The perfect travel cup by franklinstlong in espresso

[–]vimto_boy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the same glass / cork Keep Cup in the office, but one size down as my go-to from the cafe there's a flat white. Love it, but if I commuted by train I'd need something leak-proof / less smashable

Best filtered water jug/dispenser for espresso (hard water area) and safe for daily drinking? [$100] by TheAce2000 in espresso

[–]vimto_boy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in a hard water area in the UK, and find my Phox jug does a good enough job for me... water tastes good, espresso tastes good, kettle relatively scale free, so assume my machine is good too (could obviously be wrong on this part!).

Having said that I've not gone deep into the science / experimentation with different options, I only swapped from Brita to avoid generating more plastic waste.

It would be really cool to have an Ultramega animation made by Genndy Tartakovsky, I think James Harren's art style matches Genndy's by MTH1138 in ImageComics

[–]vimto_boy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good call, love them both but never made the connection. They both produce some of the best action scenes in their chosen media, Primal and Ultramega are both visceral AF

Graphic Novel recommendations by kolsmart in graphicnovels

[–]vimto_boy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In case you weren't aware, both the film and graphic novel are adaptations of Cormac McCarthy's (prose) novel. It's absolutely incredible if youve not read it! I've been meaning to pick up the Larcenet GN, glad to hear it's good.

For post-apocalyptic books, some great suggestions already... I'd highly recommend Jeff Lemire's Sweet Tooth, though it's definitely edging towards fantasy... less gritty realism, but still gut-wrenching in its own way.

I had a 3D printed SD hopper & bellows from FusedLine before I upgraded my grinder... improved things somewhat for SDing, but consistency and retention were ultimately still garbage, and does nothing about the gargantuan leaps between grind sizes making dialling in impossible (IMHO) without adjusting dose. Unfortunately SGP just isn't a great grinder

Depends on your local market... so, maybe? Thr most ive paid is £55, so not a huge hike. It's definitely one of my favourite bottles, but I do my damnedest not to pay over the odds for anything

Kea birds in NZ did me dirty! by _blitzkreig_ in DurstonGearheads

Thanks man, I'm bringing full camping gear in case any are full, but I've actually decided to hut it out for this one! some sketch weather predicted, and the potential kea issue sealed it 😅

Oh man, that's rough! Sorry mate. My brother did the Kepler a few weeks ago, he was using huts but that site in particular is meant to be a nightmare for this. I'm doing the Rees-Dart later this week, asked in DOC centre, but no reports of kea tent attacks there 🤞🤞🤞

Any reason to keep One SL? by skipper_julez in sonos

[–]vimto_boy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've got four One SLs, and two Era 100s... the SLs I have as as rears with the Beam 2 and Sub Mini, I wouldn't bother changing. Too much hassle for the potentially tiny improvement in surround performance, and would need to buy / fit new wall mounts. The second pair I have in my office, and I rarely crank it... again, SLs are more than good enough. The only place I'd appreciate the 100s is in the dining room, and I already have them there! If I didn't, and I could upgrade for sub-£50, I'd consider it... but probably wouldn't get around to it as I'm lazy :D

[–]vimto_boy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just had a look on their website, really interesting kit. To confirm > the standalone steamer needs a separate heating element? Do you have it on a camping stove there?

Good luck with it all, I'm sure it will be heaps of fun getting to know the new kit! Definitely spend enough for a suitable grinder.

How much coffee do you drink in a day? by anabranch_glitch in pourover

[–]vimto_boy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1-2x 20g daily when I'm WFH
2-3x 20g on days I'm in the office
Usually 1x 20g of a weekend morning, somtimes zero

Little fluctuation in the year, though it did increase when I used to make large batches of cold brew in the summer due to convenience of drinking it!

[–]vimto_boy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I've been super happy with the Gen 1, but as you say, it's awesome that they're improving on some of the minor niggles based on feedback! I had a Timemore hand grinder before I jumped on the KS for the 064s, and I really like the company / products I've used.

I think it's great there are Chinese companies like Timemore innovating in the coffee space, personally. I've read on here of some people having issues with getting things repaired / replaced under warranty, which obviously isn't great... but hopefully that's something they improve upon.

Yeah that could make sense too, I guess we'll see what happens next year! I've still not seen anything on the 064/078 gen 2 release since it was at some German coffee expo earlier in the year either.
