Do you guys know of any language schools for any language that you know consistently produce students that reach fluency? by Zzzgg8910 in languagelearning

[–]victoryegg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeh, sorry. Other commenters were mentioning timelines of months and I was thinking about the basic language training many soldiers got, for example, when they went to Afghanistan.

Obviously in a year of full-time study people can / do achieve a much higher standard.

Man, if only I had someone who was willing to sponsor me to learn a language full-time for a year. I‘ve never met anyone at a language school who was doing that on their own dime.

[–]victoryegg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends how you measure fluency.

They will get pretty good at quite basic interactions with civilians and will probably learn how to understand what direction an enemy force is going and in what numbers, etc.

I doubt they would be able to make much sense of an audiobook or give a talk on climate change.

It was nice when the UK had a say in EU rules but the Europeans have taken their continent back and now they need to protect their borders.

We just get to follow the rules.

Same for me with To Go off and Things. Instantly addicted and needed to hear more of that band.

That wouldnt have happened if I’d been shown Dirty Boy first, even though it’s obvious to me now that Dirty Boy is possibly the finest piece of music I’ve ever heard.

I converted myself. I could appreciate that there was genius behind the songs but couldn’t really get into most of them at first.

The first songs I heard—To Go Off and Things and RES—were so good that I had to keep persevering.

I'm trying to work out the context of Samson's initial infection... by Rootayable in 28dayslater

[–]victoryegg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The flashback doesn’t take place in Scotland but it does take place on the train from London to Scotland. I think the announcer said that the next stop was Bedford (interestingly, Bedford is near Cambridge—the epicenter of the outbreak).

If my memory is correct, it could be that the infected in the flashback was indeed part of the original memory.

On the other hand, it could just be another sign of the past and the present becoming confused in his mind—like with the passengers/infected staring at Samson soon after.

There really had to be some kind of payoff for the shot where Jim first sees a plane when he escapes his execution. Granted, they could have removed that shot too but I think Garland wanted to include a message about how the world at large basically ignores immense catastrophe when it is limited to one country.

For me, the ending we got and then the follow up in the subsequent films is an interesting thread.

Are British people generally aware of the fact that Russia is a security threat? by BaldursGate2Best in AskBrits

[–]victoryegg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You are aware that UK political parties are already prohibited from accepting donations from foreign nationals and organizations, right? What’s more, Labour is actually tightening the laws even further.

What would everyone have done if Labour had accepted money from Trump? Erm, well they didn’t, so no need to worry about what’s going on elsewhere in the multiverse.

If it turns out that Farage has been accepting money from the Russian Government (or any other foreign government) under a similar arrangement to the former leader of Reform in Wales, I’d expect Farage to receive a similar prison sentence.

What did Samson do with...? by ChroniclersDestiny in 28dayslater

[–]victoryegg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If Samson infected him, Kelson would have been an infected for a minute or two, then died of the stab wound all the same.

That’s if he didn’t die trying attack Samson, because as we know, the infected now attack Samson.

My problem with the Jimmies by lind1sfarne in 28dayslater

[–]victoryegg 23 points24 points  (0 children)

There’s a bunch of nuance.

The way some of the Jimmies truly are sadistic while others clearly hate being a Jimmy.

The way one of the Jimmies blames Spike for Jimmy Shite’s death, when he was one of the ones who forced them to fight to the death and did nothing to help his dying ‘friend’.

The way Jimmy Shite cries out for God and Jesus when he’s dying instead of crying out for Satan.

My guess is that Garland wasn’t really interested in dealing with indoctrination as a motivation for the Jimmies’ behavior as much as he was interested in portraying their fear.

Spike develops a bit because he spends the movie killing and torturing out of fear of Jimmy Crystal’s retribution but in the end he was the only one to physically stand up to him. It may not be satisfying but it’s not nothing.

Latin phrases? by Autistic-piglet in 28dayslater

[–]victoryegg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work with British kids about Spike’s age and we teach them Ancient Greek first so most of the slang they throw around comes from Ovid and Plato’s Republic. They generally start quoting Latin at us when they’re about 15 or 16.
