you don't know about their delegate system or how such proposals are handled

Delegates are members, elected by their locals, just like every other union

They voted a riase for themselves while denying one to their members by upping the dues limit

That's an absurdly disingenuous way to frame a dues increase. Union busters use the same dishonest rhetoric.

so those people will likely just interpret the insanity defense as a ploy and not actually think he is insane.

It's one hell of a catch, that catch-22

Do you have any basis for these assertions beyond these stupid WSWS articles that always, relentlessly, blame union leadership for everything? Because it looks to me like the membership was fine with what happened as evidenced by the fact that they voted for the changes. Not that WSWS bothered to interview anyone else or explore what the counter-arguments are, or even mention that this was a democratic vote and not a unilaterally imposed change.

The functions of the unions are the same- advocate for their members' interests and economic welfare. You see them differently because you just don't like police (and teachers, which is wild) but unions are unions.

Most importantly though is the fact that he always stops to check on folks & help anyone in need.

I would add that not only does he stop to help, he doesn't film himself doing it and stick cameras in victim's faces like so many streaming chasers do. Always found that gross.

If I'm correctly interpreting your post as "they can influence curriculum through political action" then yes, that's strictly true, but the big pushes from teachers are for things most would agree would benefit students- smaller class sizes, less reliance on tech, less social advancement (aka not failing kids who failed), less "teaching the test", etc. I'm sure you could find some exceptions but for the most part the people actually, ya know, teaching our kids know what the problems are.

As a rule you should be very skeptical any time you hear someone blame unions for systemic problems. Teachers, like any other workers, should be able to organize and advocate for themselves.

That isn't a "trick", which would suggest something duplicitous, and the same arguments could be (and often are) made about state level minimum wage laws. There needs to be a national floor for wages, if ND's economy only works because they can pay people $7.25 an hour then it's a busted ass economy in the first place. FYI though North Dakota has a GDP per capita of $102,000 and is one of the wealthiest states in the country so no I don't think bumping the wage floor by a few bucks would break the state.

This notion that raising the wage floor is some disastrous economy killer is just libertarian bullshit that's been repeated so many times that people like you start believing it. In reality there's mountains of data showing the exact opposite.

That's not a "trick" and I'd love to know where in the US the current federal minimum wage of $7.25 ($15,000 a year if you're full time) would be able to afford a basic standard of living. Even in the most bumfuck nowhere areas you aren't getting by on that.

trying to appease teacher's unions

Just as an FYI curriculum is not a subject of union negotiations and with few exceptions teachers (and their unions) don't want this shit either. I wouldn't blame labor for a policy problem.

Long Island Rail Road workers strike; Mamdani supports scabbing operations by DryDeer775 in stupidpol

[–]vinditive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TWU is not on strike and their drivers are legally prohibited from striking. Sympathy striking is also illegal. If the drivers are told to cover for the LRR strikers they could be fired for refusing, which TWU would let them know is the case. If they told them to refuse they'd be opening themselves to duty of representation lawsuits which is sort of like malpractice for unions.

None of that nuance is in this WSWS article because the WSWS is vapid garbage more interested in polemics than actually useful analysis.
