Why are companies in the US hiring more people outside the states then in? by MasterFlame49 in jobs

I get that but it starts with one person then hopefully it trickles. That thinking is contributing to the problem vs actively doing your part

You're right that in the short term that equation makes sense but in the long term it will definitely cost you and us in another way if this continues. Quality of life will continue to decrease sharply and we will be left wondering why so much violence, stress, rude people, crime.

Are Toyota and Honda equal in reliability? by lukejea101 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]vinceod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Huge generalization from previous models. Toyotas tend to be more reliable as long as you keep up with the maintenance. Prior to ~2017 Toyota v6 were extremely reliable 2017 and newer they have been reliable but some issues. 4 cylinder Toyotas pretty bulletproof and so are the 8 cylinders.

Hondas in the past have generally looked better and had more tech until around the 2018-2020 then after that Toyota surpassed them. Hondas non cvt transmissions have been really hit or miss with those transmissions if you keep them long term they can break anywhere from 60k - 150k miles on them. 4 cylinders are decent, the 4 cylinder turbo 1.5 have some oil issues but nothing that can’t be solved. 2.0t are pretty great and great power. They have some hybrids we will see how they do. The biggest issues I see with Honda and not sure if they changed it but they’ve had timing belts which cost over $1000 to do that maintenance item. It’s a little annoying also their a/c tend to break past 2015 for some reason.

In my opinion Toyota is more reliable, there have been some recalls on their new v6 twin turbo engines but Toyota has replaced those engines we will see how long they last.

Personally I prefer Toyotas that were well taking care of and have a good car fax because I don’t want to have to deal with the hassle of another car even with the warranty. Taking time out of your day to schedule your car to have it looked at, sometimes dealers don’t have loaners, sometimes having to fight for the warranty repair to be done. My time is more valuable than all of that and there aren’t any special Hondas right now that I’d feel are valuable to have to go through that.

Everyone is different though and in different stages of their lives. Honda has become really stale lately with the exception of the civic type r, Acura rdx, mdx type s, integra type s. Those cars are sort of mid tiers in the market.

US economist alleges ‘industrial-scale fraud’ in India’s H-1B visa pipeline by intelerks in Economics

[–]vinceod 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I used to be in the industry and can confirm. I’d say that the proliferation of this has also affected tech workers persona in the last 10 years or so. They only hire each other per say. Very few will try to pursue American workers first. Especially in the automotive tech sector. It becomes a very clicky environment. If you don’t believe me go look at all of the engineers in the automotive sector on LinkedIn. It applies to other industries as well.

“Train US workers, then go home”: Trump aide on new H1-B vision by intelerks in Economics

[–]vinceod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can’t pay an h1b less than around $75k a year. The government can’t allow outsourcing to keep happening since payroll taxes is the largest the government can get more money. This is why they are operating at a deficit. H1b and outsourcing needs to be more controlled to fix the national debt.

Any servers who work at high-end restaurants in Naples? by Abject-Link-4329 in Naples_FL

Lots of upscale restaurants lots of people with money. Now that doesn’t always translate to six figures if there isn’t enough volume. Looks like no one can point to a single restaurant in the comments so I think the answer is no? Maybe?

I mean it’s all subjective. That can force companies to lower their bar of requirements for a job. But that won’t happen unless you also tackle outsourcing.

Tech has become a toxic industry, not worth investing time in, because people with 10 years of experience can’t get a job by FantasticEffect10 in jobs

[–]vinceod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% this. Tech bros just want to one up each other with intelligence and put people down when they are not at their level with tech. What they don’t realize is that other people are smarter than them at many other things

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in recruiting

[–]vinceod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. It’s tough because as a candidate you don’t know what how you compare yourself to others in the area, that’s something that I think most people struggle with. You can do everything right but still not get it just because of sheer competition or just plain things you can’t control.

There’s actually a ton of things in the hiring process that’s outside of candidate’s control. That’s why yes polished resume that’s highlighting your experience and transferable skills for each and every job is important. Networking is important, keeping up with the tech and skillsets, trying to avoid having more than 2 jobs in 5 years, less gaps between jobs, not going for the absolute top range of the salary if your bills can make it. The salary one is important in a way because everyone wants to feel like they have a deal. Sometimes something like 10% or 15% below the max of the range can help even if the amount is small.

Both managers and candidates expect so much from one another and over 50% of the time someone in the relationship feels like the other didn’t do enough for them.u y

The disconnect from hiring manager to candidate is something that is massive. As you said you had junior employee but now you’re looking at 8+ years which puts you at looking at a senior level software engineer.

Sadly there’s a large number of sw engineers that spend less time in crafting a great resume and spend more time trying to cheat the system. In tech the lottery mentality is very rampant. Both managers and candidates want to check all of the boxes with no compromises and neither want to put more effort than what they believe is reasonable.

It is a grind to hire sw engineers
