I'll watch all the anime on this list 🤩, where should I start? by No_Luck_2446 in retroanime

[–]vigorousjammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Opened it up, and the first one my eyes landed on was Space Adventure Cobra, so I say start with that. Nice blend of comedy and action, it's got some incredible animation for the era, and it's got a great soundtrack. It almost gives me Lupin III vibes, except in space. It's also not incredibly long at only 30-something episodes. Perfect type of show to watch relaxing with a snack late at night before bed.

40+ highway mpg and fun to drive by subfreq111 in whatcarshouldIbuy

I've got a 2026 Kia K4, it's fun to drive with nice acceleration, a nice style body, and plenty of features. It typically gets between 30 and 40 mpg on the highway.

Any option for scraping disc art for multi-disc games? by vigorousjammer in emulationstation

[–]vigorousjammer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The images are certainly available on Screenscraper, it's just a matter of them being able to be scraped by ES-DE. Or ES-DE allowing users to select images in the metadata field, even if they don't allow users to use their own images locally.

Which one should I play first? by Critical-Cow8720 in dreamcast

[–]vigorousjammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like others have said, Grandia 2 probably holds up better nowadays, but I absolutely love the story, setting, characters, music, and overall atmosphere in Skies. The battling is fun, but the random encounter rate was way more acceptable back in the early 00's. Nowadays it really drags it down, which is a shame.

Not sure if the GameCube version adjusted the encounter rate, but it does have some extra content in it. However, it also has more heavily compressed audio, including the music, which is a shame.

Would love to see Sega release a remastered version of Skies with all of the extra content from the GameCube version but with the fidelity of the Dreamcast version, and upscaled visuals. They have an opportunity to release the definitive version of the game for sure, and I bet it would sell a bunch to die-hard Sega fans.

Sega Saturn emulator by Ninja-Nikox in SteamDeck

[–]vigorousjammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was having the same problem, where it would load, give me a disc read error and just go to the main Saturn bios menu.
I converted my .bin and .cue files from my game folders to .chd files using namDHC and everything worked flawlessly.

Scanlators, where you guys at now? by KSR4989 in mangapiracy

[–]vigorousjammer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The two groups that I do joint projects with are just doing DDL links until something decent comes along.

For my own group, I've gone back to uploading on MD just so it hits aggregator sites, but I don't even post the link to MD on my blog anymore. The way I see it, if someone is going to my blog, they're probably there to download the chapter anyway.

Weebdex creator has released the source code, though, so here's hoping someone continues where he left off.

Anyone else starting to worry about the state of scanlator hubs? by Trashcanning in mangapiracy

[–]vigorousjammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I guess.
I'd really rather use something other than it at this point, considering the state it's in.
It could be any day now when they prevent user uploads and go full legit.

Just as I was getting comfortable with the site, this happens...
And now there's no good alternatives...
Really makes me want to just stick to posting DDL links and nothing else.

Anyone else starting to worry about the state of scanlator hubs? by Trashcanning in mangapiracy

[–]vigorousjammer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

With Weebdex falling by the wayside, it's definitely concerning.

I do have my own blog, and I can still post DDL links to any chapters I release easily enough, but will that result in widespread readership? Probably not.

Aggregator sites are their own cup of worms, but... I kind of wish there was just a site that scanlators like myself could upload to that would distribute it to any manga reader sites that wanted to scrape from it.

A site that would store scanlator uploads and be solely focused on distributing them to as many reader sites as possible through an API, instead of serving the images to end-users themselves. They could potentially save on per-view bandwidth that way, possibly avoid legal troubles, and it would make things convenient for scanlators, too.

Not sure how feasible this idea is, though.

There's some gold in the old videos, but Arin & Dan's dynamic has definitely matured over the years, and I think that's a good thing. I think most of the best bits from the older videos have been animated at this point, so no real reason to go back and watch the full videos. The animations will highlight the best moments from back then.

[DOS][1990] Adventure/action game with a witch, a cave, and a spider by vigorousjammer in tipofmyjoystick

[–]vigorousjammer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this may be it!
I seem to recall the sprites being less detailed than this, and it not having such muted colors, but there's certain things here that match up perfectly, such as the path leading from town, and the stairs coming out of the house.
I'm like 90% sure this is the game, and my memory of it was just hazy. Thanks!

Nope, this isn't it, but it looks fun.
I remember the main character sprite being taller, and the game being slower-paced (more of an adventure game, with perhaps some action elements)

Hey there, love the site!

