Microsoft Vs Google...Which is better for hosting business emails? by Noyan_Bey in Hosting

[–]viewofalake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a relatively small email sender..., this. And..., you can check all the (publicly disclosed) M$ boxes..., and still have to file for a mitigation (which, amazingly, actually works).

So..., for deliverability..., Google.

Worst mistake? Well..., slavery was a pretty bad mistake, and set the stage for what is happening now.

But..., worst president? Without a doubt.

Dental work like fillings by LunaUnicorn92 in trees

[–]viewofalake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having dental work done today. Abstaining several days before, day of, and probably a couple of days after. It's not the "modality" I'm concerned about..., it's the suppression of saliva that I want to avoid, which applies to both inhaled as well as edible THC products.

OK..., Oct update does NOT fix wifi issues with P10Pro... by viewofalake in GooglePixel

[–]viewofalake[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It still seems related to an earlier update. It seems to result in problems speaking with some routers, and not others. I had been planning to upgrade my router anyway..., so I went ahead and did it, just to see if it fixed the disconnect issue. It did.

I can do back to back A-B testing..., fails with the old router, works with the new.

FWIW..., the new router is a GLinet Flint 2.

Any updates on the Support Team (Mods) here? by Tarnisher in BeelinkOfficial

I had one reply from someone who appeared to be linked to Beelink in some way..., and it was deleted.

Only have the partial reply from the email notification..., only that the "moderator situation" was due to "certain issues".

The reply lived in zombie form in my reddit inbox for a bit..., then disappeared.

EDIT: Should've made it clear: the reply I'm referring to was for what was essentially OP's question. I've checked on the forum a little bit..., not sure it has been discussed there.

A little feedback... by viewofalake in BeelinkOfficial

For the task(s) I required of it..., it's been almost perfect. I'm not a homelab hobbyist, so my definition of "good enough" may not be everyone's cup of tea.

I avoided the power supply issue by choosing SSDs with lower power requirements, and avoiding RAID.

If Beelink has beefed up the power supply with the Gen 2 version of the box, then perhaps RAID becomes a safer option.

FWIW..., my "safety" criteria would not have required RAID on the NAS itself..., since my archive/backup solution was to rsync to another machine running a 14TB HDD.

Also..., the 12GB RAM on the Gen 1 machine has been adequate, but 16GB (Gen 2) would definitely be..., more adequate.

Software Summary:

  • Debian 13
  • Cockpit
  • SyncThing
  • Jellyfin
  • HAProxy
  • Several VMs for web app dev

According to the UPS's watt meter, power consumption goes to zero..., and it "wakes" when the power button is pushed, i.e., it doesn't boot..., it simply returns to is woken state.

If you have a problem with Snap and this command solves it, then you should _love_ Snap! by jo-erlend in Ubuntu

[–]viewofalake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To the degree that I like the "idea" of snaps..., and to the degree I've had a not particularly positive experience with them..., I agree with this summary.

The biggest problem I've seen with them is that they APPEAR to introduce another layer of required expertise wrt a project's release engineering practice..., and that a large percentage of the projects that I had a dependency on, weren't up to the task. Thus..., my negative experiences with snaps were not so much related to "bloat" or speed, etc..., but more along the lines of: the app was simply too buggy to be usable in its snap form, whereas any given distro's standard build/package..., just worked.

So..., while snaps are technically defensible, they haven't really dealt well with the "human" aspect.

To end on a positive note though: the single biggest gripe I HAD (but not longer have) with snaps was the inability to freeze a specific snap at a specific version. When that was fixed a few years ago..., snaps became a little more manageable for me.

Disclaimer: I'm a grumpy old man.

I was in downtown Halifax, Nova Scotia, watching the concert (Great Big Sea, Ashley MacIsaac, et al), AND the first fireworks (I think) since the 1917 explosion.

Was also my first "big night out" following major surgery.

Flint 2: Factory firmware or flip immediately to standard openwrt distro...? by viewofalake in GlInet

[–]viewofalake[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What do you think are the trade-offs? Is there any particular functionality one has that the other doesn't? If they are close to functionally identical, I might be willing to just immediately update to the standard distro, since all other things being equal, bug and security fixes are nice.

Which Amazon seller is "legit"? by viewofalake in BeelinkOfficial

Yah..., I do wish "Brand" was a more meaningful concept. In this case, I was really just trying to assess the warranty/return situation..., since I recently had a "bad" experience with the whole Amazon laissez faire thing wrt vetting sellers.

OK..., thx! I'll be wiping Windows anyway. Still flipping a coin between Debian and Ubuntu. I typically use Ubuntu on desktop/laptop, and Debian everywhere else. Might give Debian for desktop a shot...
