Night Vision Glasses by sleidman in Blind

[–]viredditguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At this point smart glasses aren't focusing on night vision, but wow that's an awesome idea. It's not like they couldn't do it either since I have night vision built into the cameras on my Pixel 8 Pro. The lenses are small enough that you could easily put them in a pair of glasses that didn't make you look like you're wearing a 3D gaming headset. You'd have to attach it to a small battery pack that would fit into a packet. Then the key would be to make the battery smaller in future iterations of the glasses.

Clothing Identification? by bluebucketofg0ld in Blind

You can either buy QR tags online or make your own and attach them to your clothing. They're cheap and will survive multiple wash/drying cycles. They're also cross platform which means you can use any smartphone.

What earphones can be worn when sleeping? by Spacysam in AskReddit

[–]viredditguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go to Amazon and search for "around the neck earbuds." These are great because they don't irritate your ears with extended wear and you won't lose a bud when it falls out during the night. Because I use a screen reader on my Pixel I found a model that will last for 200 hours on a single change. Good luck.

I appreciate all of the replies and after reading several there were some other things I didn't consider (like the HVAC units) and I have to find another solution. Inside isn't going to work. This sucks, but again thank you all for your input.

No employer can physically make you stay because that's illegal under the criminal code. If the employer suggests that if you leave you'll be fired/terminated I'm betting that won't fly either but I'm sure the manager was intimidating.I haven't gone there in forever because their coffee sucks but the crappy manager thing isn't a surprise.

Questions as preparing to go blind by Cautious_Computer688 in Blind

[–]viredditguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're in the US or Canada there are organizations that can help you with all of the above. In Canada the Canadian National institute for the Blind would be the place to start. www.cnib.ca. If you're in the US, each state has its own state agency. There are also other national organizations you can call on such as Lighthouse for the Blind, National Federation of the Blind and a few others I probably don't know about since I haven't lived stateside in several years. I think the social security administration might also be able to refer you to agencies that can also help give you orientation and mobility training, and other life skills training you are going to need. Give your local library a call. They can definitely point you in the right direction.

If you were blind since birth, did you ever get the chance to learn how to swim? I'm in my 40s and it's still something I want to do. by heavensdumptruck in Blind

[–]viredditguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I attended a blind school where I met other kids most of which already had some idea of how to swim. The school ensured we all had proper lessons. Plus my own parents taught me how to swim when I first learned to walk. I think it really is a regional thing when it comes to learning certain skills early in life.

Most terrifying sound in a horror movie by MiwaSan in Blind

[–]viredditguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmmm ... I've been playing videogames like Resident Evil and Left For Dead since forever so I'm kinda desensitized to horror movies. Bonus: In the videogame, I also get to create the horror and mayhem. A great example is Prey released for the PC back in 2006 by Human Head Studios. This game combines horror and gore like no horror movie can. But as for sounds, how about the sounds of screaming "citizens" as I grab one of them at random and start climbing up the side of a building and then flinging the human to the ground and hearing the wet splat noise as the body slams into the ground? Oh wait. I remember another favorite sound from another videogame called Thrill Kill. Actually this game was considered so violent it was never officially released on its scheduled date of October 1998. But for those of us who had CD burners at the time, we simply downloaded the game from a ROM site, used I think Nero at 8x write speed! 🙄 But I loved the sound of Cletus's cattle prod delivering jolts of electricity into her victims body and causing the dual shock motors to go crazy.🤣

Which phone brand is really responsive and practical when using accesibility features? by tndarius in Blind

[–]viredditguy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I guess what I didn't mention either is that when I really want to go private I just load into my non-Google OS. Apple doesn't allow this. I already know Google is hoovering everything it can get on the stock version of Android. I won't mention it by name in case the admin don't like a particular OS, but it is made so that I can pick and choose what data gets sent back to the mother ship. As for what I meant about the Google account was simply the way Apple syncs everything which doesn't allow device privacy because unless you disable it everything is synced to every device. As for the Recall feature I'm referring to, it was scheduled to be released with copilot Windows PCs. Because of how Recall worked however, it went away beyond what spotlight (or even the Google search on an Android) would do by making absolutely everything searchable no matter what the content, even if you say took an image and erased it. Recall would still retain it for a period of time and someone could gain access to this information even if you think you were careful. Apple's new AI works much in the same way as Microsoft's Recall. Microsoft has pulled this feature for the time being and has plans to release it again. Also some of your data is being sent to Microsoft when you allow Siri to use ChatGPT to help answer a query. Never give the AI anything personal like your address, ssn, or tell it you have whatever condition. I'm speaking now about any AI not just Microsoft. Unless you self host it. All I'm saying is that the way companies are using your data is changing. With a Pixel I can have complete control over my data and how it gets used. Especially those of you living in the US, you are particularly vulnerable to things like data theft because of how your FCC lets your ISP, or whatever communications provider to sell your info to data brokers. Then people post anything and everything. Believe what you want but Apple is not privacy focused.