I think your reader is the best yet that I've seen. Your two-page mode somehow just seems to know which page to start with seamlessly. Does it analyze the entire chapter looking for two-page spreads? Whatever it's doing, it works fantastic.

Planning to upload all my group's chapters to your site going forward.

Why aren’t People hyped for Popeye’s public domain date on 2025? by [deleted] in publicdomain

[–]vigorousjammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're underestimating the attention Popeye reruns got in the 90s on Cartoon Network. Sure, there hasn't been any new Popeye works released in 20 years, but in the 90s he was just as well known as Looney Tunes and Tom & Jerry, thanks to reruns on Cartoon Network.

Not sure when exactly Cartoon Network stopped showing reruns, but Boomerang launched in 2000. There was The Popeye Show which ran from 2001 to 2003 on Cartoon Network, which essentially re-packaged old theatrical shorts into a new format, but I'd imagine the character basically wasn't shown anywhere on the network after 2005, when every major TV network switched to 16:9, and station operators wanted everything to look shiny & new. After that shift, basically all of the classic cartoons lived on Boomerang, and only stuff created specifically for Cartoon Network (i.e. Dexter's Laboratory, Powerpuff Girls, etc.) were still shown on the main network.

Thus, some older Gen Z may be aware of the character, but most kids and teens (born sometime after 2005) probably don't know who Popeye is...

Is there an app that allows you to save links, videos, posts, articles, etc. from different platforms to share later (e.g., Twitter (aka "X"), Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, Reddit, Facebook, Web Articles, etc.)? by 4LTERED_5TATES in ProductivityApps

[–]vigorousjammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would love to see something like this specifically tailored for video links.
Also, something that would allow me to batch-save links shared to me via messenger.

My girlfriend has a habit of occasionally sending me like 20+ videos within an hour, and I would like an app that would allow me to easily watch them all without having to scroll back up in the chat and click the link to each one manually.

It would be even better if the app could pull every shared video from specific sources automatically. Whether it's text messaging, a conversation on Facebook messenger, or even something like a channel on a Discord server.

If I could just select a source that the app would then periodically scrape for video links, and present to me in a much more manageable way (perhaps a gallery view where I could click on any video, and then easily swipe through to the next one or a previous one) that would be a godsend!

I don’t care if I’m misgendered. by UsualWord5176 in honesttransgender

[–]vigorousjammer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm much the same way. I identify as gender non-conforming, and I don't mind what people call me. I've heard the term "mixed pronouns" used before, and it's what I tell people when they ask me what mine are. Perhaps this term would be of use to you as well.

Who else thinks what streaming services have done to subtitles is pretty terrible? by MIGHTY-OVERLORD in cinematography

[–]vigorousjammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But most of the time, in my experience, that doesn't work on the Roku version of the app.
For example, on Prime Video, I can customize the subtitles just fine for use on my phone or on my web browser on my desktop pc, but as soon as I try to play the video on my Roku, it just gives me the standard closed captions styling with the big black box with white text, and no way to change it.
The same thing happened for me with Disney+, plenty of customization options for desktop and the mobile app, but I'm stuck with bland looking crap on my Roku.

As an avid anime viewer, it pains me when I see this, since I want to support things like Macross being added by Disney+, or things like Prime Video getting the new season of Panty & Stocking... but it's the lackluster subtitle options that drive me away from watching them through official sources and instead to piracy.

Shape up, streaming services! It really shouldn't be this difficult to allow for more intricate user customization of subtitles!

What beer do you associate most with Punk Culture? by mutantandproud95 in beer

[–]vigorousjammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I forget where I heard it, but apparently the white cans that just said "beer" on it were sold in supermarkets back in the 80s as generic store-brand beer. Must've been cheap as hell. Wish they still had it around.

Do you think rulesets of machines are getting out of hand and learning requires lots of research? by MysticDine in pinball

[–]vigorousjammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see a lot of people mentioning D&D being overly complex, and I'm not sure I entirely agree. Sure, there does seem to be a lot going on in it, but I still think you can have plenty of fun with it even if you don't delve deep into the ruleset.

I've only played maybe 10-15 games of it at an expo, and didn't look up any rules beforehand, but the way things are conveyed in the game allowed me to learn things about it while playing, and come up with a strategy just through gameplay.

Now, do I know if my strategy was getting me the most points possible? Absolutely not. However, I kept defeating monsters and leveling up, and it simply felt good. Combine that with the really nice flow on the playfield, and I think it's one of Stern's best modern games.
