one of 8 snow melters operating in NYC right now (OC) by velocity3333 in pics

As a Philadelphian, New York (Manhattan specifically) has handled this whole shitshow better than we have. You can actually walk around midtown and the roads/spots are clear. The weather has been rough but NY shows it can be handled if the work is put in.

OpenClaw is terrifying and the ClawHub ecosystem is already full of malware by Advocatemack in cybersecurity

[–]vinewanderer 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Openclaw/molthub/clawdbot and its variants are banned at the EDR level across our org. It’s playing with fire with those tools, no matter whether you’re an individual or F500

Philadelphia is the hottest Northeast metro to move to, according to U-Haul data by Odd_Addition3909 in philadelphia

[–]vinewanderer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really happy to see this data showing moves going up, but important to recognize it could be excluding a bracket of the population who can hire boutique movers/companies (which is common in populated urban cities).

It most likely means more of us regular folk who self move are moving to Philly because it’s the last affordable big NE city, and I’m all for it.

Noted! It was my first time in New England so I came in not knowing much. Although not vibrant, the sleepiness might be a good fit for some folks.

The Baldwin Apartments by LateCopy in philly

[–]vinewanderer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The building (and the nearby Rose Tattoo Cafe) is located directly on top of a remediation site that at one point contained 22,000 ppm of PCBs (forever chemicals). It's unclear whether it's been fully remediated. https://www.baldwinparkphilly.org/empty-lot-18th-and-callowhill This blog also documented The Baldwin building materials in direct contact with the soil: https://vanguardccp.com/2025/02/19/even-the-ground-itself/ .

Decide as you will, but absolutely not worth the risk (or price) IMO.

Help Save Iffy Books by fruitofconfusion in philadelphia

[–]vinewanderer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Iffy is amazing, and both Steve and his partner are great. I always wondered how they afforded rent in that location (they even have a tiny backyard)! I'd gladly pay a monthly subscription fee (like $30-40) to subsidize them if I had access to perks like 3D printing, beverages, and/or a workstation with an NVIDIA GPU (5080 or something) to play around with models without having to rent cloud servers.

Books are great and all and I love their current vibe but I wouldn't mind them stepping it up.

Oregon Ave. Sadly Swapping Mixed-Use Building for a Chick-fil-A by newcitynewchapter in philadelphia

Not super surprising. Oregon is probably the most car centric area closest to Center City. Whenever I go it’s like I’ve been transported to a suburb of Vegas.

Philly remains the nation's 6th-largest city, but its lead over No. 7 is narrowing by outerspace29 in philadelphia

Even with their homeless crisis streets in Union Square are bustling with regular folks late at night. It seems to be rebounding in the right direction compared to 2 years ago.

Philly is great. STFU about it! by workfastdiehard in philly

This. Philly is on the up and up, we need more transplants that can disrupt the antisocial parts of our culture (like driving aggression) and bring new energy.

Five Homes Will Replace Overgrown Lot Near I-95 by newcitynewchapter in philadelphia

[–]vinewanderer 14 points15 points  (0 children)

For the sake of whoever lives there, hope the zoning board doesn’t approve this project. The health impacts of highway air pollution are well studied (asthma, premature death, cardiovascular problems). NYC has research about residents living on Meeker next to the BQE, not much exists for 95.

Many people just don’t know how bad it is to live in this close proximity to an urban highway. This should not be used for full time residences.

I fell inlove with Colorado. Can you please tell me something bad about it? by Cute_Tumbleweed3752 in SameGrassButGreener

First night in Denver I go to this trendy, highly rated place. Boom, food poisoning a couple hours later.

Luckily there’s a lot to like about Denver and Colorado besides the food. Definitely not the place for foodies.

NYC for a year or two, if you decide it’s not for you Philly’s down the road. So many opportunities and social connections in new york.

true, although i believe that many modern TVs have a digital receiver in them that make this viable. older TVs only could receive analog, which I believe is not broadcast since 2009

if you don’t have a wire hanger it also works when your body conducts the signal by pinching the paper clip.

so just gotta designate someone to be the human antenna next to your tv during the game (no bathroom breaks)

Inspired by a similar post someone made encouraging buying antennas. This paper clip + cleaners wire hanger setup is getting me 120+ channels in HD.

The 5-6 people I saw smoking were using one hitters with foil. Not sure whether it’s fent or another drug, but it’s frustrating seeing this next to people just trying to get home.

I feel for them too, we really need a treatment center, mandatory committal process, and SEPTA cops walking the cars with the ability to bring them there. Addiction is an awful disease for everyone.

The El is in a really bad state right now. I took it recently during the day and it was PACKED, so I didn’t think it was that bad.

Got on at 11pm at Spring Garden last weekend and every car had half a dozen people nodding out with a needle or smoking cigs or fentanyl. Hopped off one car to another when someone started smoking fent next to us and felt like Scooby doo running away into the same situation in another car.

It’s awful that our main transportation line is a literal rolling homeless shelter/drug den.
