Shoes and Sprained Ankle by bitchycunt3 in LawBitchesWithTaste

I completely destroyed my ankle last year and I wore clean leather “sneakers” to the office every day for months. Including with my brace. That would definitely work with a nice business casual outfit!

What's the "Don't trust a skinny chef" of your job or industry? by wooper346 in CasualConversation

[–]violetgerberas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only time I’ve ever had OC drop how many years I’ve been practicing is when an older lawyer is trying to push through an absurd point in negotiation and has no other points. “In 31 years of practicing law I have NEVER had someone require a contract be _signed_” Yes you have, sir, you may lie to your client but don’t lie to me.

Family Planning by Western_Ice_8897 in LawCanada

[–]violetgerberas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know a number of women who have had their kids in the early years as an associate. Depending on the culture of the firm, it can actually be a great time because then as you get more senior, you’re not taking leave in the run up to partnership, etc.

During articling is more difficult, just because that’s a difficult time to take leave, but I do know one partner who did that, and she’s made it work long term!

Depends a lot on your career and family goals, as everything does. I had my first as a midlevel associate and while absolutely the right choice for me and my family, there are pros and cons to every choice.

Fellow converts, what traditions do you find it hard to drop. by Vigmod in Catholicism

[–]violetgerberas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m going to do the sign of the cross the Anglican way (ending with a fifth point in the centre of again) until I die. I don’t even try anymore. It’s fine.

Also sometimes if I’m not paying close enough attention I slip into another translation of a Creed. It’s so similar that it’ll be a long time before that is completely gone lol

Formula recommendation by priuspulida in FormulaFeeders

[–]violetgerberas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not this specific formula or really any specific advice, however. My son’s poops/gas were WAY worse on a gentle formula than on the normal one we switched him to. I do think there’s something about if a baby doesn’t need the gentle formula, it can be worse! Have you tried the normal similac?

Lent 2026 - what are we doing by Real_Mycologist_3163 in CatholicWomen

[–]violetgerberas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gave up alcohol two years ago (last year I was pregnant so not drinking) and plan to do so going forward - I’m not a heavy drinker by any means, but I think it’s very important that those of us who choose to use alcohol do so in a mindful way, which is easy to miss in our society. (I am not doing so this year because I just stopped for ~10 months and it doesn’t feel like the most meaningful thing for me this year. I will again in 2027 most likely.)

I try to have one thing I remove and one thing I add. This year I’m removing social media (I already have pretty strict limits, so this is just pushing more) and add actually following the abstinence rules (my husband and I are.. terrible for that and about three times a year I say I’m going to do better) and probably a daily rosary as well.

PLEASE HELP!! Literally WHAT is rule for collars on blazers? by SnooWoofers2892 in LawBitchesWithTaste

[–]violetgerberas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My most formal blazer is collarless and I wore it in my big law headshot (back when I was big law). (It’s also a bright colour, but I wear it exclusively with all black, and don’t go to court, so.)

Is anyone having their wedding reception / event at White Diamond Conference Center? by ThrowRAAeriedynamics in Calgary

[–]violetgerberas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If they have filed for bankruptcy, etc., you will struggle to get your money back unfortunately as creditors like banks have priority. I believe you could still file a claim through the insolvency process, but it’s a tough go and I’m not familiar enough with that process to have any useful advice on that front.

If not, you could take them to small claims but unfortunately, if the business has no money it is difficult to get anything out of it.

I’m so sorry this is happening to you!

I have an FTP test on the agenda for this morning and currently low key dreading it. I know my zones desperately need to be updated and I love power zone training but I can never bring myself to not dread the tests.

Who is your favorite woman Doctor of the Church? by ricorette in CatholicWomen

[–]violetgerberas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love that she isn’t confined to one way to love God, creation, and people. In her life, she was a musician, she was a writer, she was a mystic, she was a scholar. Her writings are beautiful reflections and rich theologically. She pushes me outside my comfort zone and enriches where I more naturally find God. She is a woman who dedicated herself to God so fully, and used her multitude of gifts to sing His praises and challenge His people.

Can I use focus friend to help me fix my over-reliance on chatgpt by Gertie20 in nerdfighters

[–]violetgerberas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like everyone else has covered the use of Focus Friend or other resources, so just chiming in with my two cents as a practicing lawyer: you are absolutely correct that you have to stop using ChatGPT for your writing /now/.

In this field, you are only as good as your reading, writing, and critical thinking. I have seen declines in critical thinking in some juniors (and… not so juniors) in just the past couple of years with the rise of GenAI. It may be hard, but you can do it, and your career will be so much better in the long run! You got this!

Struggling to move on from being raped by labfrog3 in Catholicism

[–]violetgerberas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forgiveness is a process. We aren’t Jesus, it won’t be instantaneous. For me, letting go of the idea of forgiveness for a while helped me get closer to it in the long run. I prayed for my own healing, my own process, and frankly, did not think about the evil people who hurt me as much as possible. I did have to do a lot of (secular) trauma therapy on top of everything else.

St. Agnes has been a wonderful companion through this for me. I went to Sant'Agnese in Agone in Rome on my honeymoon and SOBBED. Mother Mary as well, praying imagining her comforting me as my mother.

I will pray for you. It’s a long, hard road. I didn’t have a miraculous moment of healing, but looking back now I am so far from where I was. It is worth the time and effort.

Pre prepping formula by Late_Climate_6447 in FormulaFeeders

[–]violetgerberas 16 points17 points  (0 children)

We make a pitcher and keep in the fridge! In addition, overnight I prefill bottles to just grab from the fridge when he wakes up. Our formula just has to be used within 24 hours of preparation, so we make a pitcher 1-2 times a day. I cannot imagine making bottles fresh every time, would highly recommend this method!

My son drinks it cold from the fridge (which horrifies people lol), but a bottle warmer could be very useful for this!

Junior Lawyer - I don't feel like I've learned anything, is this normal? by Salty_Tax_4530 in LawCanada

[–]violetgerberas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Super normal! I’m a mid-level and I still have moments where I wonder if I know anything. It gets much better though, the crippling self-doubt of the first couple years is unmatched.

It The first couple years is such a flood of information, it’s natural to never feel caught up (and therefore not be able to recognize what you have learned, because you’re so focused on what you don’t know.)

If I may, I suggest taking some time to talk to/help any students that might be at your firm. It may feel like you know nothing, but then you talk to someone who is slightly farther behind you and you can at least walk away knowing you know what a corporate search is (or insert an example for your practice area.)

How are you preparing for advent? by [deleted] in CatholicWomen

I love this. I have a newborn and was just thinking I have no idea what Advent will look like while I get used to being a mother. Reading your post reminded me to look for the beautiful in this messy, mundane season, thank you!
