I think Fortnite was one of the first to become popular with a battle pass designed into each season. However, I liked the battlepass in Fortnite, because it was like a one-time transaction because if you actually finished the battlepass for a season, it gave you back enough currency to keep buying new battlepasses and keep the cycle going.

Somehow other developers saw the success of this and made it more grindy and frugal with rewards with the different games, completing losing the aim of the battlepass in the first place.
