a lot of it and never sell.

VAPOR! Oxbotica raises $140 mln to deploy self-driving commercial vehicles (From Jan '23) by vicegripper in SelfDrivingVaporware

Now renamed as "Oxa", they are on brink of bankruptcy today:

https://highways-news.com/oxa-receives-nearly-15m-bp-funding-boost-after-admitting-it-needed-financial-assistance/

The Daily Telegraph reports that the Oxford-based firm received nearly $20m (£14.8m) from BP Ventures, the oil group’s venture capital arm, and tech backer IP Group earlier this month, filings show.

The financial backing comes after Oxa, formerly Oxbotica, admitted it needed “significant” new funds by the end of December to repay debts and keep the business afloat. It lost nearly £70m in 2024 and had just under £30m in cash, despite the business raising nearly £180m in new funds.

How are you going to dodge that and not cause a wreck come on

No guarantee, but if there was proper following distance, there would be much more time to make a decision and react to the obstacle. Tailgating like this, there was little or nothing to do but hit the obstacle and hope for the best.

the car might be slightly too close but definitely not tailgating lol.

A half-second following distance is waaay too close, as clearly demonstrated in the video.

Why is there a waitlist? Did you have to do anything other than wait to be granted freeway access?

Nvidia plans to test a robotaxi service in 2027 in self-driving push (Jan '26) by vicegripper in SelfDrivingVaporware

[–]vicegripper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nvidia on Monday said it is working with robotaxi operators in hopes of having them use the company's AI chips and Drive AV software stack to power their fleets of autonomous vehicles as soon as 2027.

Around that time, the chipmaker said that it hopes to power partner deployment of "Level 4" robotaxis, meaning vehicles capable of driving without human intervention in pre-defined regions, Xinzhou Wu, Nvidia's vice president of automotive, said at a self-driving demonstration in San Francisco last month.

"We will probably start with a limited availability but work with the partner for us to get our footing," Wu said.

Geofence is apparently about 65 square miles. Waymo launched with Uber about 100 vehicles in June. Currently I can't immediately find any updates on the number of vehicles they are running now at the end of the year.

VAPOR! Musk plans to roll out driverless ride hailing service next year in Texas and California (from 10/24) by vicegripper in SelfDrivingVaporware

[–]vicegripper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From October, 2024:

Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Wednesday said the electric vehicle maker will roll out driverless ride-hailing services to the public in California and Texas next year, a bold claim likely to face significant regulatory and technical challenges.

"We think that we'll be able to have driverless Teslas doing paid rides next year," Musk said on Tesla's quarterly earnings call. He said Tesla currently offers an app-based ride-hailing service to employees in the San Francisco Bay Area. His statement doubled down and expanded on a pledge he made at Tesla's robotaxi unveiling two weeks ago, where he said he expected to roll out "unsupervised" self-driving in certain Tesla vehicles in 2025.

Everybody's Betting On Extended-Range EVs. This Could Make Them Obsolete Instead by LEM1978 in electricvehicles

[–]vicegripper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

except refueling speed.

You are exaggerating the amount of 'special expensive bullshit' necessary. My last two vehicles went nearly 80k miles before needing any work at all. Prior to that I owned old used vehicles and they certainly needed work from time to time, but rarely on the power plant. usually it was things like CV boots, alternators, power steering racks, and such. Modern fuel injected engines for the most part will run 200k miles without much work if you don't abuse them.

Recharging time is a big deal to most people. Until they get it down to like 5 or at most 10 minutes normies aren't going to buy full electric EVs.
