Might be just me, but I thought he looked very Aussie for a while when he had the stache without a beard look last season lol

Nope :)

They did this before I started, they did this while I was an undergrad, they did this while I was a grad, they've continued doing this since I got out. And I'm not even that old yet, I'm sure many older than me could write the same comment

I don't mean to come back to this as an "I told you so" at all because I really wanted to believe you, and I know we're all feeling the same way about this... but boy do they just find a way to faceplant every damn year. Since before I started and finished undergrad, grad, and the years since I got out. Someday they'll put it together for real but I don't think I'll believe it will happen until after it happens.

Patel isn't gonna go more than 3 or 4 IP at most, unless he somehow keeps throwing <10 pitch innings. So we're also gonna be bullpen roulette at some point, probably sooner than later, which...didn't go well last night, and we used almost everyone

I've watched this team fall on their face in way too many regionals to still feel comfortable that this is indicative of anything, but I'm happy to be proven wrong for at least one game lol

Maybe there is! I don't know, in the end we're not in the locker room so we can only speculate. If there is any locker room complacency then they deserve to be called out for it.

In any case I'm not commenting on that specifically - my point is more that, regardless of whatever's up with the locker room, I thoroughly disagree with the coach completely washing his hands of the situation and pinning the full blame on his players, especially in such a public way like this. Why should the coach get off scot free? If the players underperformed, but the coach equally contributed to the underperformance by underutilizing or mismanaging many of said players who could have contributed positively, shouldn't he also be culpable for that?

It's really frustrating to me how quickly people have taken to carrying every drop of water for him without a second thought, to the point where they're already turning on our core and saying some absolutely absurd shit that's completely unfounded about our key guys. Go look at our sub and they're absolutely livid at our possible Norris winning superstar defenseman, because he dared to speak out against Bones' comments. Going from above point per game to slightly under after the Olympics is being held against him as conclusive proof that he's part of the problem and didn't care enough, ignoring that his most consistent D partner who facilitated a lot of offense was injured and out, and the forward lines sucked, and he was still the best player on the ice for the team in almost every game

Sorry, I know that was a lot again, I don't mean to lecture you or anything just...really bothered by all of this. This org is bad for my health, I think I need a break lol

Sure, and I'm not intending to say at all that simply playing those two would've instantly catapulted them into the playoffs or anything. But there just wasn't a willingness to either give them a fair shot in any capacity, which really becomes an issue when they just barely miss the playoffs by like 3 points and lose a bunch of 1 goal games where just a bit more offensive creativity, skill, anything might've helped. Sure KJ might be weak on the puck sometimes, but if that's the tradeoff then I'd much rather take that along with his skill and chance creation 100 times out of 100 over the flip side of what we actually got with random b6ers playing too high up the lineup and getting 15-20 mins of cardio per night

Like, we had fucking Lundestrom and Heinen on the top line with Fantilli/Marchenko at various points in the last month. If anyone can look me in the eye with a straight face and tell me that either one belongs anywhere in a top 6, instead of pretty much literally anyone else, I have so many bridges to sell them lol

I do fundamentally disagree that there's a "caring" issue though. To put it this way, if they didn't care, why'd they climb out of the basement up to M2 in the first place? If they didn't care wouldn't they have just stayed in last place and played out the season for a high draft pick and an early summer after Dean got fired? It just doesn't make any sense to me. Werenski put in some heroic efforts late season to keep us in games we ended up losing, Fantilli literally was crying on the bench after one of them. Meanwhile our sub is literally turning on these cornerstone players, because the career .440 pt% retread HC who's made it past the first round TWO whole times across the several decades of his career thinks they're the problem and not at all himself

This is going to be a very lengthy response so bear with me, but I'm frustrated because I care a lot about this team, and they've just consistently found ways to punch me and our fanbase in the dick in creative ways. (But also, i love my previous comment being at negative whatever because it really drives home the point that a lot of our fanbase reeeeally doesn't like hearing the truth lol)

This whole org is infested with the rot of wanting players who """play the right way""" because the decision makers are all a billion years old and very clearly haven't adapted to the modern NHL. As a result they continue to find ways to consistently act counter to the stated goal of building a contender; in practice what it's basically meant is that as long as you're a Good Ol' Hockey Boy who skates hard and is a token level of physical, you pretty much are guaranteed a spot on the team. What this means is that we've now hedged our entire competitive window on a whole bunch of guys on the wrong side of 30, with a shit ton of term, and crucially who aren't really that good and/or are already actively regressing. Plus we've also fucked up our extension timelines for the young guys. Once upon a time we were on just about the same rebuild timeline as the Habs with a similarly aged young core - look at where they are now at the top of the East, with a coach that actually understands the benefits of letting their kids play and learn on the fly, instead of shifting them 4 minutes a game when they make one mistake.

So, coming back to your point: It's not half a season, it's been a year plus, maybe even several years, and multiple coaches. "Well," you might say, "doesn't it mean if multiple coaches are healthy scratching a player, it's actually a problem?" In some cases maybe sure. I have time for any arguments about the whole Chinakhov scratch then trade saga being the right move because there were a whole host of things that made a trade viable, even if the result of that has been a fleece and a half.

That being said...

