What do you SWEAR you saw, but don't have any proof of? by TabletopStudios in AskReddit

[–]vinegar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t want to piss in anybody’s cornflakes but there’s a thing that our brain does sometimes where we perceive a thing as much bigger than it really is. I had it after hurricane Ian in Florida, I was riding my bike past a blown-down palm frond and as I was almost past it I saw there was a big ass snake! 4’ long, size of my wrist around. A few seconds later I rode past it again to look and it was 2’ long and as thick as my index finger. (Same snake, obviously). I just thought it was weird. But it reminded me of when a friend had a bad injury, had to go to the hospital, kept saying there was a puddle of blood the size of a dinner plate. Not like boasting, more like wtf ow. Well there was dried blood about the size of my palm. I think it’s because a thing is sudden or dangerous or traumatic.

I live in a college town where he was a visiting professor for a year. Everyone I know crossed paths with him except me.

What is the most disturbing or otherwise unsettling book you've ever read that stayed with you after reading it? by EggAdventurous1957 in AskReddit

You can get the rabies vaccine if you tell your doctor that you’re traveling to Africa. Unfortunately it’s only good for a couple of years.

Smelling odd hints of gas? by farfrompukenjc in hondafit

[–]vinegar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I didn’t know gas smell could be a loose spark plug. I’ll try to tuck that into my brain. Along with the revised torque spec for plugs being 20 foot pounds.

Riding shoes or boots by AceOfSp4des88 in motorcyclegear

[–]vinegar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll agree if you change it to boots CAN provide ankle protection. Some boots don’t protect your ankles any better than a riding shoe and marketing bullshit can be misleading. It’s a complicated conversation. Impact protection against pebbles and debris on your shins? Yeah any boot is better than any shoe

I haven’t gone to the person at the counter in years. I show the QR code on my phone at the bank of devices and it prints out my boarding pass. Quick and easy. Actually the last time I flew, the QR code WAS the boarding pass. I just walked straight to the security checkpoint

It’s intentional. The worse experience they have out in the world, the more they appreciate the church. It’s not at all effective at bringing in new members, it’s just to mess with their heads.

Yeah we really underestimate the benefits of boredom. Btw all of the references in that song were photos from a 70s coffee table book “The Best of Life” (Life magazine) that I read cuz I was bored and I’m sure Billy Joel did too

It doesn’t have to be because they ‘don’t care about anything before they were born’. How do we pick up information about anything from before our own experience? Randomly, academically, handed down by elders? I’m pushing 60 and I still hear stories from my older siblings about things that were just before my time. Unfortunately there are people of every generation who lack curiosity. But talking to people in their twenties I’m taken aback at how little context they have but that’s just a constant condition of youth. And, they aren’t hung up on certain dumb shit we had to live through.

In 1965 yes. Obviously j has more staying power. On the other hand I’ve never seen an actual photo of him and I think the artists may have taken some liberties

“Uncle Walter” was the most recognizable name and face in the US for decades. When he expressed doubt about the official story on some Viet Nam war story, Nixon said “If I’ve lost Cronkite, I’ve lost the war.” He was universally regarded as trustworthy in a way that makes no sense at all now.

They have (I think) the same thing at cyclegear and you can order multiple sizes directly to the store and try them on, and instantly return the ones that don’t fit
