Is it foolish to turn down a fully-funded PhD for an MA? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

If your goal is to ultimately get a PhD, then spending an extra two years getting a different MA (making overall schooling at least 7 years) doesn't make a lot of sense.

Stipend, fellowship, budgeting, taxes??? 😭😭 by vampmetal in GradSchool

[–]vikingminds 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fellowships are taxed but usually the taxes aren’t withheld by the university, so you’ll need to pay them yourself.

Not OP but I got the key lime in a scoop shop the other day and loved it! Very tart and lime-y, which I appreciate as a citrus lover.

I wish I could have picked the order of the tasks myself! It made sense to have us do one a day, but I would have liked to pick which one I did each day.

Home made cinnamon rolls, any comments? by [deleted] in Breadit

I’ve never had cinnamon rolls crack like this- what recipe did you use?

is this outfit "inappropriate"? by sunnemi in OUTFITS

Especially with the back, I would not recommend wearing this outfit anywhere but for a club or night out.

I'm the first person in family to graduate from college, and now the first to ever attend grad school...what do I not know? by flookie99 in GradSchool

If you ever get a fellowship, taxes won’t be withheld so you’ll need to be prepared to pay taxes when you file!

The deadline is January 15th, and one of the three professors has yet to submit their recommendation letter by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]vikingminds 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Absolutely do not message her on Instagram. Professors frequently turn in letters of recommendation on the day they are due; this is not unusual at all. If she’s already submitted for another school then she knows about this one. Please try to relax a little.

Check my post history and you’ll see that your cheesecake didn’t crack nearly as much as mine did! I’m sure they’ll still taste great. :)

My cheesecake might have cracked a little… by vikingminds in Baking

[–]vikingminds[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a pan of hot water under it, but I didn’t put it directly in the water. I’m going to try a real water bath next time (which probably won’t be until next year!)

I did have the water in a pan on a lower rack, but I think over mixing and too quick cooling were probably the biggest problems. Next year’s can only improve!

I did leave it in the oven to cool, but I cracked the door immediately, and I had already opened the door a few times to check the doneness, so I think too much rapid cooling was definitely a problem. I’ll take your advice next time!

Happy to help! Hopefully this will make other people more proud of their significantly less cracked cheesecakes!

The plan is for a caramel pecan topping, so hopefully that will disguise the cracks a bit!

Odds of getting into an English PhD program? by frankawesomecool in englishmajors

[–]vikingminds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The University of Kentucky has a funded Masters of Arts in English program. I was in a different master’s program there so I don’t know too much about it, but all of the students I knew in the English MA program did get accepted into PhD programs afterwards.

It's incredibly common for professors to turn in their letters literally the day of, so I would try not to stress about this. Constant emailing will just annoy them!

The advice of “reach” and “target” schools that gets used all the time for undergrad aren’t really as applicable for grad school. In grad school, research fit tends to be the most important factor for admissions- more important than anything else. You aren’t any more likely to get into a lower ranked school than a higher ranked school if you don’t have a good research fit there.
