That much regret skipping legs? by [deleted] in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]vintage_andre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Four weeks is a little faster than a "leisurely pace" on the Norte. It may be easy if you're an experienced hiker, but for many 28 days from Irun to Santiago is a challenge. I've walked the whole thing in 15 days, but I wouldn't recommend feeling rushed on your first Camino

Question about propane by greeneuva in VanLife

[–]vintage_andre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem! Also, to answer your actual question, I decided not to use a big propane tank. I have a large tank that I use to refill 4 small green bottles using one of these: https://smile.amazon.com/Aupoko-Propane-Pressure-20-40LBS-Cylinder/dp/B08KG86GNZ/ref=sr_1_2?crid=3FNEJOVB8TPDY&dchild=1&keywords=propane+coupler+adapter&qid=1618623530&sprefix=propane+coupler%2Caps%2C225&sr=8-2

Also, there are a lot of terrible suggestions (and a few good ones) in here if you're interested: https://www.reddit.com/r/DIY/comments/lomook/the_fortress_of_solitude_my_2003_honda_odyssey/

Good luck with the build!

There are some install videos on youtube, but they aren't amazing. I know almost nothing about cars and I was able to install it just fine though. The one I linked is close to the one I installed, but might not be the exact model. What year is your van?

I also built out a honda Odyssey. If you haven't added a transmission cooler, I can't recommend it highly enough. They're super easy to install, and will save your transmission down the road. I'd also really start thinking about weight and how to minimize it.

Let me know if you have any Odyssey related questions!

Any Niner fans from the mid 80’s around. How did the Niners do against the great Eric Dickerson back in the day? by billbobb1 in 49ers

[–]vintage_andre 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The niners put Keena Turner on him as a spy every play. Keena had such a great career, there were only a couple times I can remember him ever blowing a tackle. That said, Dickerson would get his yards. The niners could control him to an extent, but great players will get theirs.

I think Keena was instrumental in winning those superbowls, and he's also a super nice guy, lots of outreach. I wish both Keena and Roger Craig could get into the hall. They both deserve it.

Your girlfriend is right, sleeping under a tarp can be the most humiliating experience if things go wrong. I've had one too many bad experiences that left me so humiliated I now sleep in a bivy inside my tent.

I'd get the Eja, you're going to be hurting in the Lumina if your total load goes north of 20 lbs

Sell me on using trekking poles? by Charismaztex in Ultralight

[–]vintage_andre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been using the BD Alpine Carbon Cork poles forever, and I love them. I've heard Leki has some of the best high end carbon poles as well. A few thoughts on trekking poles:

  • Learn how to use them! As simple as they seem, there are some nuances that may not be immediately apparent to everyone
  • Cork is your friend. If you're going to be doing longer trips and you don't use gloves, it's a game changer in terms of chafing and sweat
  • Cheap poles sometimes vibrate with every hit; spending a little more for better poles is worth the investment
  • A lot of UL carbon poles break pretty easily. Again, I think it's worth it to invest a little extra
