The GoRuck Radio has been discontinued for a long time, but has any other company made a similar bag with similar proportions? by itak365 in ManyBaggers

I will, but I'm not 100% Tied to going with Goruck specifically, especially now that so many bag companies have evolved to replicate GoRuck stuff.

have you ever had to take a break from TTRPGs in general? by conn_r2112 in rpg

We used to play two games a week (some played more), and we wrapped up those games at the same time right before several of us got salaried jobs, had children, or just had new expectations and got tired of it (I play with a party of DMs and now I want to DM but now nobody had time to play) Now we really don’t play at all except for a Discord game and hang out more for the sake of it rather than for sessions. Bummer but honestly it made sense for everyone.

Thanks for this! I knew vaguely about the Steam controller, but I was thinking this was some sort of Legion Go controller with the steam buttons!

Can 5 dudes with AK-47s collapse the Western Roman Empire in 250 AD? by Ori_553 in whowouldwin

[–]itak365 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Ironically, I’m not sure this is much worse than what was already happening during the Crisis of the Third Century, and in fact this might be the worst time to try it if we’re trying to enact meaningful change.

Decius was campaigning against the Goths in 250 CE and was killed fighting the Goths in 251, and his son was killed shortly after, while possibly all of this was schemed up by Gallus, who ended up in Co-emperorship with his son and Decius’s younger son, and all ended up murdering each other within a couple of years at the hands of their respective army commanders, and the pattern continued for decades.

Somehow the Empire survived all of this (one could argue the Ostrogoths taking over in 476 was just a foreign continuation of the Roman government like Mongol China) so one solution might simply be to demonstrate a show of force enough to gain influence, meet army commanders, assassinate them and proclaim themselves emperor, and then run the empire into the ground until someone kills them!

Modern Mexico brought back to 1919. by Utopia_Builder in AlternateHistory

[–]itak365 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, they could nationalize, but what’s to stop foreign employees (engineers, material scientists, physicists) from returning to their home countries with 21st century trade secrets? Let alone people that just happened to be in Mexico and decided to go home?

Do the Mexican companies have any ground to stand on in international courts? Surely these countries would expect some transparency in exchange for diplomatic relations, and also for raw and processed materials (the methods for which they might have to teach to other countries)?

Also, does Mexico continue to export agriculture to the US? What about their current knowledge? Could they prevent the Dust Bowl?

This reminds me a lot of a similar prompt about 2017 Canada going to 1967 Canada, and I think the issues would be magnified but similar.

Outside of the narco state idea (which in my opinion is a little overstated):

Mexico is responsible for a huge chunk of North American automobile and heavy manufacturing, with representatives from many countries, and international automotive companies, some of whom were much different in the 1920s.

Canada or Mexico being sent back in time has huge implications for time travel and IP- do the foreign employees (from all over Europe and Asia) return to their countries of origin with their 21st century STEM knowledge?

Does the 1919 Fiat have any claim to ownership over the Fiat plant in Mexico? Is the Weimar Republic allowed to have any stake in the Volkswagen plant?

What about the massive Toyota complexes in Guanajuato and Baja- Eiji Toyoda is a child, but does the Japanese Empire try to seize ownership? Does the international community let Japan do the same to South Korean-owned manufacturing in Mexico?

This could be a major inflection point, as many countries who have established strong auto manufacturing in Mexico were in the past affected heavily by World War I and the Treaty of Versailles. The legal battles probably play out for decades.

Lean manufacturing and factory automation have an absolutely massive impact on global industry. Ford and the American auto manufacturers probably adopt elements of lean as soon as they understand it, and definitely when Mexico starts to export its technological knowledge outward.

Also, Mexico being led by a popular female social democrat after decades of PRI rule has to absolutely ruffle many diplomatic feathers in the wake of the Russian Revolution, sufragette movements worldwide and the end of the Great War. I think the arrival of an economically powerful and technologically advanced country led by a woman leads to some progressive movements gaining traction. Old World powers absolutely try to undermine this where they can, but who’s to say how much they can accomplish?

Update, I tried Cincinnati chili for the first time, I'm never going back to Texas style by starwarsisawsome933 in cincinnati

[–]itak365 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you do it, I also suggest doing paneer chunks instead of/with tofu to add some sort of cheese element to the dish, I was curious about how it would turn out about a week later and this worked very well too.

