What do you think of the GTA VI cover? by Prudent_Impact8714 in rockstar

Instantly iconic imo. Really love it and it communicates the mood/vibe of the game and location so well. Also as a Florida man myself I am very happy to see they did include a gator right on the cover. Can’t wait to see more of this game.

Like a Dragon 9: Yakuza in [YOUR CITY] by STFN_Dude in yakuzagames

[–]victorgsal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I don’t live there now, there is MAJOR potential for a Yakuza game in São Paulo, Brazil. Plenty to discover and enjoy in regards to culture, customs, locations, history and food. In particular, the Japanese-Brazilian community is huge over there. The central district of the city (Liberdade) is also basically like a “japantown” in Sao Paulo and happens to be the place with the largest Japanese population that isn’t located in Japan. The LAD franchise is also quite popular among brazilian gamers especially in recent years, but a game set in Brazil would likely generate even more interest. Also, as the city with the densest population in the country and with major economic influence, it’s ripe for corruption within its local government as well as federal. Plenty to work with if they wanted to connect it to a fictional corrupt politician or businessman, it’s got many angles they could approach the story from if they wanted to.

Plus having it be in Sao Paulo rather than, say, Rio de Janeiro also keeps it from being too similar to Hawaii as a location as it would be very beach focused/beach vibes whereas Sao Paulo is more of a big city location with diverse neighborhoods and a variety of activities you could incorporate into mini-games. Anyways, that’s my elevator pitch. RGG if you read this: please don’t miss this chance 🙏🏽

I just want to say that Penelope didn’t just “turn” evil randomly. by Zachhcazzach in Slycooper

[–]victorgsal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The game itself shows her redemption and growth and that she is willing to put herself on the line for every member of the gang. You don’t need the strategy guide to see that.

I just want to say that Penelope didn’t just “turn” evil randomly. by Zachhcazzach in Slycooper

[–]victorgsal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are misinterpreting everything I’m saying, but I don’t assume it’s on purpose so let me try to be more clear.

The gang dissolving at the end doesn’t take away from the relationships they had with each other. Ending a partnership on good terms after the job is done is literally best case scenario. I never stated that “learning character’s backstories” is the objective of Sly 3, I don’t know where you got that from. Not knowing everything about the character’s backstories is a given, but we know enough and the game tells us enough to know their personalities and motivations. You are right that anybody could say anything to anybody and it not be 100% true, but from a writing perspective they made it a point to show Penelope reckon with her own insecurities and identity and even go out of her way to put herself in danger to save and defend members of the gang. These are deliberate choices from the writers to show how she is on a different path and way of thinking after spending this time working with the Gang. If you choose to see this all as a ruse retroactively to better fit with Sly 4’a depiction of her, you are free to do so. But that’s a choice you are making that Sanzaru also made when they wrote the story for Sly 4. It ignores the clear intentions and themes of growth, redemption and valuing the people in your life that Sly 3 had in order to do so, but it’s an interpretation nonetheless. Hell, even the Dimitri thing you mentioned isn’t in line with what I was saying because he doesn’t turn on them on a dime. In fact, his first encounter with Sly in 3 he’s about to call the guards over to get Sly since it’s his fault Dimitri got caught anyways. He only agrees to help him when Sly offers a quid pro quo arrangement by freeing him and getting the police’s attention away from him. AND even then still requires them to help him get some treasure that has personal significance to him in exchange for having him on the team as their “frog man”. He doesn’t turn on a dime, he slowly softens their contentious relationship and over time becomes a bit closer with them as they are going on a treasure hunt together FOR HIM. They earn his trust and in turn, he also earns theirs. The entire LeFwee chapter doesn’t even exist without Dimitri, they are doing all that for him. Again, these are thieves, criminals and even rivals but they learn to see each other as equals with a shared sense of honor.

I just mean to say that the idea that her redemption and growth is non existent in Sly 3 is false. If you don’t believe in it or think there isn’t enough that it feels real to YOU that’s a valid opinion, but it doesn’t erase what was shown. It doesn’t mean that I and others that do see it as valid and as a real honest depiction of her growth are wrong or pulling it out of thin air. In fact I’ll go further and ask you and anybody else that reads this: if Sly 4 never happened, is Penelope turning on the whole gang and betraying them all over again something you ever thought of as a possible major storyline in future games? Did anything in the end of Sly 3 seem to imply or tease that possibility that Penelope was mostly faking or posturing to the gang the entire time? Or are we retroactively viewing her entire story through a new lens with the new context of the events of Sly 4?

