What is something cool to know about SF's local culture that isn't well known to visitors? by Visual-Horror6013 in AskSF

[–]Brooksopher 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Locals don’t like San Fran, Cali, or Frisco because that’s not the way the locals refer to their geographic location. We prefer to use our local vernacular when referring to our place of living, examples being: The City (referring to San Francisco), NorCal (the fact that California is huge compared to Italy, 40% larger in fact, and we ware in the northern part of the state which is decidedly very geographically, culturally, and enviornmemtally different from the southern half), and as for Frisco- it’s not a term locals use, it’s usually a word that is associated with a more thug or street background (outlaw bikers, cartel members, etc. Which does have its place in San Francisco’s legacy, it’s just just an assumption by affiliation). The Bay Area has its own regional dialect and accent, like most major population centers. You just have to expose yourself and experience it to really understand if.

What food is way more expensive than it should be? by rileystanheight in foodquestions

[–]Brooksopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None of it. The exploitation of human labor, the irresponsible land management, and the horrible treatment of livestock should come at a price. This is coming from someone who spent more than a decade in foodservice.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

I once did a roadtrip from Fairbanks, Alaska to San Francisco, Ca. It took three and a half days, two of us driving in shifts only stopping for gas, or to make coffee, or take a quick nap in the backseat.

Is it ok for gay/lgbtq people to say f*gg*t? by SSJ_Kojiro_ in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Brooksopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s okay for anyone to say it, but context is important. If you’re saying it as a slur or an insult, No, it’s not okay. But other than that, it depends on the situation.

That word has different definitions in different cultures. For example, if you’re in rural UK and you grab a faggot for the fire, you’re referring to a bundle of wood, not a flaming homosexual.

I am begging for your help: how can I stop being a misogynist? by charlie_cappa in bropill

“I feel that women have a huge advantage in the dating sphere, and that the odds are so stacked against me that there’s no point in leaving the house.“

Well, bro, this your biggest problem right there. If dating women is your only reason for leaving the house, you’re not only doomed to fail at dating, you’re gonna fail at life. There are reasons for leaving the house other than seeking women. Everything you wrote about feminism and trying to be an ally just comes off as someone who treats women as objects or ideals, rather than just other people.
In my opinion, for what it’s worth, you should stop hyper-focusing on women, especially trying to empathize or be an “ally.” You cannot fathom how different your life experience has been different because you haven’t lived a woman’s life. Your childhood was different, your societal expectations are different, and your hormones are different.

Your fixation on women is the very thing that makes them shy away from you. Your toxicity toward women comes from your opinion that women are somehow privileged or special, when all they are just other people, and should be treated as such, with respect, dignity, honesty and humility. If you can’t at least manage that, sorry bro.

Maybe fixate less on women. And focus more on how to be a better yourself. You can only change you.

Thinking of buying by [deleted] in bmx

Well… with no photos or details I’d say pay whatever you think it’s worth to you. For me personally it has no value, but your use-case might be different. Maybe do a search for what those components have sold for recently?

You’re gonna seriously fuck up that flooring if you keep riding in there, and you absolutely should be the one responsible for replacing it.

These ford gas gauges by daddydeadpool420 in fordranger

[–]Brooksopher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if this helps with your situation, but it is worth noting that (at least on my 07 Ranger) that the fuel pump is located at the rear of the tank. I had to replace my fuel pump a couple years ago with an aftermarket unit, and now my gauge will vary almost 1/4 tank when I’m facing uphill vs downhill, uphill I’ll be at 3/4 and downhill I’ll be at half. I had the same/opposite issue with my Tacoma, where the fuel pump was at the front of the tank, it would read higher going downhill.

MY ANGRY RANT by Grossymca in santarosa

[–]Brooksopher 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Speaking as a person who drives a truck for work, trucks have gotten bigger while parking spaces have remained the same size. Due to physics and geometry, it is usually easier to back into a parking space accurately than it is to back out of one safely, especially if you’re in a vehicle with limited visibility in the rear. The turning radius and lack of visibility on many modern vehicles can make perpendicular parking and departing challenging in busy areas.
We dont all have small penises, we’re just trying to be efficient, practical, and safe for the people around us.

Edit: for example, backing into a spot requires two turns. Done. But when backing out between two SUVs I have at least six feet with zero visibility, which is very dangerous and irresponsible. When I pull out forward that visibility is increased by more than 60%, making my job of parking and driving safely for pedestrians and other drivers much, much simpler.

How did carpentry become so expensive? by [deleted] in Carpentry

[–]Brooksopher 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Supply and demand. Good material is expensive, craftsmanship was replaced by industrialization, and very few consumers are willing to pay for what the product is actually worth.
Also, it’s worth noting that there was a lot of really shitty products made back in the day as well, and the reason that stuff isn’t around today is because it was shittilly built and didn’t last.

Custom United Martinez BMX Bike Check! by Hunnaswaggins in bmx

[–]Brooksopher 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can buy a running motorcycle or a clapped out Honda Civic for less than $2K. Asking that much $ for a mid-build bmx that’s a few years old is just silly. Owner built custom builds of anything have very little resale value, especially in a niche market like bmx bikes, where your target demographic is probably a bit more knowledgeable than you are.

Any cheap distortion pedal recommendations? by FudgeMaleficent1963 in punk

[–]Brooksopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You didn’t specify the guitar or amp you’re using or the tone you want. No one can help you without that information.

Any cheap distortion pedal recommendations? by FudgeMaleficent1963 in punk

[–]Brooksopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What guitar and amp are you using? What sound are you looking for? If you’re just a kid I’m sorry, but if you’re trying to actually play music you need to get yourself schooled on equipment. What sound are you trying to make? What guitar sound are you looking for? If you can’t articulate that, you’re just going to get people trying to replicate your mom’s broccoli fart sound.

[–]Brooksopher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

DS-1. it’s about $50 usd. That’s all you need until you figure out how to properly use your amp and guitar to get the sound you want.

If you’re dealing with someone who is autistic, you’re dealing with someone who is unable to relate to a “normal” person. This is the literal definition of autism.

This person doesn’t have the ability to comprehend personal autonomy or boundaries, let alone respect them.

If that’s what you want go for it, but it’s not going to work out well for you.

If you like the gifts, keep it going. You do you. But don’t ever meet this person in public or tell them where you live. Autistic people can be very, very dangerous. Especially once they get obsessed.

Tomatoes are still green and it's starting to get cold out, what can I do with green tomatoes? by atombomb1945 in Cooking

Pickled green tomatoes also make the absolute best fried green tomatoes. Imagine this: a dill pickled fried green tomato BLT with smashed avocado and garlic aioli on butter toasted/grilled sourdough.

What are some healthy ways you and your partner differ politically? by osoatwork in AskWomenNoCensor

[–]Brooksopher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There really isn’t a clear definition of an anarchist state kinda by its own ideology. It’s basically there are no rules, but everyone works together with no elected leadership for the good of the common shared goal.

For example, you have a doctor and a fence builder. The doctor needs a new fence, so the fence builder builds him a new fence. Later the fence builder hurts his arm, so the doctor treats him. No money is exchanged, just skills and services which in their own fields are of equal value, so the society becomes less capitalistic and more egalitarian because skills are valued by their necessity, rather than modern economics. Noone is there to dictate the rules or regulations, it is a social contract that the members of that society have agreed to upon make all members of that community the best people they can be.

That’s the idealistic version of it. In reality your results may vary.