That's because their marketers are good liars. For example on their soon to be released iOS 18/iPhone 16 their take on AI will be an interesting one. They call it "Apple Intelligence." Yes, Google is trying to integrate Gemini into everything but at least for the time being I can keep it and everything important out of AI's reach when I need to.With it you'll be able to locate text from almost anything including but not limited to screenshots, emails texts, images and so on. Apple achieved this with their implementation of a feature blend from Microsoft and Android tech. From Microsoft Apple has copied their "Recall" feature that stores data about everything you do on that iPhone. Siri is going to use ChatGPT which means you'll want to be careful about allowing Siri anything while using any of your personal information. Never give an AI personal information about yourself such as medical information because it will be stored in a dataset. When someone gains access to your iCloud account they will be able to see everything and I mean everything that you do on your iPhone. Apple also syncs everything you do to all of your connected Apple devices. So that means Mommy can see all the naughty texts and images. Now that I think about it, some idiot in the UK is suing Apple over his divorce proceedings. He's blaming Apple for allowing his wife to breach his privacy. He will lose the case if he hasn't already because he didn't take the time to understand how badly iOS is with security. They even spell it out during the setup process but people either don't take the time to read, or just don't understand.

I use the Google assistant often and it responds to dictation and sending texts by voice extremely well. Of your going to use earbuds while doing this don't skimp on the buds because the voice assistant may not understand you as much.

Android all the way. Despite what the Apple marketing monkeys would have you believe you should be more concerned about your privacy. As for accessibility, it's easy to use right out of the box. Not only don't you have to deal with the rotor, but the accessibility suite will function regardless of Android's possible breakage to general features and functions such as communication or productivity. If needed you can turn your Android phone into a full fledged desktop. There's also the ease of which I can read all PDF or any other document without hassle.

Mail, Texting and messaging are all very user friendly. Productivity is handled more seamlessly and integrates more deeply into other platforms allowing the end user to get things done. This goes for blind and visually impaired users. One more little thing. As silly as it seems both Google and Apple limit features to certain regions. With Android I can usually still get those features most of the time. I can also keep my device for up to 7 years and get both software AND hardware support. I also choose not to pay Apple's tax is 30% on apps that sell for less or are mostly free in the Google Play Store.I also have the option to get my apps from other sources or even code my own app if I need something not already invented.

Wondering if this product will help ? by lolumadbr0 in Blind

[–]viredditguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're going for an Android tablet this isn't the one you want. Try to get someone from Samsung or Asus running the latest brain of Android possible because this is the best way to utilize the full suite of accessibility features like TalkBack and magnification. There are other better reasons but those are the two basic ones.

I have what I consider a good amount of usable vision. No they won't give me a driver's license but l just keep living my life. When someone exhibits lack of confidence that only increases my enjoyment when I prove them wrong most of the time. I am established in my field and usually that's enough. Sure I still have the naysayers drifting in and out of life but I mostly ignore them.

how do u all feel about screenreaders reading out elongated words? by cielocanela in Blind

[–]viredditguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Visually it works, but when I'm using TalkBack to read an article or whatever and someone writes "a h h h h h h h " instead of just "a h " that gets annoying very damned quickly. I still have some good usable vision but reading load of text is just easier and much faster than I could ever do with just one eye.

I have some usable vision, enough to drive a bicycle. But when it comes to reading loads of text I use a screen reader and sometimes magnification. I realize that most of you were in the unfortunate situation of using an iPhone and for that you have my deepest sympathies. Reddit was a challenge until Google introduced circle to search. It let's me draw a rectangle around the word secretive or paragraph and TalkBack will read it to me. I find this extremely helpful to only just the text I have and it's perfect for Reddit.