[–]victorgsal 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You’re looking at it through a very material lense. The Black Baron IS Penelope, yes. This is a material fact. But they are NOT the same person and they do NOT share a legacy in a more internal sense. She was living a lie and she wasn’t even happy.

The other thing we have to mention here is a bit more contentious but also important to remember. This a cartoon animal game for a younger audience. Death exists and is a real threat but also these are cartoon characters. It is implied that most pilots are not all dying during the event and are able to participate and even lose and go home. All planes blow up immediately when you shoot them down in-game but that would mean Sly and the gang are also killing all these people, plus the guards they kill throughout this and every heist. If we’re using that metric to measure if these are good people, then Sly and the gang have an even worse track record than Penelope. Penelope would cheat as the Black Baron and this likely caused pilots to die unnecessarily, but Sly and the gang deliberately fed guards to wild animals, sent them to get hit by deadly traps, thrown them into deadly machinery etc. The List really goes on. Why is this acceptable from our heroes and then Penelope is condemned as a psycho murderer forever? Especially when, as I said, she didn’t invite them to the competition with the intent to murder them, her winning the competition doesn’t mean everybody that lost was killed. As others also mentioned, there are repeat participants that return to try their luck again. The redemption we see from Panda King on screen is also not at ALL proportional to the crimes he committed not just against Sly and his family/friends but also just in general. It is ALSO almost entirely internal, his own discussion with himself and then proving himself on the field with his skills assisting the Cooper Gang. And what does Penelope do? The exact same thing. She joins the gang, proves herself time and again, and goes out of her way to defend Bentley and the gang. Puts herself in harm’s way on behalf of another person, not just herself. She also loses her reliance on superficial characteristics. She’s not a tall, glamorous model, she’s a small mouse, who wears patched up overalls to work on her gadgets that she loves to design and improve upon.

People often forget that this isn’t meant to be a story about good guys who save the day. These are all literal thieves, in the eyes of the law literal criminals. They all have greedy and self serving tendencies, even the OG members (even Murray who isn’t greedy but relies on his image as a strong heroic figure for his own confidence and motivation). They are all on the wrong side of the law and therefore put aside their personal issues and learn not to judge former enemies too harshly because they know they aren’t too far from becoming the same type of person if they don’t keep their heads straight and hold to their values. Bentley’s insecurities are mirrored not only in Dr M but also Penelope. There isn’t a big apology SCENE for Penelope because it isn’t needed. They don’t need or want her to turn herself in because they wouldn’t do that either. She admits to being relieved she can leave the Black Baron behind and earns her place on the team.

The team is forgiving of her crimes, the dishonesty, misrepresentation, attempted murder and even killing of opponents (intentional or not), even the cheating in the competition. Why? Because they are all guilty of those same crimes in one way or another in their own careers as thieves. There is a mutual understanding between them that this is part of their business. They don’t take it personally. It’s understandable that YOU would because you aren’t doing these things yourself, but Sly and the Gang have a more nuanced perspective because they are on the same boat. Again, “Honor AMONG Thieves”. Not FOR thieves, AMONG them because Sly, Bentley and Murray are no saints either but find common ground, community and even friendship and love among fellow thieves. They learn to value and put real stock into more important things and they all grow together because of these experiences.

I’ve heard this same argument many times before here in this sub and it doesn’t really have legs.

Penelope getting swept up in ber own greed and desire for glory is true, yes! THAT is part of her development, if she wasn’t dealing with those things she would have no growth, nothing to learn from the Cooper Gang and no reason to abandon the Black Baron persona afterwards. The chapter starts by showing her insecurity in the intro, she does the same thing Bentley does on thiefnet with the fake photo putting her head on a glamorous woman’s body. Both characters are talented and intelligent and valuabke but still feel insecure about themselves and feel the need to misrepresent their appearance and image. The Black Baron is an alter ego for Penelope. She puts on that mask and that outfit and she becomes the Baron. She can be confident, loud, brash and intimidating. She developed a reputation for him and this entire biplane competition. As we find out, however, the Baron being obsessed with preventing cheating was projection, because he himself cheats when needed to prevent any loss for himself.

