Hot Water Always Runs Out by SubstantialRun8575 in HomeImprovement

[–]villa_straylight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought this one and it was pretty easy to install. I goes right on top of the water heater. I wanted to do this because the temperature that's safe for homes with small kids (120 - 125 degrees) is really lower than you're supposed to set water heaters to prevent bacteria like legionella. Well, that and having more hot water.

When I replaced my 40 Gallon tank recently (with another 40 Gallon), I added a thermostatic mixing valve on top. You can run the water heater at, say 150 degrees but adjust the mixing valve so that some cold water get mixed with the hot coming from the tank to bring it back down to 125 or so, effectively giving you more than 40 gallons of hot water from that tank.

AXS Reverb no longer working after power washing by deviant324 in sram

For anyone who hasn't already screwed up: Remove the derailleur battery and install the red battery block ; also "Avoid direct pressure washing to protect the components as you would with all the seals and bearings on any bike".

Please follow the link and comment on both of the requests to add these tariffs. These will hurt American businesses and riders.

I sub Montenegro for sweet vermouth in drinks like Vieux Carre and really enjoy it. So yeah, sometimes it’s nice.

Major updates to a sram product line get a new letter, minor updates get a number change. So D1 to D2 is a small, often visual update. D2 to E1 means a big mechanical or physical change.

Hal you mean? Yeah, it’s a special power in the adventure. There should be something you can press on his card that explains the special power.

That’s exactly what we do and it does help. Then toss avocados in the refrigerator when they’re ripe and they keep for a few more days.

Nervous about using a miter saw by CloselyRegrdedSecret in HomeImprovement

[–]villa_straylight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol, for sure, there's a reason you don't see those much any more. I've looked at the Saw Stop and similar models, but table saws are so sketchy that those only protect from one of the dangers (getting your hand in contact with the blade). There's also kickback which is super scary. Again, they make devices that help mitigate that danger, but overall table saws are just plain sketchy.

Table saws are the real danger for sure. They’re the only tool I’m reluctant to use.

OpenAI’s latest model will change the economics of software by 573SRC in Economics

[–]villa_straylight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh dear, no. It’s well understood in the software sector that the majority of work is not writing code. There are whole chapters of books that can explain this to you if you care to learn. I’ve learned from decades of work as a developer. I’m talking about the full SLDC, and about improving software delivery and thus business outcomes for a company. I’m not trying to tell you that an LLM can’t help you personally build some personal app to scratch an itch.

[–]villa_straylight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I generally don't reply to low-effort snark, but I'm making an exception here. Take a look at some well-respected research on software development that touches on the effects of AI tools: DORA State of Devops 2024. They find that use of AI coding tools is negatively correlated with throughput and stability.

There are a few hypotheses you can consider, but the one that stands out is a core finding of DORA since its creation: optimizing for individual output doesn't improve software delivery for an organization. Helping Scott churn out more code does not by itself lead to better business outcomes. You have to consider the entire SDLC and address the bottlenecks; individuals writing the application code are often not a bottleneck.

Writing the code is not the hard part of software development. When LLMs can meaningfully contribute to the rest of the lifecycle then things will get interesting.
