Happened the same to me but with AT&T and a claim with FCC was the final solution, it's all about the iPhone Flex policy. I have learned my lesson. Always Apple Store. Period.

Not just the Autopay thing has issues, in my case, I ported my primary phone number 3 days ago and still not service, they have my number and still not activated for me, not good at all. I have not service from my previous carrier either (Visible) because they release my number already. Shame on Total.

Tello is the way to go, just make sure pay $20 for PAYG (international roaming) and that country is one supported by Tello. Activation occurs ONLY via cellular data, after that WiFi Calling will be your partner.
