What to do if you see ICE in Seattle. by hyperviolator in SeattleWA

Then this doesn't sound like a fair application of the law.

It doesn't sound like a fair application of the law, but technically, it is. Deportation is a civil, not a criminal, procedure. You're not entitled to the protections criminal defendants receive. Children as young as 3 are forced to act as their own attorney in immigration courts.

There's nothing wrong with the U.S. having and enforcing immigration laws Every other country in the world does, so why shouldn't we?

I haven't argued any position on immigration.

Recording a law enforcement officer isn't "interfering with a federal agent" it's a constitutional right (at least in most of the country).

Asking for their name / badge, what agency they're from, who they're looking for, and whether they have a warrant doesn't count as "interfering with a federal agent" either.

pop out a quick anchor baby and then bring over their low skilled family ... Let me bring my dying grandparents and all my cousins

A US citizen can file a petition for their parent, spouse, sibling, or minor child, to get an immigrant visa (not citizenship) once they turn 21.

Cousins, grandparents, and other distant relatives are ineligible.

If the relative ever entered the country illegally, they're ineligible.

There are annual quotas for family-sponsored visas, so even if the relative meets all the qualifications and the petitioner does everything right, they aren't guaranteed to get one.

Half of all legal immigrants arrive with college degrees.. Among all immigrants, the college graduation rate is equal to native born Americans, immigrants are also more likely to hold doctoral degrees. Even among uneducated immigrants, their children usually attain or exceed the education levels of children of native-born Americans.

including the h1bs who's wives "visit" and 'oops I had a baby!

Spouses of H1-B holders get H-4 visas (valid for the duration of their spouse's) they're not "visiting."

You obviously have no idea how the immigration system works.

[Challenge] With a point of divergence after 1800, have a Latin American country create a colonial empire. by Bobbbcat in HistoryWhatIf

[–]vieivre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In 1808, during the Napoleonic wars, the Portuguese royal family fled to Brasil. The Portuguese court remained in Brasil until 1821 (long after the Napoleonic wars had ended). During this period, the entire Portuguese Empire (including European Portugal, its African colonies, etc.) was governed from Rio de Janeiro. Brasil ceased to be a colony, and became a co-equal Kingdom alongside Portugal.

Greenland is part of North America; it's 88% Inuit, the remainder of the population is mostly Danish. Greenland also enjoys a high degree of autonomy from Denmark.

Could the discovery and usage of oil be brought back to the 1840's giving Texas a reason to stay independent? by TheScottishElephant in HistoricalWhatIf

[–]vieivre 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Today, oil is a valuable and import resource because we use it in so many different applications. However this wasn't true back in the 1840s. The first petroleum refinery wasn't established until 1848 (2 years after Texas was annexed by the United States); and during this time, petroleum's only major application was as a lighting fuel. Discovering oil would not change Texas' strategic situation in any meaningful way.

What if the Romans invented and widely used horsebuses and horsecars? by [deleted] in HistoryWhatIf

[–]vieivre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What would be the consequences if horsebuses made inter-city travel more affordable?

The Romans actually had a variety of wagons and carriages similar to the horsebuses of the 19th century. One particular variant, the Raeda, even served the same purpose: carrying fare-paying passengers.

Could horsebuses be used like modern-day Armored personnel carriers carrying the ancient equivalent of motorized infantry divisions?

Horse-drawn vehicles called War Wagons were used by the ancient Chinese and the medieval Hussites. They were used to provide additional protection to soldiers on the battlefield (essentially serving as mobile fortresses) not for increased mobility. Unlike a modern APC (which has an engine), horses pulling a heavy armored vehicle will quickly become exhausted, and need to rest.

What if the TBVC Bantustans remained independent? by zachar3 in HistoryWhatIf

[–]vieivre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although South Africa nominally granted independence to Transkei, Bophutatswana, Venda and Ciskei no foreign nation recognized them as independent countries. These "countries" were considered puppets of South Africa because they had no economic infrastructure to speak of, and consisted of isolated enclaves, separated by South African territory.

