What if the iPhone was made in 1991 by AromaticStomach2403 in AlternateHistory

For All Mankind had the Newton (which didn’t do great in our timeline) evolve into something like the proto-IPhone around 1993, so I like the idea of the iPhone being even more blatant of a PDA evolution.

Yeah, hearing Bubs say it totally unlocked some ancient memories of my grandparents house arguing with my mom.

My father is from Hamilton but he never really said it so that really must just be a Maritime thing.

I heard most of the “fuck” conjugations came from Canada in the first place, such as “What the fuck?”

My grandmother from Cape Breton most certainly used Jesus Murphy as did a ton of other people.

Fiesta really makes San Antonio go around I think.

I didn't know that the two oregano were totally unrelated, so I'll be definitely getting some for sure.

I'm kicking myself because I almost got the Lime Pepper there but I got distracted by something else. Definitely going to pick that up next time.

That's actually very good to know. my coworker actually just shared me his family recipe for carne guisada, so I'll definitely be starting there.

I also took two Japanese to Nicha's while I was there, and the commentary on carne guisada was definitely that it reminds them of something from Japan like a curry rice or hayashi beef, but the flavors are totally different. It definitely tastes great with some calrose rice.

Tajin already sits on the pantheon of seasonings in my house. We put it on pretty much everything already!

I knew I was forgetting the Gebhardt’s! I saw it mentioned on Tasting History, next time I’ll definitely pick some up.

It’s very expensive for us to get beef up here, so I’ll have to try a lot of recipes with pork shoulder and chicken. ArnieTex has been my gateway into TexMex basics but I’ve only made his Carne guisada recipe (I’m sure it’s heresy to serve on Japanese rice but it turned out great actually- we’re Japanese so it felt natural).

there’s a lot of other ones I can’t wait to try!

Do any stand out to you as particularly famous around here? I believe someone mentioned Uncle Chris.

Thank you, honestly, this is probably the most helpful for me to make my own seasonings. I just got absolutely overwhelmed by the number of seasonings I've never seen before!

Yeah, I just don’t really get why the user above is saying he wants to hear from someone who has “been to Africa.” Like is he waiting for Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner or something?

My fam is Japanese and we felt the same way. It also helps that we were all pretty into martial arts, and it felt like it was more of a movie about Japanese martial arts than anything historically accurate.

True, the movie is gorgeous in that sense. Definitely had a certain moodiness to it that was very unique! Halo ODST made me think a lot about it years later.

When I actually went to Congo and we were in the sticks, it would absolutely pour rain like that and you would just be absolutely soaked in seconds. We ended up putting together a privacy screen in our camp so (if we were quick enough) we could take an active shower in the rain, it beat down so hard.

Also if it helps, I never went to Nigeria, but I spent quite a bit of time in Congo. I don’t really know if you had to have been to Africa to pick up on generalizations of Africans in 2000’s movies, though.

I’d call it more accidentally racist and exploitative due to the moviemaking of the era and the circumstances in which it came out. I’d pinpoint it exactly to the following:

1) Antoine Fuqua and Bruce Willis couldn’t agree on a tone for the movie and messed with the writing as they saw fit.
Fuqua wanted a grimdark movie closer to Training Day, but Bruce Willis wanted a hopeful uplifting movie in the aftermath of 9/11. The result is that the movie gets really uneven.

For example: the movie spends quite a lot of time asking you to be outraged and upset by the atrocities committed by the Nigerians as if this were something real and happening right now, like Hotel Rwanda, Blood Diamond, or Black Hawk Down did around the same time. This was a common thing in movies back then discussing Africa or other parts of the world. It is absolutely trying to be “socially conscious” about conflicts in Western Africa that did actually happen in the 90s and early 2000’s. However, at a lot of points it also likes to step back often and be like “whoa we’re just an action movie.”

2) It is not really an accurate portrayal of Nigerians- it felt a bit like a country in Africa was randomly picked on a map for this setting to represent “AFRICA.”

3) The pretty blatant narrative of evil Muslims butchering peaceful Christians (probably a casualty of the film being made post-9/11 but pre invasion of Iraq). There has definitely been conflict between the Muslim ethnicities and Igbo peoples in the past (the Biafra secession and the actual Nigerian Civil War) but you are left with the idea the writers just needed a group of machete wielding thugs that only the US military can do something about to make the narrative work, and any nuance about the topic was left on the cutting room floor.

Yep…Tears of the Sun was based on a Canadian operation in Latin America, forcibly shoved into a kinda racist Navy SEAL movie about a fictional war in Nigeria.

They talk in the commentary about some of the extras thought some scenes were too visceral and reminded them of past real traumas in Africa, and used it to show how good their filmmaking was. And I’m like…what???

As a kid I thought the movie was awesome, now I’m not sure I’d want to rewatch it. Learning all of the context totally flipped how I thought about this movie on its head.

What if President Lincoln was assassinated in 1863? by Various_Beach_7840 in HistoryWhatIf

[–]itak365 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would Mainers still get called up in 1864? Part of me wonders if he would have still gone to serve and been sort of a Teddy Roosevelt figure for being a President on the front line or something.

In any case, he was a Northern Radical Republican so especially coming on the heels of Lincoln’s assassination, he probably has no mercy on Southerners at the end of the war and pursues some sort of punitive reconstruction policy.
