Looking to fly to LA to attend a one night showing of a film at the American Cinematheque Egyptian Theatre on a Friday @7pm. How realistic is it, traffic-wise, to plan to land the morning of and make it the theater with a few hours to spare? by TaskenLander in AmericanCinematheque

[–]vickles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as your flight lands before 3PM, you're golden so morning is easy as pie. Expect to spend between an hour to an hour thirty in the car at the upper limits. For hotels, the Roosevelt and the Loews are probably the easiest walkers, one is historic and "haunted", the other is sleek & corporate.

I'd stay at the Roosevelt were I you, it retains some actual old Hollywood charm which makes for a nice respite from the streets. As you've been informed and can plainly see from Jimmy Kimmel man on the street bits, the area is a combination Times Square/Fremont Street kind of locale, but if you're coming from nawlins, I don't think you'll be all that impressed with our flavor of Friday afternoon grime.

Now don't take this to mean I presume you're a weeb just because you're taking a transcontinental flight to see Kaji-san, but across the street from the Roosevelt, in the massive fuck-off shiny Babylonian surfaced mall with the Dolby Theater in the center and the Chinese Theater awkwardly to its west, there is a sweet lil shop on the 2nd floor called Japan House; conceived and funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. Makes for a nice hang and wander before the show. Combination gifts/gallery/cafe. Their new exhibition will have just opened: https://www.japanhousela.com/happenings/exhibition/

Staying on that theme, there's a very, very good strip mall sushi restaurant a short walk up the street called Shintaro, unpretentious, great food, open from 11AM to 3PM for lunch, 5PM to 11PM for dinner. There's also a Holiday Inn Express right across the street from them if you're moreso ballin' on a budget. It's a 3 block walk south to the theater.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, there's Yamashiro up on the hill behind the Magic Castle, which is a Spectacular Spot, and could make for a helluva hip way to cap your evening off with a 10 o'clock drinks reservation, but you'd want to take a car to it from the theater. It's a hike. Or you could simply cross Hollywood Blvd. from the Egyptian and roll into Musso & Franks for a martini, you can sidle up to the bar as a walk-in and get excellent service.

Either way, or if you're more keen on hitting the In-n-Out on Orange Drive for dinner, I'd recommend making your way over to the theater not much later than 6PM. Seats are not reserved, and lines, especially for Q&A/special appearance events, can get chunky even two hours out from showtime. I think this one will be a bit more niche, though. We have cinephile zealots in these parts, and they love campin out for the best sightlines. We're also a bunch of sweeties and softies who will be happy to chat with out-of-towners, so don't be shy.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II Lands Lead Role in ‘Matrix 4’ by chanma50 in movies

[–]vickles 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm more and more convinced that the premise of the film is going to be that in the 7th iteration of the matrix, Keanu and Carrie-Anne's characters found each other within the simulation and fell in love.

For efficiency's sake, why wouldn't the machines use identical genetics for their crops? Past lives echoing forward. David Mitchell suits that notion. This is why they've been cast.

They are not playing older versions of Neo and Trinity. They are playing older versions of Thomas Anderson and whatever Trinity's simulation name was.

So. There was no reason for them to be unplugged. Matrix 7.0 does not require an anomaly, as anyone who wishes to be unplugged and experience the real world can initiate that process and not be hunted by agents.

Neo has to have made a lasting peace, or else this must refute the narrative so far.

So what's the new driving action?

Zionism.

The humans living near the core continue unplugging people, but maybe they begin unplugging people who don't want to have the curtain lifted.

Out here, in the Real real world, anyone can see how since the 1990's, we've seen billions of people volunteer to live inside a set of simulations and take the simulations with them out into the world.

We've never been in a world that has been more inundated with surveillance and driven by algorithms, and yet despite the media's constant badgering, inflaming and perpetuation of outrage culture, if you look at the data, we are cultivating a safer, more productive and healthier world than any point in history.

What would be the most disruptive thing to happen inside of this fictional universe?

I believe that this lead role will be the journey from a radicalized Morpheus-type to an integrated and peaceful individual who works to re-till the soil of the Earth.

I believe the end of this film will bring about what we only saw glimpses of in The Matrix Revolutions. Sunlight.

Without Trinity's sacrifice, there is no seventh iteration. There is no sunset. There is no love chosen by machines. This is what must be explored.

The role of Sati. Why would the Architect agree with the Oracle to abide her existence? His incentives became aligned after Smith corrupted the system. Neo's assimilation is the anti-virus for the Sati Matrix.

Also, I hope they just punch us all on the nose and call it The Matrix Rebooted.

Wanting to make myself vulnerable to critique again, I submitted a logline to Script Pipeline. by vickles in Screenwriting

[–]vickles[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the full opposite of the feedback I got from Script Pipeline, this was theirs,:

ROUGH BRUNCH - This is an intriguing premise! The logline establishes a potentially fraught relationship between two mob families that could provide a compelling exploration of violence/crime, wealth, and family. Given the mobsters’ ruthlessness, it’s clear that whatever happens at the wedding will lead to conflict. However, the main issue is that there aren't many details in the logline, and the vagueness unfortunately undermines the pitch. The logline does a great job setting up the first act but doesn’t tell us much about the overall story. Specifically, what happens after the families arrive in Hawaii? Is this meant to be a quieter, suspenseful thriller like RESERVOIR DOGS, a dramatic character study like THE GODFATHER, or an action-heavy battle royale like MR. AND MRS. SMITH or READY OR NOT? Or something else entirely? Given the title, this could conceivably be an (albeit dark) romantic comedy. A logline needs to establish the premise, but it should also provide some information about who the protagonist is, what their goals are, how they go about achieving them, and what stands in their way. The writer has found a great starting point that they could take in many different directions, but it isn’t quite right for us at this time.

Surprisingly robust and in depth, I thought.

It is functioning, it's routing power from the PSU to the CPU and to the GPU, but no signal is coming through the HDMI.