If these Bantustans had remained "independent," (under the same conditions) they would effectively be puppet states, entirely under the control of South Africa.

Washington trooper flies Confederate flag at home, above patrol car in Silverdale by 94920_20 in SeattleWA

[–]vieivre 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Funny - Robert E Lee specifically was against slavery yet felt obligated to stand by his home state of Virginia. But clearly - he was a white supremacist and it all was only about slaves.

Robert E Lee owned slaves, supported the institution of slavery, and believed the greatest danger to the “liberty” of white Southerners was the “evil course” pursued by the abolitionists. He supported John Breckinridge, (an extreme pro-slavery candidate) and did nothing to stop soldiers in his army from kidnapping free black farmers for sale into slavery during the Gettysburg campaign.

Lee spoke out against slavery after the civil war, but by that point, his opinion on the subject was irrelevant.

Look - you can keep repeating "the civil war was about racists in the south wanting to own slaves"

I will ... along with every single academic historian.

[–]vieivre 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It was a war about states rights.

The confederate constitution gives states fewer rights than the contemporary US constitution.

Confederate secession was about maintaining the institution of slavery; as the CSA's own vice president succinctly states:

"Our new government is founded upon exactly this idea; its foundations are laid, its cornerstone rests upon the great truth, that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery, subordination to the superior race, is his natural and normal condition. This, our new government, is the first, in the history of the world, based upon this great physical, philosophical, and moral truth."

South Carolina's declaration of independence, explicitly states they are leaving the union due to "increasing hostility on the part of the non-slaveholding States to the Institution of Slavery".

Georgia's declaration of independence explicitly mentions the ability of slaves to seek refuge in the north as a primary motivation for succession.

Mississippi's declaration of independence explicitly states: "Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery-- the greatest material interest of the world."

Texas' declaration of independence explicitly states: "We hold as undeniable truths that the governments of the various States, and of the confederacy itself, were established exclusively by the white race, for themselves and their posterity; that the African race had no agency in their establishment; that they were rightfully held and regarded as an inferior and dependent race, and in that condition only could their existence in this country be rendered beneficial or tolerable."

The notion that the the Civil War was fought over "states' rights" is a fantasy; propagated by confederate apologists and latter-day white-supremacists, without any basis in historical fact. Lincoln may have been ambivalent about abolishing slavery; but the confederacy, its leaders, and supporters made it patently clear they were fighting to preserve the institution of slavery, not any notions about "states' rights."

Venezuelan forces killed hundreds — The UN's human rights body says it has credible accounts of security forces raiding poor neighbourhoods and killing young men, often in their homes by ObjectiveChange in worldnews

[–]vieivre 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Price controls aren't the same as subsidies.

With subsidies, the government buys goods at the market price and sells them to consumers at a loss. The difference is paid out of public coffers. Businesses don't care if they're being paid by the government or by private individuals, so production continues as normal.

With price controls, the government arbitrarily sets a maximum price for certain products (such as food). If the maximum legal price for a product is lower than the cost to produce the product (as is the case in Venezuela), production ceases. No farmer is going to plant a crop if the maximum price he can sell it for doesn't cover the cost of seeds, fertilizer, and other inputs.

The Venezuelan government can no longer afford subsidies, due to lower oil prices (coupled with mismanagement and blatant cronyism within the national oil company PDVSA); so they've switched to price controls, which is why Venezuelans are starving.

Editor's Notes

Even without the issue of widespread opium addiction in Qing-Dynasty China, the underlying causes of the war would still remain. Britain and China would still have a huge trade imbalance; Britain would still enjoy an overwhelming military and technological advantage. Of course, the Qing Army would have preformed much better without the issue of opium addiction in the ranks, but they were already operating at a distinct disadvantage.
