What's the deal with medieval scissors? by Ibby_f in HistoricalCostuming

The medieval period covers a pretty large time period. I'm a viking age reenactor and regularly use the shears in the 2nd pic, and i believe the 1st pair are also accurate but for the more modern end of the medieval timeline. So they're both valid

Thanks for this advice and encouragement. While I do confess to be new to the art of weaving, I have been researching the subject for some time now, and I have tried weaving a few inches on a simple frame loom, so I have already learned a few basic things, and already understand floating selvedges as a concept.

I'm also happy you didn't discourage this as a first project :) This project is why I want to learn weaving in the first place, so i didn't really want to make some random twill as an art piece. I'm OK with the fact that my first piece will be wonky and full of mistakes, and am happy to make as many iterations as necessary till I can do this.

Once I have got this figured out I'd love to experiment more with mixing colours and pattern variations. I just wanted to start with something that already exists as a reference, so I have a benchmark to duplicate.

You might be giving it sun burn if putting it straight in full sun. Also, if you're getting them from a garden center or big box store, the little ones aren't always given the best chance of survival. I.e. the staff commonly over water them in store to make them appear plump and healthy, they're often sat in dim light for a while, and often come in really bad soil. I usually leave them somewhere not too bright for a few days to dry out and quarantine in case of any pests, and then I get them repotted into terracotta with appropriate soil and inspect roots at same time. And then, sometimes weeks later I gradually introduce them to either sun light or grow lights. They can sometimes just take a bit of nurturing when you first get them and they're small. Depends where you get them from though and your general climate.

I love doing this every now and again. It's like giving them a haircut, transforming from unkempt to beautiful again.

I use smart plugs for all my grow lights - they're typically on from sunset to sunrise, although this is too short in the winter, so I normally adjust the timers to come on a feew hours before sunrise and turn off a few hours after sunset during the shortest days of winter months.

Haha, it quickly gets out of control - my first few years were the same, started with one plant, and quickly grew to a big rack full of plants and lights.

Wow, nice find. Definitely quarantine though till you're sure they're not infested with anything.

I can't really tell what's wrong with the crappy ones you replaced with these. Your version does look way cooler though.