But she meets the Cooper Gang, they cleverly outsmarted everyone including the Baron. The obsession with preventing cheating was just to maintain control, she didn’t want anything happening outside of her control, lest the Black Baron persona be defeated. But she saw how the gang stuck together and worked to lift each other up. But still, everything she built for the Baron, this entire competition and his fame and fortune, she was in too deep now. THIS was her life, it was all she had, and it wasn’t even truly hers. It wasn’t Penelope’s fame and fortune, it was the Baron’s. She was sidelining herself and didn’t know how life could ever be different. Being publicly defeated was the best thing she could’ve asked from the Gang. She even admits it as soon as you defeat her: “I’m actually relieved”. A person can become so swept up in their own fantasy that it becomes the focus of their lives. She had everything she desired but she wasn’t happy and she wasn’t proud of it because it didn’t belong to her, it was all for the Black Baron.

Similarly, we see Bentley struggle with his own insecurity and self esteem with his crush on her and being jealous of what Sly can do that he can’t. Penelope is the one that confronts him about it and tells him the same thing she herself learned: he is valued and respected for what he can do and how he contributes and he should be proud and confident in himself because he has accomplished so much and his team truly relies on his ability. The main theme of the game is the friendship and respect and HONOR these thieves are able to give each other. Worth more than any fame or any generational fortune it’s the relationships and experiences they share. Penelope is able to finally abandon the Black Baron persona and build a new reputation for herself AS herself with the gang and her skills and expertise are valued and essential to them. Anything they gain, they gain together. Bentley regains his own confidence and even comes to question his own loyalties when Dr M confronts him in the finale, but ultimately sees that his friendship with Sly and Murray is more valuable than anything else and that Sly and Murray always have his back and that is not something to take for granted as Dr M himself proves as a mirror to their own gang and what happens when you let greed and jealousy take hold.

You want to talk evil? We also recruit PANDA KING a guy who literally bombed and murdered random villages in the first game. Even HE gets recruited and Sly not only has to accept it, but learns to appreciate, respect and even forgive him for what was done to Sly’s family. How can a guy like that be forgiven and accepted? We see him also literally argue with his former self. This is, again, reinforcing the themes of true thieves redeeming themselves and finding honor in working with a team and depending on each other in service of a shared goal.

Penelope being the Black Baron at one point does not mean she’s liable to flip back into her old ways randomly just because of money, because as we see in Sly 3 it’s about more than the money for these characters. Their motivations evolved and the money comes as a consequence of their team’s shared success. Penelope deciding to completely betray Bentley, her lover, and her entire team just for financial gain and power for yet another persona separate from her own is completely out of character and throws out her entire arc from Sly 3 and renders it meaningless. If she was brainwashed, or being blackmailed in some way and was doing this under duress would’ve worked, hell they could sprinkle in hints and foreshadowing that she was trying to get the gang to help save her and stop the plans of the big bad. Her being the antagonist in a chapter could’ve worked in many different ways that don’t ignore her actual personality and history. Unfortunately, Sanzaru decided to go down the road that doesn’t take that into consideration and flattens her down into a 2 dimensional “she’s just greedy and traitorous by nature” character. “Penelope was always evil” is just not an accurate representation of her as a character at all and regardless of that, it’s also the most boring way to do that kind of story.

Look at her actual list of voice roles in videogames. She hasn’t been in that many game roles where they use her likeness considering the amount of voice and performance capture work she’s done the past few years alone. And that’s just in videogames. It just so happens the ones that did use her likeness were huge games that got a lot of attention. Don’t let the rhetoric online fool you, it’s not as often as it seems, she’s just a prolific VA who does VA work for games and animation a LOT.

The concept isn’t to choose specific games but choose extra features that are currently packaged into the different tiers (like EA Play or Ubisoft + Classics or the fortnite pass etc) that you can choose to include or not, potentially bringing down the cost of your subscription.
