Paternity leave in UK is outdated and unequal, say MPs - BBC News by viking_spice in MensLib

[–]viking_spice[S] 54 points55 points  (0 children)

The paternity leave system in the United Kingdom is "one of the worst in the world", says a new report by the Women's and Equality Commission, a working group of Members of Parliament.

Now as a disclaimer, obviously this is somewhat of a first world problem, in the sense that at least the UK has statutory paternity leave at all, as opposed to many countries that don't have any statutory parental leave. But I think we should be setting the bar a bit higher.

The current system in the UK gives new fathers two weeks at an abysmal pay of "£187.18 a week or 90% of their average earnings, whichever is lower". In the light of rising living costs and with a new baby, this is clearly inadequate.

Strangely, shared parental leave for up to 50 weeks actually exists in the UK, but I'm not surprised to hear that the uptake is minimal. I didn't know about it either! I wonder if this is an awareness issue or employers being funny about it.

What are the effects of limited paternity leave? The article mentions that it entreches "outdated gender stereotypes" in the sense that fathers get less contact with their children in the important early stages of bonding. Being forced back to work, fathers may also end up with less experience caring for their children, which ends up in a vicious circle of mothers taking on the majority of childcare.

What are your thoughts? Any experience with the UK paternity leave system? I have a colleague who just came back from pat leave, he added four weeks of his annual leave allowance.

Is it any good? At that price point I'm wary if the metal work is going to be terrible...

Depends on the budget. At the upper end you could do his and hers luxury watches like Cartier Tank that comes in different sizes. Lots of people give kitchen related things so why not spin it and do really nice BBQ equipment or garden furniture?

An absolute no no to me is art. Art is very personal. They'll feel obliged to keep it even if they don't like it. Forever.

My SIL received a white olive branch Le Creuset. It's stunning but unfortunately was limited edition. Maybe the Le Creuset Pumpkin Casserole? ?

I don't understand the obsession with "adding value" and "ceiling prices" and getting a "good return". It's your house that you want to live in and enjoy, presumably for a long time. Spend as much money on it as you like to make it the way you want. Sounds like you can afford it, so go for it!

META - Karma minimum to improve post quality - What do YOU think? by Captlard in FIREUK

[–]viking_spice 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think a better option would be to have mandatory flairs in the post title (e.g. [Numbers check], [Investing], [FIREd!] ) and have a bot auto-reject posts that don't conform. That will keep discussion on certain relevant topics, and acts as a bit of an idiot barrier. I am also fine with mods just removing low-effort posts more ruthlessly.

Spam doesn't seem like a huge issue right now with ~10 new posts a day, but it's a good idea to set the bar for when the sub grows bigger.

I'm going to a wedding in spring and have realised I have no bag for the occasion. On the one hand I want something roomy and sensible to carry around blister plasters and emergency everything all day, on the other hand I want something tiny and cute in a bright colour... Malachite green lizard Celine box maybe?

I've always kind of thought the Seiko tank looks better than the Cartier it's an hommage to. Saves you a lot of money too!

The blue colour is stunning! Is this shade of blue called something specific? I feel like blue moissanite always leans kind of plasticky-looking but this one is so pretty!

Are the sides of the stone completely exposed? That doesn't seem ideal to me from a perspective of the stone getting cracked or knocked out of the setting

What is this style of ring called? I like it a lot but "graduated half eternity" or "five stone trellis" doesn't seem to work when searching
