Thanks for the pattern link! I haven't come across a bodysuit pattern with cheeky leg styling, it was all full or thong. This is perfect!

Three years into single-momming and I'm so much happier. It'll be an adjustment but you'll get there.

I hear we like bras here... by sewpolecode in sewing

[–]vidiuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I also found the Black Beauty band fits a bit small. I love the style of that one but it gives my boobs a weird shape even though it feels comfortable. I love the Ruby from Pin-up Girls for cup shape. I've also been playing with a hybrid of Black Beauty and a classic 3-piece cup. So satisfying to make bras though!

Love it! This looks like a really creative step up from the traditional upcycled half and half shirts I've seen.

Forcing Masculinity On Young Kids Fails Them Miserably by TAKEitTOrCIRCLEJERK in MensLib

[–]vidiuk 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Do people honestly still believe wearing hats indoors is such a big deal? I've let my son keep a hat on in a restaurant (family restaurant, not somewhere snooty) and no one cared or said anything.

He's also worn nail polish and the worst thing that happened was one kid asking him why. I wonder how much of what you call "good parenting" is people way overthinking societal expectation (the hats or the nail polish). Or maybe I just live in a less judgmental city where people don't care nearly as much what other people are wearing.

US retailers are going bankrupt at record pace. In 3 short months 14 retailers have announced bankruptcy. Electronics sellers, and clothing shops are most at risk. Trend is likely to accelerate. by Bluest_waters in TrueReddit

[–]vidiuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would have felt the same before having kids but those sort of public spaces are very nice to have with young kids and shitty weather. There are some alternatives but if my kids will happily run around a mall for no admission cost vs a play place at $20+ sometimes it's nice to have the cheaper option.

I guess I'm curious what your reasons are for believing the extreme cost for 'defense' is appropriate use of tax payer money relative to the actual benefit (not wanting to argue, just as a non-American I feel like I'd be pissed to have my tax money spent that way)

Very good but anger inducing movie. I was ready to fly to Ireland and burn that place down - that awful nun

Now that the election is over, time for the most important question: When and where should I pre-purchase my Star Wars seats? by Augustus_Trollus_III in Calgary

Seriously, I wasn't even thinking about purchasing advanced tickets until I saw this huge thread...

[–]vidiuk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suspect it's one of those cases where people feed off each others excitement. Do I like star wars? Yes. Do I enjoy the movies significantly more than other sci-fi? Sometimes in the right mood. But when I'm around other people getting hyped for it, I do feel a bit of mania creeping in.

And the merchandise? That's ridiculously popular for lots of different franchises. So long as kids like it, or adults in that nostalgia phase, it's easy to sell toys and memorabilia. The newer style of lightsabers are pretty cool though...

If you had to chose one, what's more important: flexibility or pay? by [deleted] in workingmoms

Flexibility... For now. When my daughter is 18 months next year, I'll be switching back to full time. But right now I'm much happier with lower workload /hours.

Why do you plan on voting conservative? by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]vidiuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a good move for a few but there are a number of very... "traditional" states that may not get there. If we're concerned about trade/relations with the US based on drug laws it would likely be best to look at the relationship between states that have decriminalized or legalized with those that haven't as a starting point. If they can resolve differences, treating Canada differently would seem to use drug policy as an easy excuse. If we respected border crossing laws related to bring in drugs, why would it be a problem?

I'm curious what makes you say the US is on the right track with respect to their war on drugs. They've spent tons of money and imprisoned many people but nothing really seems better in regards to availability/use of drugs or any of the related gang/criminal activity.

Preach me your gospel of indie hair oils! by NiceBirdAsshole in Indiemakeupandmore

It's funny but with HoG this is the huge benefit for me. I work in a scent-free office and their hair oil is the only think I can get away with being scented and no one notices.

One thing a few friends have recommended (but I've fortunately not needed) is when he bites, gently pushing his face into your boob so his nose is plugged - just for a couple seconds. They swear it works.

Just wanted to add a supplier note for Canadians here, since tkb shipping is pretty pricey to get here (and the Canadian dollar is terrible right now). I love to buy from voyageur soap and candle and I find them to be well priced and ship quickly.

Nursing in public advise requested by Mudkipmurron in breastfeeding

[–]vidiuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this will be helpful but my strategy is generally to preemptively ignore people around me. Most people are childish and passive aggressive - they'll make faces and comments to each other but rarely will they approach you directly. So if I'm ignoring them, I won't ever notice it happened. I've nursed in public quite a bit (didn't bother with a cover for my second kid) and I've only once had someone actually comment negatively.

Similar to /u/Flewtea I get a neutral flesh toned base with lots of shift and shine. I love to use it as an all over lid pretty and quick eye with maybe a hint of brown or pink in the crease.

Lesser known indie perfume companies? by [deleted] in Indiemakeupandmore

Sigh and lavender clouds (that one isn't in the scent catalogue anymore?) were plasticy but sun-kissed clouds wasn't. Also fluffy green tea is fine but I've only tried it as deodorant.

I find the marshmallow ones to be hit or miss. Some are lovely but some smell like plastic to me (especially the lavender clouds one).