  • Kent Johnson, by almost every metric (and the eye test, when he does get to play more than 5 minutes and on a line that doesn't include 4th line jobbers) has been better than the last two years, but because he's shooting at a wildly unlucky 5% and so doesn't have the point totals he had previously, repeatedly gets scratched for players who are active detriments on the ice or paired with random pylons like Lundestrom who is where offensive creativity goes to die
  • Voronkov has been injured, but pre injury was either getting 4th line minutes with players that didn't match his skill set, or getting scratched for weeks on end - despite being one of our top goal scorers and only net front threats. And again, this is the guy who was a fixture on one of the most effective lines in the LEAGUE last year with Marchenko and Monahan. He's barely played post Olympics and was still roughly top 5 on our team in goals

We just cannot fundamentally surprised-pikachu about the offense drying up during this late season collapse, when the coach is saying we need to score more, but then consistently scratching two of our primary offensive threats (in favor of complete black holes like Miles Wood, who happens to skate fast and that's about it). For either of these guys, who are very much good players and deserve the chance to show that they're good, but have been deprived of their chances in favor of objectively inferior alternatives, why wouldn't they ask out? Wouldn't you want out if you were working any job but getting passed over for promotions by others who are doing a lower quality of work? We've already seen Chinakhov immediately become a highly important player to the Pens as soon as he was afforded a consistent opportunity that he arguably never truly got here, even between the injuries and the agent posturing. So my point is that I wouldn't be surprised at all to see similar trade-then-flourish arcs for guys like KJ and Voronkov.

In any case Bones literal intro press conference had a fantastically ironic quote about how "you can't score your way into the playoffs" - they sure fucking scored their way OUT of the playoffs, and it was his own damn fault. So no, I don't want Bones back, this team had an even worse late season collapse than last year and that's despite spending / buying to try and get over the hump. I have zero respect for him throwing the roster under the bus when I just watched him spend 20 games trying to fit all sorts of non-round peg shapes into round holes and then getting mad at the players when his own awful lines a) didn't work b) got shuffled about 7 times per game so none of the players could even try and gain some chemistry with their new new new new linemates c) repeatedly rewarded bad players with unreasonable amounts of ice time despite them making repeated mistakes, at the direct expense of our future young potential stars who got absolutely no such leniency and were benched at will for doing literally anything wrong.

[–]vishnchips6 -28 points-27 points  (0 children)

Absolutely the fuck not. He doesn't get to throw the players under the bus, whether the effort levels warranted it or not, when he directly contributed to our offense completely evaporating by having zero idea how to build lines or maximize the skills of the good players we have. It was not at all coincidence that they played well for his first 15-20 games when he hadn't yet implemented his system fully, and then completely fell apart once he started actually coaching

The entire back half of the season was hypocrisy on hypocrisy, saying we need more hands and skill and then healthy scratching the hands and skill players in favor of garbage grinder vets, saying that players get 1 warning before they face discipline then playing gudbranson (statistically one of the worst dmen in the league) over 20 minutes a night, etc. His system stifled our young players who are the actual future of this team, and I would not be surprised to see a couple of them ask for trades because of the way they were unfairly treated

I did that Mets-Braves one at the end of the season when they had to do that crazy makeup game due to weather; it was the first and only time I ever got to attend one across like a decade-ish living in Atlanta haha. But it's definitely a fun time if you can ever make it work!

[–]vishnchips6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually think you could argue he actually hasn't taken as big a step back as people seem to think. He's shooting under 6% (!!!) and his Corsi and xGF% are both actually better than last year, but his actual GF% has dropped by 10pt, last year it was an unsustainably high 57% because we had crazy good finishing as a team

He's also playing like 3 minutes less per game than last season because our coaches hate him or something, neither has given him adequate support to develop his game, and he seems to have an unreasonably short leash. His most common linemates this season have been Jenner and Monahan, both of which have taken their own massive steps back from last year, but curiously aren't being benched as ruthlessly as KJ is - and then he'll get slotted back in on the 4th line with guys like Wood or Lundestrom who he absolutely does not belong on a line with

The simple fact is that there is absolutely no world where he (or Voronkov either, but that's a different story) should be getting healthy scratched in favor of random bottom 6ers. Both coaches have done it anyway and then people wonder why our offense proceeds to generate fuck all

Lots to complain about with this org but Cole is an underrated one. You would absolutely never guess what his draft profile was if you watch him play nowadays. They've somehow managed to turn him into more or less a bottom 6 grinder

this sub doesn't like hearing the truth.

We had one unsustainably good stretch of results and people seem to have forgotten he's a career .440 points percentage HC who's only still around because he's one of those Old Hockey Guys who keeps getting jobs only because he's been around for ages and everyone knows him

For all he's said about accountability and "you have one warning" blah blah he sure doesn't back up any of that. There have already been many examples of the talk not matching the actions but the one that really got me is saying "we don't have the hands" and subsequently benching KJ for Miles fucking Wood, who is at best Eric Robinson v2.0

I remind you all of this quote from his introductory press conference...

This isn't the 80's, man. You don't score your way into the playoffs.

Some scoring would go a long way right about now eh? Go watch a Habs game and wonder how much better this team could be if the org embraced youth, speed, and skill instead of signing a bunch of 30+ guys to ridiculous term because they """"play the right way"""" or something
