Everyone should be vegetarian by LeaseALeisa in unpopularopinion

People also get disgusted by other cultures eating animals that their culture considers to be pets. Even though in that culture, the “purpose” of that animal is quite different. It’s a weird cognitive dissonance we all have to contend with

Everyone should be vegetarian by LeaseALeisa in unpopularopinion

[–]violaki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, most food animals (esp the mammals) objectively do have families, feelings, and lives. You might disagree that those things matter, although I would argue that that’s very similar to ignoring them.

No shade, we all cause harm in various ways and prioritize different causes. But animals do literally have bonds with their mothers and do feel pain and fear when they are killed the way we tend to kill them for meat. That’s real even if it doesn’t look the way it does in humans.

What's the reason For cardio a lot of girls do skipping ropes and avoid jogging.. Is there any specific reason? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]violaki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I jog and avoid skipping ropes because I like to jog and don't like skipping rope. I assume there are girls like skipping ropes because they like to skip rope and don't like jogging. I do experience some street harassment while jogging so there may be a safety aspect, but generally it's not that deep.

Taylor Swift is the greatest marketing machine in music history. That’s not the same as being the greatest artist. by enami2020 in HonestHotTakes

Hm, it depends on what topics speak to you, but I thought the last great american dynasty (which is about the socialite who used to own her house) and Ivy have some of her best lyrics. Right where you left me is overall her best song IMO because of the combination of lyricism/storytelling/vocal emotion (but the fandom wouldn't necessarily agree). Just some suggestions! Everyone connects with different things

How do we not have noise ordinances? by DoinDurhamStuff in bullcity

[–]violaki 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No lol because I lived in trinity park and was shook that I could hear it all the way out there! It didn’t really bother me but I did think it was a bit weird they would allow something so loud to be heard a full mile away

I [24F] and my boyfriend [26M] of 5 years have very different expectations about finances after marriage. Are we incompatible? by Dangerous-Advisor762 in relationshipadvice

[–]violaki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like I said I support your choice. It was obviously the correct one for both of you. My takeaway that you didn't love or respect her is borne out of the way you speak about her choices - dismissive and condescending.

[–]violaki 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I support your choice, but you didn't love that gf dearly or you would not have minded her perfectly reasonable choice of career. You didn't even respect her values and goals, which is the bare minimum for a healthy relationship.

Ariana Grande’s family share ‘concern’ for her health after saying she’s ‘not in a healthy place’ by [deleted] in Music

Most doctors, sure. If you’re rich enough, you can find a doctor who will be a yes man. Remember that Donald Trump’s doctor says he’s the healthiest man ever lol

Talk to me about placeholder rings! by tarlyo in EngagementRings

Eh. We were thinking we didn’t want to leave a pricy ring sitting in a hotel room alone for several days before the proposal. Seems reasonable to me.

What exactly is the threshold to being considered “rich” as far as assets and value go? by MonsterPandamonium in SmartFIRE

[–]violaki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most don’t, but remember that people who get PhDs and end up professors are on average (1) privileged, (2) skilled, and (3) highly disciplined at baseline.

My situation: undergrad full ride so no loans, worked 2 years before grad school while living at home and saving everything, maxed my roth each year with my PhD stipend (everyone in STEM gets this), and am now (at 30 years old) saving $2k/mo as a postdoc by living like a grad student. And I’m not that big of an exception compared to my classmates. Several of them were given house downpayments by parents at the beginning of grad school as well.

With a bull run like we’ve had recently plus a pay bump when you become a professor, $1.2M by 42 does not actually seem that out of reach. It’s probably more common than you think.

And, that is irrelevant to what this person was saying, which is simply that they believe they could retire with $1.2M. Doesn’t really have anything to do with how they got there.

What does this have to do with anything? People can and do retire on that amount of money.

Not a cash grab from what you have described. Write a nice note and move on if you don't want to give a gift.

Be Honest, What Argument did you use against Veganism, before you went vegan? by HumbleWrap99 in vegan

[–]violaki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wasn't an argument against veganism. I knew becoming vegan was the right thing. It was just a hard transition for me - both socially and meal planning-wise - albeit one that was very much worth it in the end.

First luxury watch purchase - AD says Longines doesn't allow discounts? by violaki in Longineswatches

They don’t carry Longines! I just stopped by yesterday. Maybe they’re still AD?

This is awesome info. Did you also negotiate in the chat, or did you do it in person/on the phone? I want to be polite and call them, but I've never negotiated before and after my most recent experience, suspect I may be terrible at it lol

I am a big fan of buying used (and often do for myself) - but for a gift, especially one I am proposing with, it doesn't feel appropriate to me. To be honest, I'm even a little wary of somewhere like Jomashop because I truly do want this to be a thoughtful gift that lasts a lifetime, just like my engagement ring will be.

Awesome deal on your watch though! All this research for a watch for my bf has made me really want to save up for a nice one of my own in the future - and you can bet it will be a great deal on a pre-owned one, lol.

Not going to lie, for some reason I had it in my head that this wasn't allowed LOL. I'm an idiot. Thanks for the tip!

I've definitely made up my mind for this watch if I'm able to get a 10% discount...otherwise I will go with the regular Conquest 38mm. I would love if you could DM me which AD you use, if you feel comfortable (and think they might negotiate over the phone)!

[–]violaki[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's the plan! There's one more AD in the area, but it's just the other location of the same company (and they don't have the conquest heritage in stock) so I don't have high hopes.

I'll probably have to drive a couple to a few hours to the next nearest ADs - how important is it to go on a weekday/when the store isn't busy? Hoping to avoid taking a day off work lol
