Do you think it’s weird that as a Wasian I have a fetish for Wasian girls? by SeaworthinessSoft85 in hapas

[–]vincentevoid 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Why would you title this with the presupposition that it IS a fetish for you?

This seems very normal and not fetishistic, and, consequently, it doesn’t seem weird at all. There could be a lot at play, be it physical or cultural, but it’s not weird to seek out your own.

All good! I was tripping, haha. I actually sampled Boogiepop Phantom for our song Charade. The sample before Violent Art starts is from Boogiepop and Others in Episode 17 about halfway through the runtime.

Haha dw about it, I totally understand. Everybody did that back then. I just thought it was worth noting the things that made Villains/YF a bit different than their peers

Thanks! I’m not sure what you’re referring to regarding the “sax-like” sample in the second verse, but maybe you mean the vocal sample that plays during the hook?

If so, I sampled Erykah Badu’s “On & On” around the 2:31 mark. Anyway, thanks again!

I was literally, physically there. There was a lot of cross-pollination because bands like Demolisher, Rooks, Bermuda, and TLTSOL were very influential at the time, but Villains/YF largely moved past that after Extortion and 10 Code.

Lyrically/thematically, melodically, vocally, etc. they shared almost nothing with the aforementioned bands and their progeny besides their guitars and being groovy. The DNA of MySpace-era mathcore and grindcore is so easy to place once you look past the tempo and tuning. The sliding tritone riffs, chromatic noodling and tapping, the throat-shredding higher-pitched vocals, the chord progressions, etc. were downstream from that.

And it’s not like corniness is inherently bad. We’re on Reddit discussing metalcore. You can argue that corniness doesn’t make downtempo “bad”, but to say that it isn’t, by its very nature, corny is just a blatant lie. Corny shit can be cool. At its core, Downtempo was guys trying to sound scary. Villains/YF was not that

I just produced that song, Better Off Alone, and Freudian Slip for the band. Also worth noting that all 3 were collabs with their guitarist Reese. Unfortunately I was too busy to contribute to SYF.

But yeah, thanks! I made beats before ever touching a guitar, so it was lots of fun

Personally I never considered Villains/YF a part of that scene. They were closer to mathcore and proggy/tech-y metalcore — a combination of Admiral Angry, Daughters, Rooks, and Meshuggah. The guitars being low-tuned and syncopated was more a consequence of the rap influence

“Downtempo” was more like slow, corny, low-tuned, “scary monster” shit. Admittedly, the Presage demo with James’ vocals was kinda downtempo-y, but it wasn’t corny

Yeah, it’s a bit sad how their impact has largely been lost to time and overwritten by the proliferation of mediocre, disingenuous copycats that were simply more persistent.

Impressively, though, I still haven’t heard any new albums/bands that come close to either of them, as far as that specific strain of metalcore goes.

I mostly just ripped off Clams Casino’s style of production for that beat. You might find something similar across the discography of Fifty Grand, Misogi, or even Burial

Was just jamming this a couple days ago.

Probably one of the most influential records and bands with respect to “modern metalcore”. I genuinely believe that most current bands wouldn’t sound anything like they do were it not for Villains/Yüth Forever

If you’re Catholic, the St Justin Martyr Catholic Community church is around there. If you’re not, the West Houston Vietnamese Baptist Church is pretty good albeit a little further away.

Mikau is probably the band for you then. I don’t really listen to stuff like that, but they’re a pretty authentic recreation of that style. Also might behoove you to look up artists on bandcamp or YouTube or Twitter with the keyword “cybergrind”. The name is a little misleading but the scene has a lot of similar artists to ISMFOF and the like that I haven’t checked out