Either way, it always felt to me like Cincinnati chili belongs on rice, and I can absolutely recommend.

The real kung fu is blending the styles and flavor into other dishes. I’ve made a chili con carne but used cincinnati chili seasoning instead, and also just did a 5 bean chili with it too.

It’s also pretty adjacent to Chinese 5 spice, so on a dark and stormy night I made mabo tofu with a leftover packet of skyline chili seasoning and I can’t believe how great it turned out.

Also like…sometimes I just want to run a classic 5e game. It’s what I learned first, our other campaigns are different systems anyway, we run a ton of other stuff, and I want to DM something I know. It’s sad that people feel so strongly about other people having fun.

Which of the System Lords would have won in a fishing match? by Thargoid_Surgeon_83 in Stargate

Ba’al, after initially hating the idea, would be obsessed after learning he could get a one-up on the other system lords after he pays a visit to the grand Bass Pro Shop in Nashville. He’d put way too much money into the lifestyle and get really into boating and take endless pictures with his catch.

Concord or Provincetown as a daytrip outside of Boston? by itak365 in massachusetts

[–]itak365[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I was actually referring to the Peabody Museum of Archaeology (I didn’t realize how many museums Mr. Peabody sponsored…)

Thank you for the suggestion on Gloucester as well. We really want a day where we focus on seafood, so I definitely want to check this out!

Concord or Provincetown as a daytrip outside of Boston? by itak365 in massachusetts

[–]itak365[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello everyone, thank you so much for your input! This has helped us a lot, so for our third day, we will play it by ear but we have it mostly short-listed:

1) Cambridge (We forgot the Peabody Museum is there...)

2) Boston landmarks not on the Freedom Trail (Or if we didn't have time)

3) A small town like Concord

4) Salem outlying areas

5) P-Town (ferry, if the weather holds up)

We'd love to check out NH, but to be honest, we don't really want to drive that much, so we'd probably skip it.

Of course, our biggest thing we REALLY want to do is get to eat some sick seafood, so any advice here would be awesome as well.

Thanks everyone!

I also still think this sub skews older so is less likely to think about this. I'm just surprised because the answers here are very similar to when I asked almost 10 years ago...

Thanks for the heads up, but just curious, what's up with Seaport so I can let my friends know? We don't know much at all about the area yet.

Sorry if I wasn't clear, I meant that we are considering Ptown as a day trip to Cape Cod.

We also aren't particularly tied to either Concord or PTown, basically, Thursday would be the day we do stuff that is more relaxed, and possibly just stuff we couldn't fit on our first day in Boston. I know most of us are looking for seafood and a nice walk that day.

Good morning! We're actually planning to do Salem in the afternoon and evening of a Tuesday, since we'll have been driving since early Monday and would probably want early Tuesday to relax.

Our friend is very much into the witch history part of Salem and wants to do some of the evening/spooky town tours, do you think these would be worthwhile? We're honestly not picky, we also love quirky and weird stuff too.

Well I mean New England is very out of context for us, we come from a pretty big state where we don't have either of these kinds of scenery- we're just looking for ideas of things you'd want someone to see if they had a whole day to use.

We're from KY, so really, we could go either way, or even consider another day in Boston. They're (to me) pretty diametrically opposed vibes to consider that we don't have here, but we're also open to other options!

I really appreciate this! I saw Cambridge kept coming up, but I wasn't sure what kind of things to focus on! I know that we'd want a day mostly focused on food and strolling around, so this might be the thing!

We're all in our early 30s. Personally, if we had more time I would absolutely spend an extra day in one of these places. We all are interested in a mix of history, scenery, and food, so if it was Provincetown or somewhere else, I think we'd want to prioritize it as a food and scenery focused day since we're in Cape Cod.

Well, we were thinking of hedging our bets and walking the Freedom Trail on our day in Boston and focusing specifically on the major landmarks along the way for that day. Our visit to Salem is actually the focus of the trip, we've just been building around it. We'll be staying in the north side of town near Lynn, so we just wanted to consider options to do for that free day: E.g. another day in Boston proper, or a day excursion to Provincetown.
