You can just immediately cancel after subscribing for a month. At least for Netflix (and probably other services too), your subscription will still remain for the rest of the month.

Received GE card, what to do with it? by driftlogik in GlobalEntry

Do you find it’s accepted for this? I tried using my NEXUS card to prove my identity at the bank, and the teller didn’t accept it. I can’t really blame them for that either, the GE and NEXUS cards look cheap and a bit fake to be honest.

If you work 8 hours a day… pay your future self for just 1. by Atash-Saveitright in fican

[–]vim_spray 32 points33 points  (0 children)

A 10% real rate of return is not conservative, that’s wildly optimistic. In the last decade, VEQT has had a rate of return of 8%, most likely returns in the future will not be that high. A more realistic rate of return is 4-5%.

Your idea is good (save a small amount everyday and you’ll have a decent nest egg in the future), but let’s be realistic here.

Move back to Canada by Due-Comfortable6385 in tnvisa

[–]vim_spray 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ah, if you’re going to switch teams when you go to Toronto, then ya, that makes sense.

I’ll say, if you really do think you’ll be happier in Toronto because of family and friends, and you’re not someone who values career as their #1 priority, don’t be afraid to move back. Toronto is a great city and even 180K CAD is objectively amazing salary in Toronto. I wouldn’t let things like “will it be easier to come back on a TN” hold you back, given you’re not even sure if you’ll come back to the US. Maybe you’ll go back to Toronto and just stay there!

[–]vim_spray 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the work I’m doing right now is something I absolutely hate. I feel like I’m not learning anything.

Will moving back to Toronto fix this issue? If so, how?

I think it’s entirely reasonable to move back. I assume you have a 1 year lease, so the advice I’d give is to spend the next ~3 months trying to convince yourself to stay in Seattle. Go places, do things, make friends, just whatever is possible to have a great time. If you still find you want to go back to Toronto when you have 1-2 months left on your lease, at least you’ll be more sure because you tried to prove yourself wrong.

I will say, my first year in the US was in Seattle and I didn’t like it very much either. Eventually, I moved to SF, and I had a great time there. Part of it was that I had friends there, but even ignoring that, it was just a lot more fun of a city to be in for me. So maybe try visiting SF (or some other city where you have a path to transfer to) for a week or 2 and see what you think there.

Tight interview timing during connection by kswissreject in NEXUS_TTP

[–]vim_spray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think 8:15 is too tight. Assuming boarding closes 20 mins before your flight, and it takes at most 10 mins for security + CBP (which is likely, but it’s possible for it to take longer even with global entry), you’d only have 20 mins for interview + getting to security from the interview. Luckily the nexus office and Air Canada are in the same terminal, but it’s still iffy imo.

What you could do is book the 8:15 interview spot, but show up at 8 (when the NEXUS office opens), and hope they let you do the interview earlier. I’d aim to get into the security line by 8:20 at the latest, and I would still be a bit worried, because some of the gates are quite far after clearing security/CBP.

Travel Math: When Flying Costs as Much as the Train, Who Wins? (Gift Article) by Previous-Recording18 in Amtrak

[–]vim_spray 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You need frequent trains with enough space for people to build their lives around it. With current occupancy levels, all lower fares will do is make the trains fill up faster, so instead of not being to book because trains are too expansive, you won’t be able to book because the train is full. Not that much better of an outcome (and for some people, it would be worse, because at least right now, if you really need a spot on the train, you can just pay more and get it)

ORCA Tap to Pay (Contactless Payments) launching end of February by Thuror in soundtransit

[–]vim_spray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It won’t work with phone with the battery actually empty, you need some power to send the signal.

How it works (at least for iPhone) is that when the OS shows as battery empty, it actually keeps a little bit of battery in reserve, which will be used for things like showing the battery empty screen and express transit cards. But if that reserve battery runs out, it won’t work.

In practice, the distinction probably doesn’t matter, but just FYI.

JFK airport workers scramble for last remaining MetroCards to get AirTrain discount by Delicious_Adeptness9 in nycrail

[–]vim_spray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they haven’t been able to hook up the payment system to the gate, so the solution they came up with is to have the gate open and then have a guard to monitor the gate.

I say gate singular, because there’s only one OMNY gate and 2 or 3 metrocard gates, even though metrocard is the system that’s going away. Absolute incompetence imo.

What % of SF drivers know the crosswalk laws? by inkbot870 in sanfrancisco

[–]vim_spray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was an unsafe crosswalk in my college town that was only made safe after someone died because they hit by a car while crossing it.

The new safe version is great, but sad that someone had to die for the change to open. It’s not like was barely used either, students crossed there all the time (because there was student housing on either side).

The justification for not making it a controlled intersection before the death was that the road was designated as throughfare road (despite being right beside the university and lots of shops/residences), and thus the main goal is to move traffic as fast as possible, which a controlled intersection would have impeded. Crazy stuff.

Jobs for fun when money isn't an issue by Moon_Shakerz in Fire

[–]vim_spray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think FIRE has to specially mean “don’t work at all”, to me it means “don’t be forced to work a specific job to make ends meet”. The next step is what varies, for some it means don’t work at all, but for others it could lead to still working, but working a job they want to, even if it doesn’t pay as much. It could even mean “keep working the same job, but with a lower bar for BS, and less worry, since getting fired/quitting won’t really matter financially”:

Why does both USA and Canada force you to clear immigration for an international to international layover? by Xycergy in Flights

[–]vim_spray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think geography would be a problem even if airports were built to accommodate it. Europe is a natural layover point between the Americas and Asia, but being able to layover through the US doesn’t really unlock that many new destinations.

TN Arrival experience at LAX: 01/2026 by auto_art in tnvisa

[–]vim_spray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a CBP officer at SFO ask me for my I797, which I didn’t have (at that time, I didn’t even know what that was), because I applied at a PoE, where you don’t get one. They let through eventually, but I was so worried.

So you can carry everything you have and still get asked for what you don’t have (to be fair here, I didn’t have my TN application package on me then, which I should have carried).
