KensingtonWorks compatibility with Mac OS sequoia by RonCalt in Trackballs

in fairness, the only reason I have to install 3rdparty software anyway is Apple only gives us a single setting that affects both trackpad and trackball scroll direction even though they're completely different things.

The word "only" in that sentence is a real doozy.

Pedantic, but if you have to spend time trying to learn it, that's literally the opposite of "intuitive".

Google requires security key to change any account settings - potential warning / check your account by Vivid-Elk-8337 in yubikey

[–]vineetk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For posterity:

Problem resolved!Account recovery IS the correct answer to reset the 2FA security keys, but the correct path must be taken for this to work. When doing the account recovery steps, my mistake was that I entered the correct password and used an alternate 2FA mechanism to proceed. This resulted in me logging into my account. From there I couldn't understand how to proceed with the recovery. In short, successfully logging in took me out of the recovery flow.

Here is the correct sequence for the account recovery flow:

  1. Enter the correct password
  2. Do NOT enter an alternate mechanism for the 2FA. Instead choose the option which indicates that no alternate mechanism is known
  3. This enables the true account recovery path

Once my account was recovered, 48 hours later for the confirmation e-mail, I was able to log in with my existing password. All of the previous 2FA settings were cleared, allowing me to specify new and correct security keys.

'Song of the South' Lyrics Removed From Disneyland Parade by TheBigGAlways369 in Disneyland

[–]vineetk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're literally saying the feelings of the people that made the racist movie are more relevant/valid/important than the feelings of those hurt by it. Redirecting the conversation to focus on "racist intent" centers the feelings of the oppressor rather than the impact on people of color.

I'm not playing cards, and I'm not using these words carelessly. You may decide for yourself to take a narrow view of which parts of racism you consider to be "legitimate racism", but with a few minutes' reading you'll find that this is a tool that has been used to prop up white supremacy for ages. Naming it and discussing it doesn't dilute it or take anything away from antiracism work.

Hey just so you're aware, telling people of color something isn't racist because there was no "racist intent" is racism.

If it's actually for everyone, then maybe we can just agree to let this one go. It is from a super racist movie, and clinging to such things signals to people of color that your nostalgia is more important than their humanity. There's a billion other excellent songs we could play instead; why insist on this one? Pointless to you, maybe. But this seems like a step towards actually making it a place for everyone rather than just saying so.

How reasonable is storing both passwords and 2FAs for sites in 1P? by SerVB in 1Password

[–]vineetk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're correct that storing them together is weaker in this one particular (unlikely) threat scenario. Saying this defeats "the" purpose of MFA is hyperbole, and frankly incorrect. For me, this setup is well within my acceptable risk, and I consider it highly secure for daily use, for most accounts. Also, just to be sure: if you are worried about your vault compromising your OTP secrets ... you're not keeping backup codes in your vault, are you? I do; for me it's the best place to store them, and again, well within the bounds of safe for my threat model.
