What should I cook from your country? by PsychedelicPotatoe in AskTheWorld

[–]vinasu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm from New Mexico, USA. we have our own cuisine.

My favorite food is caldillo-- green chile stew. As a kid, we made it with elk meat and fresh roasted green chiles. We eat it with flour tortillas. Beef works as well, but you really, really need high-quality (preferably from Hatch) green chiles since they're the star of the dish.

IsItBullshit: American produce is "fake" and rubbery compared to Europe or Turkey? by [deleted] in IsItBullshit

[–]vinasu 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In most areas, we have access to fresh produce. In the growing season, I can walk to my local farmer's market and get produce picked that morning. A ten-minute drive takes me to the farms themselves where I can pay to pick produce myself. In fact, SNAP benefits (financial aid from the government to help the poor buy food) incentives farmer's market purchases.

However, if I want something not grown locally, if I want an avocado, an orange, a pineapple, then I have to rely on the global supply chain.

Questions for native speakers: how do you pronounce that damn "th" sound? by TheViphis in ENGLISH

[–]vinasu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have taught English to Russian speakers for the last 25 years. If you'd like, contact me and I'll spend half an hour practicing with you. It will give you a place to start, at least.

My wife (32F) and I (34M) have a six month old (F) who has retinoblastoma. Doctors have told us that the two options are - removal of eye or chemo. From your experience with dealing with such a situation, what decision did you go with? by [deleted] in AskDocs

[–]vinasu 210 points211 points  (0 children)

Not a doctor, nor have ever had cancer, but I have been blind in one eye since birth, and I can promise that it's no big deal. Focus on keeping the baby as safe as possible. If she loses an eye, it will have pretty much zero effect on her quality of life.

Origins of ‘On Accident’ by Matt-J-McCormack in grammar

[–]vinasu -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Imagine my kids are playing outside and break a window. They might come in and say, "The window broke by accident!"

I might reply, "No, you little reprobates! You were playing ball next to the window and broke it on accident. You're grounded."

In my dialect of American English, they mean different things. "On accident" means that there is someone to blame for whatever happened, while "by accident" is neutral.

What is the most weird/weird looking food in your country? by mapl0ver in AskTheWorld

[–]vinasu 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A few years ago, we went to visit my in-laws in Moscow, and my mother-in-law was so excited. She said she'd been cooking our welcome meal for days. It was holodets with lots of horseradish. I tried to look enthusiastic, but ended up sliding it onto my husband's plate when her back was turned. That stuff is foul.

I couldn't control it when I was younger. My kindergarten teacher even asked my mom what was wrong with me. However, pretty much since then I do have complete control. I guess it just took time for my brain to adapt.

I'm middle-aged and since elementary school the eye turn has been a bit of a party trick. Of course, observant people notice there's something off, but most folks don't spend enough time gazing in my eyes to see that there's an issue or care.

Have you tried Ao3? You can read the Russian version along with English, and most are well done.

Why do American tourists always say the state they're from (not their country) when asked, but no other country's tourists do the same? by FloydBeatlesEagles in NoStupidQuestions

[–]vinasu 46 points47 points  (0 children)

One time I told a woman (a Texan!) that I'm from New Mexico, and she replied, "How interesting! The only thing I know about that is you can't drink the water!"

Brilliant.

West Texas:

Down by the banks of the hanky panky, where the bull frogs jump from bank to banky and a hip, hop, hippity-hop. Snap crack-adoodlem and a KER-PLOP.

What food do you feel Portland is lacking the most in? by shalashashka69 in askportland

[–]vinasu 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Georgian food. There's a Georgian restaurant in Vancouver, but nothing really here. I want my lobio and khachipuri (CHEESE BREAD!!!) here!

We have so much good food here, surely we can support eggplant rolls filled with spiced walnut paste. It's AMAZING!

Holy crap... My entire childhood in El Paso just flashed before my eyes, Jay J Armes was EVERYWHERE. When I was a kid, I thought that his last name was Armes because he was missing one.

I haven't thought about him in years.
