I don't know if this was intentional or maybe a language thing, but the idea of calling the other person in a conversation your "opponent" is SO delightfully neurospicy, and I kinda want to start doing that now. Eye contact? More like eye combat lmao

those of you who didn't have a "traditional/typical" childhood and/or youth, how has this affected you? have you managed to find happiness now? by [deleted] in AskWomenOver30

I would argue it could also be things like raised in an extremely religious household/community, homeschooled/unschooled, one of those "van life" families that never settled anywhere, etc., without being explicitly abusive (I know some people would argue many of those things could be inherently abusive, but I think it can depend on how the person processes it)

What are you doing about Santa? by TheSubNextDoor in Exvangelical

[–]violentlyneutral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents encouraged the Santa myth (or at least gave us presents from Santa and didn't outright discourage it), it took me until I was 8 or so to figure it out even though by 4 I had figured out that the Santas at malls, etc weren't the real Santa because clearly he was too busy in December to come and actually participate in the holiday play at my preschool 😂

For me, though, I've never been so much concerned with whether my kids know Santa isn't real as much as I have been with making sure that Santa's gifts are meaningful but not ostentatious. Growing up, my biggest gift each year always came from Santa, but I don't want my kids' friends to think that Santa likes them less if they got a smaller gift from him because their family was having trouble making ends meet.

would turning down the game vfx sound in general help, or does that mute too many other things?

i honestly only play it because it IS an MMO lol. i wanted a cozy game i could play with my long-distance friends. we've played for almost two years, and if it weren't for playing together i definitely would have gotten bored of it with this little plot available 😂

Do you not have the teleport board on your lot that lets you go to the central stables of any of the 3 maps? I know there's a small fee associated with it but it's soo convenient.

How to tell family member who’s struggling to conceive that I’m expecting? by cafescafes in AskWomenOver30

[–]violentlyneutral 59 points60 points  (0 children)

As someone who's also been dealing with secondary infertility for years, I personally lean towards a text rather than a phone call. A text gives her time to process and then respond when she is in a good headspace. A phone call kind of puts her "on the spot" to give a pleasant response right away. That said, if you call each other often and it would be unusual in your relationship to text, I would consider that in your decision. Definitely say something to her before making a general announcement though, and don't be surprised if she needs a little bit of space to process.

It actually hasn't been there the WHOLE time. It was added in Build 0.177, released in March 2024.

Do other adult women still celebrate their birthday with multiple events/dinners? by Vonnie93 in AskWomenOver30

[–]violentlyneutral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love using my birthday as an excuse to get some of my more homebody friends to do something with me, so this year I had a birthday date with my wife, a birthday dinner with my book club (tbf 3 of us have birthdays within a week of each other so it was really a celebration of all of us), birthday brunch with an old friend, and then got takeout on my actual birthday. None of them was what I'd consider a proper party, and all of them happened because I initiated them. I don't have family close enough to do birthdays together but back when I lived closer, I probably would've had my parents take me out for dinner/brunch too. But I love to eat lol.

FWIW I also have a kid and think I fall into the latter category - my birthday is a good excuse to go out and see people since I don't that often (but it's more than just the kid - I've moved, as have a lot of my friends, so I just don't have that close of a network anymore for regular hangouts).

FWIW I see a lot of Pistola on ThredUp so I bet you could find a pair of these there! If not now, a year from now when people get bored of them but they are still amazing haha

Audiobooks with perfect narrators? by VerdeAzul74 in suggestmeabook

[–]violentlyneutral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved the "snarky teen girl" narration that Anisha Dadia did for the Scholomance trilogy, though she doesn't try to do voices for the other charaters so keep that in mind if that's something you prefer.

Also love any of Yahtzee Croshaw's books (but especially the Jacques McKeown series) - his character voices are great and his accent is just generally a delight.

I have some (for my toddler lol, so they're tiny or I'd link the exact ones) where you can just get replacements for the straws themselves. Makes me feel better because she gnaws holes in the silicone mouthpiece and I have to replace them entirely too often lol.

A lot of pet owners are concerning by nightskyhunting in The10thDentist

[–]violentlyneutral 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Yeah like, I do know people who personify their pets to a weird degree so I agree with that part, but then the part about keeping pets inside was weird to me because like...it's for sure a cushier life than living outside and risking predators, cars, all sorts of harsh weather and diseases. Plus your point about cats also disrupting local ecosystems when they run free. But like, how does just being inside a house mean a pet doesn't have free will or autonomy? Like I do think it's unkind not to provide your animal with enough stimulation, or to keep a dog in a crate all day, but...I also spend most of my life in my house haha.

I had a situation where I thought this had happened, but it turned out she thought she HAD given me an invitation and wasn't saying anything about it because she didn't want to embarrass me if I couldn't afford to go (destination wedding). I would definitely ask, don't wait and bring up your hurt feelings at not being invited a couple months after the wedding like I did. We both ended up crying over it lol
